Otto is hated because he's trying to steal the throne for his family with schemes and dirty tricks, from the moment on when he pimped out his own daughter to Visaerys. He gave advice to marry Rhaenyra to Aegon because Rhaenyra was the heiress and it would have secured a Hightower on the throne. But he did NOT give the sage advice to Visaerys to marry Leana Velaryon (Lyonel Strong, who *actually* had the best interest of the 7 kingdoms in mind, did that!) Instead he sent his daughter to the king to "console" him. But yes, he's a brilliant master manipulator and plays the long game. 😀

A lot of the lords were already against Rhaenyra and were most likely planning to rebel because she was a woman. Otto knew this and assumed Viserys would name his son heir once he was born but Viserys fumbled and it led to the civil war the Jaeharys (an actual good king) avoided by naming Viserys heir over Rhaenys despite Rhaenys being the better choice. Rhaenyra was only able to be named heir because of the fact that Rhaenys wasn't able to be named heir which is a hypocritical paradox.

Rhaenyra isn’t sending Baela out instead of Jace because she sees her as disposable, but because she knows Jace isn’t in the right mindset. Not that there isn’t more to it- obviously she’s hesitant to send him, he’s HER HEIR, but cmon now, Rhaenyra isn’t that type of person. The scene DIRECTLY before that one is Daemon and Rhaenyra fighting over the harm of an innocent child. Jace is on a warpath; he seeks vengeance. If the leaks are to be believed, he will definitely leap at the chance to engage with the greens. So she is sending Baela because she won’t be irrational and emotional. I mean, Rhaenyra literally told her to keep her distance, (so she wouldn’t be at risk for being shot out of the sky).
yeah i fully think Baela is her child anyway. And that "I depend on you, Baela" was 100% a trust thing, not a "I'm sending you to die because I don't want my son dying" thing.
This episode is probably my favourite of the whole series so far. Acting and writing is amazing. The Otto, Aegon and Criston scene my personal favourite, Rhys Ifans absolutely killed that scene. The twins scene was amazing as well.
Rhys Ifans is IMHO the MVP of an episode with many great acting performances! He really made me feel for Ott in his scene with Aegon and Cole - and I usually hate Otto! 🙂

You could see the realization dawn on him in real time just what his machinations has gotten him - headaches and treachery, having backed a bad horse and losing who was actually a good man and once his good friend. A better king than even Otto realized, beyond "pliability" because of all the things Aegon lacks as a ruler.
The best part of this episode for me was Otto calling Cole's plan "a prank".. The worst part was Alicent ignoring her grieving son crying in front of her..
Otto was wrong to yell at his grieving grandson who look for revenge and Criston plan was actually good people will not admit because they hate Cole but Rhanyra only survived because Mysaria recognised Arryk it was luck

Aegon could have brought the ratcatchers in front of Blood and ordered him to identify which one of them helped him, but he was blinded by rage and just killed all of them.

That's false. We've seen Alicent being with Helaena time and again even though she doesn't really understand Helaena since she's on the spectrum. On episode 9 of season 1, Alicent also put herself in between Aegon and Rhaenys' dragon. She's literally willing to die first for her son.
rhaenyra had loving parents, alicent didnt. rhaenyra had a say in her marriage and became a mother willingly, alicent didnt. rhaenyra’s first born is an honorable dude, alicent disowned aegon for r*ping the servant. now piece that all together and figure out why alicent was incapable of comforting aegon

In that moment before surrendering his Hand status, you could see it on his face this perfect "Gods...this is what all this game-playing has gotten me." And seeing him genuinely feel for what he lost with Viserys, beyond him being "pliable" like Larys said - even when Viserys went against him, he was at minimum a man of good and balanced intentions. It took all of this for Otto to realize that Viserys was a better man and king than even he realized, but only after he died and purposefully went against his once good friend's will.
I have to disagree about Alicent doing everything the right way in season one. She was a hypocrite from day one. She knew her father sent her to the King to manipulate him and her supposed honor didnt compel her to report it to the king. She went along with the scheme, and visited the king at the request of Otto. "wear one of your mothers dresses". She knew Larys killed the hand of the king the second most powerful person in the realm and his son. She didnt report it to the king, instead she used it to put her father back in power. She was letting Larys masturbate to her feet, while the king laid sick in bed. She attacked Rhanera in front of everyone and cut her. She disobeyed the king countless times. She attempted to steal driftmark from Luke while the king laid sick in bed. The list goes on and on. I understand people are team green, but I think to say you are team green because of team green doing things the right way is incorrect. Otto was plotting since day one as the hand of the king lets not forget.
This is very true. I enjoy her complexity, but that's what she was in season 1. She didn't do everything right, but also she is a continued victim of the system. Rhaenyra said Alicent was "hiding beneath the cloak of your own righteousness" for a reason - they were both kind of right and kind of wrong in that confrontation.
I mean Alicent realising it's wrong but still doing it regardless is exactly what makes her a hypocrite. Double down with the fact she preaches someone else to do what's right, while she herself can't practice it. Whereas Rhaenyra, she lives with her own rule, she just doesn't care. Notice how Daemong says “my brothers crown”. Daemon wants war, he wants to go and set the entire green bloodline into flames for what he believes was the murder of his brother. He has no interest in the crown or ruling it, Rhanyra having him do nothing is what pisses him off

