  • Henlo! I am The President of Chickenlandia and I want to welcome you to Chickenlandia, a magical place where my pet chickens (and a few ducks) live an awesome life. Did you know that summer is actually WAY more dangerous for backyard chickens than winter? Here's how to keep them safe from overheating or even heat stroke. Hope you love it! #chickenlandia #welcometochickenlandia #petchickens

    South Mississippi here. I purchased a misting system to hook to the big shop fan that I have blowing on my red leghorns, but then I read where the misting could cause serious respiratory issues for my girls. I resorted to simply wetting down the run area on a daily basis. That works well in concert with my big shop fan.

    I noticed in the winter when I would take the water container out of the coop to clean and refill, if there was any snow on the top, they would eat it. So it got me thinking I could make them a cucumber ice slushy because cucumbers are a natural electrolyte. I also like giving them frozen corn which they love, I’ll probably freeze up small cubed watermelon because they love that and tomatoes. Love watching your videos to get great ideas, I have a few other ideas I’m going to try for their outdoor area this year so I’m excited.

    We just moved to Arizona a year ago and this is our first time keeping chickens so everything, for me, is on a learning curve. So far I think we're doing OK- we haven't had any losses, though people nearby have been complaining about losing hens from the heat already. I have a sweater box "pool" I fill with water once in the morning and once at some point in the afternoon. I add frozen vegetables to the afternoon refill to help keep it cool until sundown. I also soak their feed, and I freeze it so 1- they're less likely to kick it all over the place, and 2- it helps keep them cool throughout the day. I only do this stuff on days that it's over 100 though. We put up tarps over their run and shadecloth on the sides to try to help keep the sun off them and everything else. Finally, I come out and hose down the run in their favorite spots so they get that "evaporative cooling" action going. It was still 100 degrees last night at 8:30... I keep my fingers crossed that everyone makes it through to fall OK. So far so good. Come on monsoon!

      I lost 3 to heat this year in South Texas when we had 2 weeks straight of 115F every day.
      I came close to losing Barred Plymouth Rock pullet yesterday.
      We got the poor thing out as it was almost passed out inside the coop. Took her inside the house and filled a container with cool water (not cold but cool). While holding her, I put her legs in the water and then kept splashing it on her underside. Eventually she came back around, and I put her at a bottom of a deep laundry basket and left her there until sundown.
      After sundown we locked up all the other chicks and chickens inside their coop and took the overheated girl home (she was in a currently vacant house on out property ). At home she got food and water and got to sleep in an air conditioned environment.
      By morning she acted normal and rejoined her clan.
      To fight the heat, I give them cool water at least 2 times in the afternoon and also cold watermelon 2 or 3 times.
      I put ice into they water too.
      Heat is really tough on the chickens. I am glad that I own a business and am near them throughout the day.

    June 2022 is hellish in Georgia! I'm keeping my birds cool any way I can. Goldie's under a mulberry bush with her 4 chicks and an old fan to blow their buttfluff around. The Deathlayers are in a shady pokeweed grove. They have water and food, and every so often I bring them iced greenleaf lettuce and grapes. When it's brutal, I dunk 'em in a washtub so their body fluff soaks up some cool-ish water.

      I think a commentor posted that cooling a chicken quickly by dunking in water could kill them. It's something I've heard for the first time and need to confirm. But it's worth it to be sure we keep them safe.

    • @Susie_Floozie
      @Susie_Floozie 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@winniecash1654 You're right to be careful with your birds. I should have been more specific than describing the water temp as "cool-ish." I NEVER dunk them in a cold bath--I make sure the water is just a little cooler than the ambient temperature and lower them slowly into the bath so it isn't a shock. The cooling comes not from a sudden lowering of temp with chill water, but from breezes blowing through their dampened feathers. I only resort to this when they're experiencing distress from unusually high heat.

      I think the number one consideration is where you place your coop. I purposely placed my coop where it would be shady in the summertime. I wasn't worried about the winter cold but I was worried about the heat. I have still lost two chickens to heat. our temperatures here vary greatly throughout the year from anywhere from 10° below 0 to 112° above. on really really hot days I turn on the misting system but I also hosed down as much of the area as possible including the coop roof.

    I keep my chicken in a basement and although they have little natural light or direct sunlight and although I have four windows which ensure good cross ventilation, in the summer it gets quite warm down there... So, I give them lots (and I mean lots! 10-15 Kilograms at a time, for about 70 chicken) of watermelons, melons, cucumbers, tomatoes, lettuce, cabbages, cauliflower etc Besides, even if not fermented for several days, almost all the crushed wheat, barley and corn they eat is given to them after soaking in water... And, the water containers are washed and refilled with fresh cool water every day. For additional electrolytes, besides those they get in the vegetables, I give them about 10 Kgs of boilt potatoes 2-3 times a week, which I boil in water with salt and soda...

Watermelons, grapes, cucumbers are your friends! In moderation, of course. You can also wet their feed (only give as much as they will eat in a day) or ferment it. :)

      Probably a cup. Just see if they want more or don't finish it all. I'd suggest strongly getting 4 birds. One always ends up dying and with only getting 2 if one dies you have a lone bird and they can't be alone. N then you'll have to get a new chick n young aged birds n mature birds do not get along well.

  • @CarolinaGirlCreationZ

    I have read sooooo many guides to this and from what I've learned, cooling chickens off fast is really bad because their body temperature is naturally between 105 and 107 degrees Fahrenheit. I will give my girls room temperature berries as a treat but I'm not doing the frozen stuff anymore. The only other thing I have going in the shaded area under the 3' off the ground coop is a cheap box fan that doesn't put off much air. It's more for keeping the ground dry to avoid coccidiosis. From what all I've learned, chickens will adapt to the conditions they're in, provided the owner picks the right breed for their environment. I love your videos so much and am a new subscriber but some of these methods might not be a good option for folks and may actually do harm to their flock.

    • @WelcometoChickenlandia
      @WelcometoChickenlandia  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Thank you for your input, Heather! Certainly you are correct that lowering a chicken's body temperature fast is not advised. A lot if time, you see people recommending dipping chickens in ice water to break their broodiness. I don't advise this at all. It's just plain not good for them. However, putting frozen berries in their water during a heat wave shouldn't lower their body temperature in a significant way. Mainly, it encourages them to drink the cooler water so that they stay hydrated.

      Baby chicks get chilled pretty easy. Instead of giving them anything frozen, I would just make extra sure they have clean, cool water at all times. You can give them pieces of cucumber and watermelon as well! Just not so much that they are not eating their feed. Fermenting their feed is a great way to get more hydration into them. :)

    My chickens that have big combs and waddles do better in the heat. I got a Delaware not taking the heat into account. I have to watch her during the heat of the day.

    I have two polish chickens and was getting 6 eggs a week from one and 5 from the other the one who lays 6 us older about 1 year and recently went broody but only for one day then she stopped and the other mysteriously has. Why do you think that is? Thanks

      I'm sorry, I'm not totally following the question. One was broody for a day and then stopped and now another one is broody?

      @@WelcometoChickenlandia sorry for not making it clear :) both my polish were laying a lot of eggs one went broody just for a day then stopped laying (this was about a week ago) now the other randomly has stopped. Why?

      @@oscarsbackgardenbirds7460 Ahh I see. They will definitely stop if they go broody and it might take a bit for them to get back to it. Is it hot?

      Oscar's Back Garden Birds thats not too hot. Any disturbance can result in a break in laying. If anything has changed for them recently, even the one going broody, it could cause a pause.
