In this video guitar lesson, I will show you note-for-note how to play Radiohead's breakthrough hit "Creep".
In this Creep guitar lesson, I will not only show you all the chords, but in addition, I will break down guitarist Jonny Greenwood's tremolo picked octaves played during all the chorus' including the extended ending chorus.
The entire song is based around a simple four chord progression using bar chords. When playing these chords you will need to use an arpeggio picking style throughout all the verse sections. There is no definitive picking pattern because it changes gradually throughout the song. The main thing you will need to focus on during the picking pattern is to slowly make your way to the higher pitched strings every time you play through the verse chords. This will all make a lot more sense after watching the video lesson.
The real guitar fireworks happen during the chorus when the distortion is kicked in and we have a couple of separate guitar parts being played simultaneously. During the first chorus you will begin the octave melody when the C major chord arrives. The first chorus cuts the octave melody short, but the extended chorus and the end of the song let's the entire octave melody be heard.
When learning this extended octave part, you may need to watch that section of the lesson multiple times and memorize the numbers of the frets to play the octaves on a section at a time. The chord form never changes and it always remains on the same strings so you can just focus on the fret numbers and the rapid tremolo picking.
Speaking of that tremolo picking, just as I suggest it the video lesson, rapid strumming is easier on the picking hand if you temporarily raise your wrist. It gives you a better angle to strike the strings and helps you keep your wrist and forearm relaxed, which is essential when attempting something that is this fast for this long amount of time.
So enjoy learning this incredible Radiohead classic, it is definitely one of my favorites from the 90's. :)
    Carl...

Surprising note: Radiohead refused to play this tune for 7 years. Whenever people requests the song, Thom Yorke, would cuss and leave the stage b/c it was so popular.

Peter Megyeri which would essentially lead to you hating the song for it attracting new audiences and for people to recognise them just with that one song. Yes he probably didnt hate the song when he wrote it, but progressively started to dislike it as people would take the piss and recognise Nirvana for that one song, when they have so many more cool songs...

It is excellent. People want quick solutions, don't want to put the work in, get frustrated and give up too soon. The common complaint in the comments sections seems to be "I can't play barre chords!!" I can understand that somewhat, but guitar is an instrument you need to spend hours per day, months of practice on, so other than the highly naturally talented, it doesn't come overnight. In this case the high e, b strings don't necessarily have to come in to play, one can get by in this song without them if they are muffled/buzz when you hold the barre. If you are so poor at bar chords that you can't get a clean tone out of the g string that is a problem, but work on developing your hand/finger strength and proper positioning of your thumb behind the neck (that seems to be the problem for most).
There are ways to play this in open form chords too, but these players probably also lack the knowledge of theory to transpose. So learn what makes a chord happen from its root, why is it minor? 7th? Suspended/diminished? One guy was saying he couldn't get notes out of the C minor on the 8th fret...so play it on the 3rd fret with the Am open chord shape if that is easier (it seems for a lot of people it is easier to play a barre on the higher frets sometimes and it should be on an electric with nice action, lighter gauge strings)...or put a capo on the 3rd fret for the first G phrase and that Cm (play the Emajor/A minor open shapes) and bar only the 7th and 8th (have to change very last chord position though). There is a way around everything. If you cannot master the two string (with D string muted) octave climbs and descents, well you are lost and have no business attempting this or most any other song yet really. This guy Carl is terrific, what a service he provides for beginner/intermediate players!! Few people are going to pick up a guitar and only practice a couple hour a week hoping that, one morning a year from now, they will wake up a guitar God.

As 'simple' a song this is, I've been trying to play this song all the way through on acoustic for years and years, and I just cannot muster the endurance to keep up with those barre chords all the way through the song, my hand cramps like mad. Any suggestions on how to build that strength? Some have told me "keep playing it over and over" and I have, for years, and nothing seems to change much.

shakedaddy1 Try to use your thumb less and hour whole arm more, right arm to be exact ;) Try tu pull the guitar body to you with your right hand andthe guitar neck to you with your left hand (jut do it carefully, as you don't want to break the guitar's neck). You won't have to use so much strenght from your thumb to hold the barre chord. Anyway, you can always train your hand muscles (squeezing some kind of little ball in your palm for example).

I used to play an Ovation because a lot of people love Ovations...but I found the neck was terribly uncomfortable for my hand and I got rid of it - and my hand cramps went with the damn thing. I basically gave it to a hobo. Best thing I ever did. Actually he's probably all crippled up in the hands now....jesus. I'm a monster!

This might be bad advice but you know what helped me improve (especially with barre chords) when I felt stuck? Just leaving it. Stop fixating on it. I played other songs. I practiced other things. I took a few days off playing guitar. I stopped trying so hard and somehow it naturally came to me. I think it’s also about courage and attitude, if that makes sense. Instead of panicking about getting it right just do it, even if it sounds terrible at first. To quote my favourite green little man: “Do or do not - there is no try.”

It almost ruined them because everyone thought they would just be one hit wonders. People would go to their concerts and leave once they played creep, it was the only song people wanted to play. Not to mention they didn't expect the sudden jolt to fame it brought them.

Woodsy Owl yeah thats true, and i think that the "british nirvana" tag that they were getting from music critics also is what they are referring to. i like radioheads first few albums best, when they still had loud guitars and a more prominent element of aggression.

@@valsofh8982 hmmmn, i never knew that, maybe that is true....i know the guitar player hated it he said, so that's why he did those loud, ugly dead note strums before the chorus, which ironically is the greatest part of the song almost, lol....

Yes, some ideas is to pick on the high bit of the fretboard and also tilt your pick a bit so it glides of the string and doesn't get caught if yk what I mean, good luck!