Otto caused a majority of this mess. If he never manipulated Alicent to seduce Viserys and never manipulated her against Rhaenyra and tried less to do the same with Viserys none of this would have happened.
Not really what happened. Having his daughter console the grieving king can be framed as "manipulation" or simply doing the job of Hand well. Then he correctly predicted there would be a conflict over Rhaenyra's succession and warned his own daughter who would be in danger. It's not his fault that this conflict between Alicent and Rhaenyra had to emerge.

The only light in which you can believe Otto to be less than scum is if you believe he really did believed that Aegon's claim was so strong that someone would inevitably use it against Rhaenyra or that Rhaenyra herself would slaughter her half brothers. If you take that for a truth, then Otto has only ever been preparing for an inevitable succession that Viserys refused to foresaw and protecting his family in the process. But no, I don't see it that way.
otto would never support rhaenyra or give any reason to the blacks he simply wanted to lower aegon's morale so he could continue manipulating but it backfired. aegon never wanted to be king now he lost his son partly because of his family's ambition. on the other hand alicent criston and daemon stress me out this season, when rhaenyra called daemon pathetic i felt happy he deserved it. daemon this season is stressful i really dislike him even if criston cole beats him it's more stressful.
At the very least for the Cargyll Twins, in the present timeline their story has become legend. No one cares about the politics of the Dance of Dragons when it comes to them: every man, woman, and child in the Seven Kingdoms knows them as paragons of fraternal love and knightly duty. It's kind of beautiful.
I cant redeem Otto since he "gave" her daughter to Viserys when he lost her wife and son. But Cole is giving his all to be next to Otto on my "most hated HOTD characters" list x)
The fight between the twins was actually as tragic as written as in the book, the sorrows after each slash to eachother was incredible. If a nitpick could be made for that scene it would probably be that writers should have added the factor of the twins trying to convince eachother to stop and join their own side as their blades connected. If you ever get a chance, you should check out a song that was made for this battle called farewell my brother. I haven't check yet but I believed it is still on TH-cam.
Rhaenyra isn't the most "virtuous" of women ( she acted out a lot in the first season lol put a lot in jeopardy ) and yet she's a far better mother than Alicent. Alicent always kept "composure" and all, but no real connexion to those that surround her, even her children, and it will bite her in the end..
Fabien Frankel, the actor for Ser Crispy, had to recently turn off and limit his comments on social media because of the vitriol he was receiving. It's really sad that some of the general population can't split the actor from the character. The sad part of playing a truly vile character really well.

Otto wants Aegon on throne because he is his own blood and he knows there would be many lords who would not accept Rhenayra as queen and would forcefully try to get Aegon as king, which would lead to Rhenayra to have competion killed, eventually leading to some kinda war. He thinks a lot ahead and tries hard to keep peace. I think that was one of the reasons why he suggested her marriage to Aegon in season 1.
That’s the problem though he thinks to far ahead not knowing the choices or the outcomes they don’t know that rhaenyera would be accepted or not and she could easily stopped anything progressing had she been given the chance but that chance was stolen from her before she was ever told about her fathers death. Now Otto’s choices and consequences are coming to bite him in the ass.

Rhaenyra legit let people die and tried to get her own brother punished for calling out her children as obvious bastards. Punishing people for calling your illegitimate kids illegitimate is worse than Cole being a hypocrite and calling out Arryk for not protecting the kids.
These two are so good at their reactions. Ange always coming through with the funny one liners. Also they are so spot on with saying that Otto gets unfair criticism. He's a complex man but he does know what is right and wrong and isn't just some evil guy who does evil things like say Daemon does. Proof of that is when he confronted Aegon and said they were poorer for it, now that Viserys was dead.

