  • A look at the arcade games that were released in 1981.
More clones of well known games from some less-known manufacturers; Space-Invader style shooters were still in vogue - but there were also a few Centipede and Asteroid clones.
In terms of the big players, Konami was strong this year, giving us Frogger and Scramble; Namco gave us Galaga; Sega upped the driving game stakes with the legendary Turbo - and Nintendo gave us a game starring a certain jumping man facing off a certain stubborn gorilla...

    14:15 - LOL - Space Bugger.
The weird thing is that the word 'bugger' was much more common as a swear-word back in the 80's compared to now, and yet this game was made in 1981. I assume it's a translation thing.

I've just gone and created one. Bear in mind that the 80s list is not done - we've only done 1980/1982 and 1985/1986. We're working on completing the rest.

Done! I didn't realize it wasn't sorted. Thanks for pointing it out!

In 1981 I was a freshman in high school and I spent most of my time at the arcade, to this day I still only play mostly video games from the 70s and early 80s but I’m shocked at how many of these games I’m unfamiliar with so thanks for showing at least to me these unfamiliar gems
