I just picked up the old HF polisher with a 5” and 3” backing plates and the Chemical Guys Hexlogic pads. I’m new to paint correction and just did 2 of our cars with Maguire’s ultimate polish and the orange hexlogic pad. Actually got a ton of light scratches/swirls and 95% of the water spots on my wife’s car.

I used UC by hand to prepare my new car for cquartz. I could erase some scratches with just a wax pad and my arm. I was amazed by the product and recommended it to all my friends.

  • @snail415
    @snail415 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

I use both. I’d say that if you get familiar with both, you really want to always have both available at your disposal.
3D to me is a better polish, and UC is a better compound IF you time the working time properly. If you get that right with a green pad, it works wonders.
That said, if there’s one to take to the grave, it’s 3D. So flexible, lasts forever, no dust, and beyond consistent. If you team 3D with a wool or microfiber pad, you’ll be amazed at what it can tackle.
Another product I really like for super-tough jobs is Xtreme Solutions LVR 321 Knockout. Yes, it will dust some, but it goes after 1,000-grit problems without hesitation. Great to have handy when you need to cut fast.

Some folks have no respect or faith at all on some products unless they are high end or really overpriced because of a fancy name, but some of these retail products not only hold their own to some of these fancy name ones but have been long main stays in the market which kind of tells us that they do their intended purpose.

MUC is really a great product. I just had an aluminum car carrier with 188 feet of tree branch scratches. Client loves Meguiar's products and always wants me to use them. MUC teamed with the Rupes Wool Polishing pads took out the scratches efficiently while not being too aggressive on the thin enamel paint.

I haven't tried the porter cable. But I do have a harbor freight and after I changed the grease it runs great. I have nicer models but nothing wrong with the "cheaper" models.
Porter Cable is tried and true. Been around for years and before the explosion of polishers it was the one to have. Technique trumps machine most times. Sure long throws may work faster sometimes, but you can get great work done with the "cheaper" machines too.

I love these cheap vs expensive shootouts! Ultimate Compound is very easy and very effective compound to use. I have seen it do amazing stuff as well, when you throw it at certain applications . If you told me that all I could do is 1-step on a certain car, it would most likely be 1 of 5 compounds I choose. I know this compound probably better than I know any other. Very easy and forgiving, designed to just work for beginners. Great shootout! You picked two of my favorites!

I'm from the UK and been doing this for 20 odd yrs and we sometimes use 3M compound depending how tight our employers are lol I got my own buffer it's like 15 yrs old.the make is called SILVERLINE about £45 and it's a bog standard machine, big, heavy and awkward plus never had any of those velcro pads just the complete head that screws on.I got used to it and it did it's job and made great results. Depending on peoples experience and good quality compound plus if you want it 10/10 my SILVERLINE was ok.I had to buff and clean vehicles as quick as possible and chuck 'em out on the sales forecourt as that's what my boss wants...he got it....didn't do a 9/10 job only a 8/10 as to companies they want to "Shift metal" was their moto so i did what they asked lol I'd love to use those new machines!

Awesome video Jimbo. Being new to detailing I have had great results from the ultimate compound. After making a pass with my DA, I like being able to reference the pass markings from the compound and pad. I noticed that the 3D one creates less of a visual as the product is worked in. For me this visual reference helps me ensure I have good coverage and overlap. I am sure as I process with this passion, my opinions of products and how they apply may change. But for now…I have been satisfied with the results carried out from my basic 6” DA. Thanks for putting together this video that relates to the diy weekend warrior enthusiasts 🤙

I've used the meguiares ultimate compound many times and it does a fantastic job and polishes out nice. I don't like that it breaks down quick, it dusts and has a tendency to cake up on the pad. Would you bother with one more step and use 5000 grit after 3000 grit (before the Meguiars Ultimate compound), or do you feel 3000 is sufficient as your last sandpaper grit? From the youtube vid, it looks like 3000 is sufficient, but without being there its a bit hard to tell. Thanks!!!

I use Meguiars m105 most of the time for toughjobs but I still reach for Ultimate Compound for those that's not too bad but where a polish doesnt give me what I'm after.
    Little dusting
    Easy wipe off
    Easy to find. OTC

For me there is a BIG difference. The 3D one cost more than 4 times the price of a Meguiars bottle.
So for comparable results, I'll go with the Meguiar's.