And that maybe Maelor hasn't been born yet.

otto is in my top 3 characters! he reminds me so much of tywin, who was also in my top characters in GOT. they're both intelligent, commanding, and realistic/logical... which can be refreshing when other characters are making so many poor decisions based solely on emotions and revenge. i usually prefer characters who are more empathetic, but otto is so unique in this story because he's one of the only ones who will reign in the impulsive and destructive acts of others

To be fair, we have seen Alicent being a bad mother as early as ep 4 s1, which is as soon as we saw baby Aegon. It became even more evident when we had scenes with Rhaenyra as a mother to compare with. Alicent’s children always cried around her and she was quick to give them away to her maids. We even had that scene in ep 9 when Aegon openly asks if she even loves him. And yes, it makes sense that since she had no love or affection from Otto, she will have none for her own children, but 20 years later we see the results of this cycle. They are more like pawns in their game, rather than her children, just like she was in Otto’s game.

@@DavidCarradinesBelt Yes, but it is not only because he wants the power, he has a lot of power already, his focus from the beginning of the series were more to prevent Daemon to get to throne and a lot of the thing that he did was to accomplish that goal.
I'm really worried about where the writing is headed in this show. Having no guards anywhere nearby the Queen and heirs chambers was kind of unbelievable. But the idea that Aegon would give Criston Cole (Commander of the KG) a promotion after one of the biggest royal family protection fails ever, is such a glaring plot hole. And then sticking Daeron into the story so awkwardly. I know some people don't care because it is fantasy. But what makes these shows/books work at their best is when there is a believable internal logic to the politics and the characters actions. I really liked season 1, even with some plot holes/weird decisions most of it was so good I didn't care much. Now I'm worried HOTD is going the way of later GOT in terms of quality of writing. Fingers crossed I'm wrong.
I actually do now think Otto really just wants the job of being a hand. I think the only reason he wants one of his family on the throne is so it'll make his job better cause he thinks with his family in there he could control them better. Like he doesn't want Daemon to be the king cause he knows Daemon hates him and he is chaotic. He also doesn't think a woman should be the ruler cause he is also a conservative man. But at the end of the day he does want what is better for the realm. He has been the hand for three generations and all of those have been peaceful. Now I think he really regrets making Aegon king.

I dont think there's one word that perfectly sums up Daemon, but he is definitely narcissistic to a certain degree. He has a very set image of what a Targaryen/Valyrian should be and considers himself the only one who truly fulfills that. He liked Rhaenyra when she was young and impulsive, but now that she's more mature and temperate he dislikes her for being similar to Viserys. He definitely loved Viserys very deeply, but he still only seems to truly _value_ people based on how closely they act like him

That's false. We've seen Alicent being with Helaena time and again even though she doesn't really understand Helaena since she's on the spectrum. On episode 9 of season 1, Alicent also put herself in between Aegon and Rhaenys' dragon. She's literally willing to die first for her son.

In that moment before surrendering his Hand status, you could see it on his face this perfect "Gods...this is what all this game-playing has gotten me." And seeing him genuinely feel for what he lost with Viserys, beyond him being "pliable" like Larys said - even when Viserys went against him, he was at minimum a man of good and balanced intentions.
It took all of this for Otto to realize that Viserys was a better man and king than even he realized, but only after he died and purposefully went against his once good friend's will.
Alicent in this episode was wild. Imagine having sex with the man that took your fathers place right after watching your son breaking down in grief. 💀

I have to disagree about Alicent doing everything the right way in season one. She was a hypocrite from day one. She knew her father sent her to the King to manipulate him and her supposed honor didnt compel her to report it to the king. She went along with the scheme, and visited the king at the request of Otto. "wear one of your mothers dresses". She knew Larys killed the hand of the king the second most powerful person in the realm and his son. She didnt report it to the king, instead she used it to put her father back in power. She was letting Larys masturbate to her feet, while the king laid sick in bed. She attacked Rhanera in front of everyone and cut her. She disobeyed the king countless times. She attempted to steal driftmark from Luke while the king laid sick in bed. The list goes on and on. I understand people are team green, but I think to say you are team green because of team green doing things the right way is incorrect. Otto was plotting since day one as the hand of the king lets not forget.
This is very true. I enjoy her complexity, but that's what she was in season 1. She didn't do everything right, but also she is a continued victim of the system. Rhaenyra said Alicent was "hiding beneath the cloak of your own righteousness" for a reason - they were both kind of right and kind of wrong in that confrontation.
I mean Alicent realising it's wrong but still doing it regardless is exactly what makes her a hypocrite. Double down with the fact she preaches someone else to do what's right, while she herself can't practice it.

Otto caused a majority of this mess. If he never manipulated Alicent to seduce Viserys and never manipulated her against Rhaenyra and tried less to do the same with Viserys none of this would have happened.
Not really what happened. Having his daughter console the grieving king can be framed as "manipulation" or simply doing the job of Hand well. Then he correctly predicted there would be a conflict over Rhaenyra's succession and warned his own daughter who would be in danger. It's not his fault that this conflict between Alicent and Rhaenyra had to emerge.

