  • I absolutely love making from 'scrap' wood. This piece was from a large mahogany external door, that had been covered in thick varnish for over 40 years.
The result is a beautiful 6 inch (152mm) Mahogany bowl.
    Thank you for watching.

What a stunning piece of wood. Amazing that you were able to rescue it from an old door. Nice job!

Thank you. I’m really enjoying making bowls from materials that people discard and overlook.

How did you chuck-in the obverse side of the bowl when turning and digging out the top? Some kind of expanding collet fitting that gripped into the ~1/8th inch deep indentation cut out of the bottom? Edit: Aha! I see from a different video how the expanding 4-lobed chuck works - well, expanding and contracting. Looks like it can fit into a minimum diameter of about 2 inches and expand out about a half inch?

Yes the chuck is really versatile and allows for a neat finish. Some people prefer a tenon on the base of the bowl, then trim it off later. I prefer a mortise indentation, which allows me to neatly fit my name disc for a finishing touch. Thanks for watching 👍

Mahogany is not one of my favorites. That bowl is absolutely beautiful. Wow, you made my least favorite hardwood look great, thanks for the videos. 😎

1:59 Awesome woodworking and crafting. Did you say "flick it over" instead of "flip"? (Like how one might flick crumbs off of clothing or a surface like a table or countertop, a swift blow or strike from (usually) the index finger.)

I think I did. That’s probably why I don’t talk too much on the videos 🤣 . Thank you for watching 😎

Where do you get a 3" thick mahogany door? That was stunning.

    • @RDMWoodturning

It was a fraction over 2” thick. The door was at a refuse tip in a village about 10 miles away. It’s ridiculous the things that people throw away.

    No more wood sealer ??

I felt sorry for the wood, as it was covered in thick varnish on one side and very dry inside. So I went for an oil to feed the wood. Thanks for watching
