Many of the military testing areas were located in otherwise remote areas of the southwest (California, Nevada & New Mexico) away from existing population centers. Back on those early days, environmentalists/geologists/anthropologists/etc weren’t necessarily invited to help select where bases & testing sites should be located. Only after the fact were they brought into the mix, and consulted on how best to “coexist” moving forward. Yikes.
White Sands is otherworldly... but yeah, the US loves its military (defense budget is more than 10 of the world's largest nations combined) and weapons (more guns than citizens).