The only light in which you can believe Otto to be less than scum is if you believe he really did believed that Aegon's claim was so strong that someone would inevitably use it against Rhaenyra or that Rhaenyra herself would slaughter her half brothers.
If you take that for a truth, then Otto has only ever been preparing for an inevitable succession that Viserys refused to foresaw and protecting his family in the process.

At the very least for the Cargyll Twins, in the present timeline their story has become legend. The fight between the twins was actually as tragic as written as in the book, the sorrows after each slash to eachother was incredible. If a nitpick could be made for that scene it would probably be that writers should have added the factor of the twins trying to convince eachother to stop and join their own side as their blades connected. If you ever get a chance, you should check out a song that was made for this battle called farewell my brother. I haven't check yet but I believed it is still on TH-cam.
Rhaenyra isn't the most "virtuous" of women ( she acted out a lot in the first season lol put a lot in jeopardy ) and yet she's a far better mother than Alicent.
Alicent always kept "composure" and all, but no real connexion to those that surround her, even her children, and it will bite her in the end..

Otto wants Aegon on throne because he is his own blood and he knows there would be many lords who would not accept Rhenayra as queen and would forcefully try to get Aegon as king, which would lead to Rhenayra to have competion killed, eventually leading to some kinda war.
He thinks a lot ahead and tries hard to keep peace. I think that was one of the reasons why he suggested her marriage to Aegon in season 1.
That’s the problem though he thinks to far ahead not knowing the choices or the outcomes they don’t know that rhaenyera would be accepted or not and she could easily stopped anything progressing had she been given the chance but that chance was stolen from her before she was ever told about her fathers death. Now Otto’s choices and consequences are coming to bite him in the ass.

These two are so good at their reactions. Ange always coming through with the funny one liners. Also they are so spot on with saying that Otto gets unfair criticism. He's a complex man but he does know what is right and wrong and isn't just some evil guy who does evil things like say Daemon does. Proof of that is when he confronted Aegon and said they were poorer for it, now that Viserys was dead.

Aemond (if he has any ambition) would certainly be put in odds with his own brother. But I got spoiled and I know there's another sibling to Aegon called Daeron Targaryen that could come out in s3. And that maybe Maelor hasn't been born yet.

otto is in my top 3 characters! he reminds me so much of tywin, who was also in my top characters in GOT. they're both intelligent, commanding, and realistic/logical... which can be refreshing when other characters are making so many poor decisions based solely on emotions and revenge. i usually prefer characters who are more empathetic, but otto is so unique in this story because he's one of the only ones who will reign in the impulsive and destructive acts of others

To be fair, we have seen Alicent being a bad mother as early as ep 4 s1, which is as soon as we saw baby Aegon. It became even more evident when we had scenes with Rhaenyra as a mother to compare with. Alicent’s children always cried around her and she was quick to give them away to her maids. We even had that scene in ep 9 when Aegon openly asks if she even loves him. And yes, it makes sense that since she had no love or affection from Otto, she will have none for her own children, but 20 years later we see the results of this cycle. They are more like pawns in their game, rather than her children, just like she was in Otto’s game.

I used to be a fan of the green only because of season 1 episode 7. I really felt for Alicent, but now Long Live The Queen
I'm really worried about where the writing is headed in this show. Having no guards anywhere nearby the Queen and heirs chambers was kind of unbelievable. But the idea that Aegon would give Criston Cole (Commander of the KG) a promotion after one of the biggest royal family protection fails ever, is such a glaring plot hole. And then sticking Daeron into the story so awkwardly.
I know some people don't care because it is fantasy. But what makes these shows/books work at their best is when there is a believable internal logic to the politics and the characters actions. I really liked season 1, even with some plot holes/weird decisions most of it was so good I didn't care much. Now I'm worried HOTD is going the way of later GOT in terms of quality of writing. Fingers crossed I'm wrong.

I actually do now think Otto really just wants the job of being a hand. I think the only reason he wants one of his family on the throne is so it'll make his job better cause he thinks with his family in there he could control them better. Like he doesn't want Daemon to be the king cause he knows Daemon hates him and he is chaotic. He also doesn't think a woman should be the ruler cause he is also a conservative man. But at the end of the day he does want what is better for the realm. He has been the hand for three generations and all of those have been peaceful. Now I think he really regrets making Aegon king.

I dont think there's one word that perfectly sums up Daemon, but he is definitely narcissistic to a certain degree. He has a very set image of what a Targaryen/Valyrian should be and considers himself the only one who truly fulfills that. He liked Rhaenyra when she was young and impulsive, but now that she's more mature and temperate he dislikes her for being similar to Viserys. He definitely loved Viserys very deeply, but he still only seems to truly _value_ people based on how closely they act like him
