Wet snow turns into drizzling rain. Thanks to some diplomatic backing and the security clearance of the German and French embassies in Stockholm, I got finally authorization from the Swedish armed forces headquarters to enter the military facility on Gotland, a strategically important island in the middle of the Baltic Sea.
Crouching down into the muddy soil I try best as I can to catch the tense faces of the young soldiers deployed across the coniferous woodland, passing a hidden tank, pausing behind some rocks for a few seconds, then silently moving further towards a trench that separates a small ridge from a large open meadow.
It’s like a choreographed war-ballet, every single fighter fitting smoothly into the well-trained mechanism of their squad. Suddenly some dark silhouettes appear in the grassland ahead. Squad leader Benjamin commands: “Open Fire!”

I worked with a couple guys from Sweden who had just gotten out of the Coastal Rangers. They could run pretty well, and they were very good at orienteering. They were the best at map reading/ orienteering of anyone I'd ever met. And they told me that they'd seen evidence of Russian Special Forces coming onto their islands and then retreating. "Never trust a Russian" they always said.

Glad to see our Swedish friends are taking the current events seriously. I have read that Gotland will be one of the first places that Russians will want to occupy first and control to dominate the Baltics. Time for those good Swedish Bofors 40mm guns be increased on the island along with anti armor UAVs and more of those excellent Swedish tanks.

@@rsrs1136 First of all, Russia doesn't have the logistical capability to even support an invasion of Gotland. We've already seen the fiasco in Ukraine where convoys are being ambushed by light infantry and the goods being either destroyed or captured. Now, take the determination of the Ukrainians and combine that with more modern equipment and tougher terrain that is much easier to defend and you get Sweden. Sweden also has soldiers that are trained and dedicated to ambushing supply convoys and sabotage. My prediction is as follows: Russia will invade Gotland. The Swedish navy and air force will defend the coastline from any supply ships trying to unload. Since Russia can't even secure the airspace over Ukraine that is defended by 30+ year old, 4th generation fighter jets. Russia can't afford to send their newest equipment in masses. Especially not their airplanes. Hell, I'd be surprised if they could scrape together 100 MiG 29s piloted by greenhorns who have just completed training and who barely has 3-digit flight hours. Considering Sweden has a larger and more advanced air force than Ukraine, I'd wish them good luck if they're even able to eject. Ukraine has also been able to sink Russian warships.... without even having a standing navy! So I think Putin would be quite surprised when someone shows him who his daddy really is. If they come, I'll give them one week before they're sent back out into the sea again because they won't be receiving much in ways of supplies and ammunition. They're not even that well equipped t begin with anyway so the only thing scary about Russia is the big red button Putin can push if he feels his own safety is threatened and if he's willing to bring the entire country down with him.

Do you know why Russia annexed Crimea back in 2014?
Well you see, since Ukraine was getting closer to EU and aspired to join NATO yet Russia was not prepared for a full scale invasion. The easiest way for Russia ( as they done with other former Soviet Republics ) was to take a part of that country and by that way simply halt NATO from letting UA join them.
So an invasion can and will often be a small tactical move, there is a reason that Finland and Sweden are speeding up the process and I can guarantee you that there are people with more in depth knowledge about this then you and I have.

You know that it is NATO ( Turkey ) that controls access to the Black Sea?
The primary reason for taking Crimea was to deny NATO and also control the only ice free Naval station for Russia were they can have a full fleet.
Controlling the waterways in all directions is an old Russian doctrine since Peter the Great ( about 350 yrs )
If Crimea is such a high Russian supportive area then I wonder why they did have to run a faux election/ referendum in Crimea.
The reason there are a few Russian supporters all over the world is because they are corrupt in their mind and they know under a totalitarian regime they can make money and power. The majority in UA wants democracy and freedom and are tired of corruption under Russian control as it has been since 1991 and before as part of USSR.
Russia can't stop NATO from entering the Black Sea nor can they control it, however NATO can lock in Russia in the Black Sea and now you understand why Turkey is allowed as a member of NATO but not EU.

Swede here. Not at all. Military service only became mandatory again a couple of years ago. Before that we had like 20 years where it was basically voluntary, or only a tiny percentage of the population were selected for service. We do have conscription, but we also have like 2 or 3 generations of people who mostly have never seen or held a service rifle and who have absolutely no military experience. It's been a long time since Sweden has had any real form of obligatory large-scale military service that could actually be of use when/if the country gets invaded. In that regard, our neighbours to the east the Finns are much better prepared. They have actual mandatory military service, where about 80% of Finnish men are drafted into basic training. Which is where sayings like "everyone's gangsta until the snow starts to speak Finnish" comes from.

War isn't something you'll wish for especially fighting war with Russia. Take a good look at Ukraine for example, their economic has down and it'll take years to recover even if the war ends today, Neutrality is the best because NATO and US will abandon you once the war starts. They'll be encouraging you and promising you they have your back until the war starts and they'll make up an excuse not to involve directly just like they are doing in Ukraine

The purpose is to control the Baltic Sea. Since Peter The Great some 350 yrs ago the Russian doctrine has not changed. It was always about controlling the water to the West.
Then in the times when we got another Czar aspiring imperialist like Putin who wants to rebuild what in his mind was a glorious time with the USSR/ Soviet era well then the island of Gotland is necessary because that is the main key to the Baltic Sea and the final goal the Baltic States.
Also if he could control Sweden and put one of his famous puppet regimes in control he would access Swedish tech and resources.
You know Emperors they just want more and more.

First of all, no they can't and couldn't buy all the tech they wanted.
Do you know one of the topics in the Duma some 6 weeks ago? Let me inform you.
They brought up why there was no nails available in Russia, why Russia don't produce nails for construction.
You live in a corrupt country that is controlled by a few fat pigs that enriches themselves on the cost of the people, nothing new because that is the Russian society the past 400 years.
Russia gave resources but no means to use them or to make the country benefit from them.
The reason Russia or actually I should say Putin wants to control Sweden and Finland is for the reason I mentioned.
You know it was not long ago a Russian spy was caught in Sweden ( again ) buying Swedish technology because Russia can't develop it themselves.
When Russian money is supposed to go to the military only half will be received because of all the corruption. The Russian soldier eat rations now that expired in 2014 and guess why that is so? Corruption.
So what you need to do is stop listening to your corrupted and Kremlin controlled media and open you eyes because the whole world see it apart from a few illiterates.

@@raka522 The commonly accepted theory in Sweden, where the research takes place, is that the island got its name from the Gutes (Gutar in Swedish). They did however have Germanic heritage. The original name of the island was not Gotland but Gutland (first mentioned in the 11th century). In Latin it was in Latin text mentioned as Gutlandia. The name later changed to Gotland but that had nothing to do with Goths.
According to the Gutasaga, written in the 13th century, a third of Gotland’s population migrated south during antiquity. Some people have seen this as an indication that they migrated to European mainland. But according to the oldest gothic source, Jordanes, the goths originated from an island at the mouth of the Visla river in todays Poland. The culture also died out around 500-600 ad.