I believe 3D one is better for mobile detailers as you CAN use this product in direct sunlight, ultimate compound you have to do it in the shade and a on a cool panel, so I believe 3D one is marketed more for the mobile detailers working outside

    Hey Jimbo!!!
    Hope you are keeping well.
Whats the deal with forced rotation Flex machine 8 mm through, or 5.5 mm Makita ?
Will it finnish perfectly fine with one step compound and no holograms every time / black / dark colours paintwork / both german and japanese paints or at least germans ? In hands of intermediate to advanced skilled da polisher person ?
How much slower if at all forced rotation than 15 mm through da please ?
Will forced rotation be safe working under sun paired up with scholl s 20 one step ?

3d one is also the polish in one though. So you could leave to product on and chase it with the polishing pad.

Jimbo, nice test. To be more fair to the Ultimate compound, you said it gave just as good of results as the 3D one but since 3D one is a Hybrid Cutting Compound & Finishing Polish, and Ultimate is just a compound, wouldn't you need to finish off the Ultimate side with their Ultimate polish too for more apples to apples comparison? I bet with the Ultimate Polish added, it probably looks better than the 3D one!

I don't own 3D one, but my understanding about the product is that it is an all in one. What this means is that, if you want to do a 2 step, first you team 3D one with a cutting pad and cut. Then, you change pads to a finishing pad, and do another pass with 3D one and finish. Never done it, but it is my understanding that this is the big deal with this product.
Also, it is supposed to be a great One Step. Just combine it with a medium pad and go at it.
Anyway, my 2 cents based on what I have heard of the product.
I personally use D300 and D302, with Meguiar's microfiber pads. They work well. May get 3D one for a One step at some point.
Finally, if you want something that can really cut, you need 3D ACA500... also known as the ultimate cutter.

Seemed like there was a lot more product on the side of the meguiars when you worked it in but I presume that’s not the case , but it just spreads and breaks down different compared to 3D one but according to other reviews , the 3D one can finish down a lot better as the 3D one is a one step compound and polish but the meguiars is just a compound for the first step of 2-3 step process so comparing these two is not fair as they are both different products

You can see in the reflection of the bigger scan grip light that there was a huge difference when you moved it from the meguires side to the 3D. Meguires had a nice finish but a bit hazy. The reflection of the scan grip on the 3D side was very clear and had a lot of depth, no haze.

Do you prime your pads? I don't know wtf I am doing wrong but I have tried some Chemical guys v32/v34 with a hexo yellow pad which is supposed to be for deeeeeeep defects and oxidation. I washed it with dish soap to remove all the wax clayed it and then started and all I can do is get the paint shiny but the scratches are still there and that v32 is gritty like whoa.I tried v34/v36 with a hexo orange pad same results. Tried foam pads they don't seem to do crap I mean literally nothing. Tried VSS from Chemical guys same results nada. I tried turtle wax heavy duty compound doesn't do a thing but leave my pad brown. I tried polish scratch remover and nothing. I tried spraying the pad with detail spray and that just seems to fling compound everywhere and I'm literally barely putting any spray on. When I do a new pad it just seems to dry so I add more compound but then it starts to fling and I look at the pad and it's still not all covered in compound. Im doing the correct pass technique but my compound never seems so smooth and white like what you are showing. I am using a harbor freight DA could that be it? I'm using 6" pads. I did my black caddy last week and I spent hours for it to just look shiny with all the scratches still on it. It's like I did all that work for nothing. I'm doing small areas. I am running out of patience and not to mention a lot of compound. I seem to be doing everything correctly but something is off. I also seem to have residue I can't wipe off after. I mean it comes off but the residue just moves from one area to another. If I put to little it doesn't but then the paint seems the same so I put more and it just gets shiny but residue and scratches everywhere still. I have tried it on 3 of my cars 07 DTS, 04 Jeep wrangler and 2001 Corvette. I was able to get the swirls out of the corvette but spent literally 1 hour on a door. 1 hr!!!!! And still had some slight scratches. None are really that deep in the clear coat. I could go on but you get the point. Sorry for the book. I'm just frustrated. I knew something was wrong when I was using a V32 that feels like sand and a pretty firm hexo yellow pad meant for oxidation and deep cuts and all I get is shiny paint still with scratches in it.

I have a new car i just got. I dont have a da nor do i know how to use one yet. Is their a polish you can recomend to remove wax the dealer may have put on ?
I plan to thoroughly wash. Decontaminate, then polish by hand to remove any wax, and swirls i may have added in the wash process. Then polish by habd to remove , and i have a bottle of prep to remove oils and residue from the polish, then after apply the Neguieres past wax graphene / ceramic coat.
Any oroduct you can recomend. I guess i dont needvto compound, and since the car us bew dont want to remove ckear ciat. Just clean and enhance shin. Leave paint vurgin to accept my wax.
