You cross your chains for encase the tongue of the trailer comes off the ball hitch. If this occurs, the tongue will fall onto the cross X of the two chains and not strike the ground.
Not going to argue your point but, the real reason has to do with physics. With the chains crossed, when turning, they remain very close to the same elevation off the ground. If they are hooked inline, the chain to the inside of your turn would droop and possibly drag while the opposite chain would be stretched.

It was a joy for me to see the fuel filler with a lock that lets the thing work hands free. Your fuel cart fills me with envy. 😉😉All the self service petrol/gas stations in Oz started getting rid of the lock about 25 years ago. The safety goons decided that we're all to stupid to be able to handle a trigger lock. It's such a pain to have to stand there holding the thing and squeezing the trigger while you're filling.
That was a great one! Up close and personal with the combine. I always see them from the highway as these big machines, no idea what goes on behind the body work. Fascinating, once again.
Because I'm a fan, I truly appreciate you and Grant taking the time out to make the videos. Today I learned that you need to cross the chains when you hitch, that you're Combine uses upwards of 300 gallons per fill, that the soybean stalks being wet are what clogs your combine, and that you need to check your equipment whenever you can to avoid issues. I also learned that the fuzzy crap on the outside of a soybean becomes airborne during harvest and clings to everything in the worst way possible. Love, love, love the kittenz. If you ever need someone to just record video of the kittenz, I would make the trip in a heartbeat.

When I back up to my boat trailer get out and check and I’m close I make a mark on the ground next to the cab the distance I need as a gauge…works most of the time😂
Okay Laura. Loved when you were in the tractor adjusting the seat and you gave us a view of your jeans. True farmer's jeans with dirt probably some grease on them, etc!
I love the whole working together thing. I see a lot of nice ladies introducing stuff that they know nothing about. You two are in harmony and building a life. First class.
As far as pumpkins go? A few farms here have pumpkins and Butternut squash growing throughout their corn. I'm sure some get run over, but its always interesting to see a field full of pumpkins or Butternut squash and corn stubble after harvest. The next part is done by hand. Semi truck into the field and a few guys. Some pick-up and toss them into/ onto the trailer. Others will be stacking. Move the truck a bit and do it again. Enjoy.
Not here to tell you that you did something wrong. Great content! Trailer tip. It has always helped me once you are close. To leave the door open and watch the ground move when you back up to get precise distance… drag your boot and leave a mark if you have a doubt as how far you need to back up 😊
About 5yrs ago I removed a engine from a masy combine and put it in the farm truck and still use it today great job and video God bless from GA stay safe
I’ve recently discovered that in my small Honda generator, ethanol is a huge culprit to carburetor plugging. It turns to water I a tank so I now only running 4cycle clean gas w/o ethanol. My lawn mower also runs much better on non ethanol fuel. Storage of fuel is a tricky deal!
15:25 This summer i had part time job as a tractor driver. I was driving JCB Fastrac, which has max speed 70km/h. And it's realy different to drive a car or tractor in this speed. Especialy when you are pulling 8m long trailer (Arcusin) full of straw bales .
A system that I use since I don't have a backup camera, is that I have a magnetic rod that I place on the ball receiver of the trailer to align my ball hitch with another on the bumper that allows me to get as close to possible the correct distance for the hitch.
I also use a long magnetic rod that I can sight with a defined center line. Additionally my trailer jack is electrically operated from trailer power connector on my truck. I am hauling a much lighter trailer than Laura's fuel trailer.
Just watched the show where you are backing up to hook up the fuel trailer. From an old farmer. Before unhooking the trailer place a 2x4 one foot long behind the rest tire of your truck then just back up to the 2x4 to hook back up it will perfect every time. 😅

No chatter or earbuds have saved our farm countless thousands of dollars as my brothers and I are able to feel and hear any out of the ordinary vibrations or noises before they become major on our cotton pickers and combines. I have one brother who never plugs a combine or cotton picker because he is so in tune with the machinery. I still miss the field suppers of my youth when my grandmother and mom made fantastic meals, and Sunday dinners after church in the morning were truly devine. Keep up the great work.
I think you hired a good person when you hired Gage. He puts in a full day of school plus football practice, then shows up to work his shift. He seems dedicated and hard working.
When I back up to a trailer I do two things. One is to use the outside rear view mirrors to look at the sides of the trailer and the sides of the truck. When the sides of the truck are in line with the trailer are equal I' back up. When I think I'm close I stop backing and go back to see how I'm doing. Let's say I think I'm a foot short.. I go back to the cab and leave the door open. I look down at the ground and pick a stone or a shoe mark or any handy mark on the ground and then I back up as much as I remember from looking at the distance between the ball and the hitch.
That yard sprinkler is OLD! Had one when I was a kid in Minnesota. That was in the mid to late 60's. My mom loved it b/c it moved the right speed for the moisture the yard needed.

If u place a red line on yout tailgate(inside) and make sure the tail gate red line is centered of the hitch, then one red line on your fuel wagon, when u back up just center the two lines and you'll be lined up to hitch whatever trailer that you use.

Jeep doors against wall. I have a friend that built door rack. Truck rim with vertical square tubing. Bar stock for hinges so that two doors face each other on each side. Narrow enough to be convenient and not take up to much space.
a great trick that we use in our operation, is that on the pickup truck beds on the inside, we put a piece of tape where the center is. Then we when unhook the trailers, we put a board behind the back wheels before we unhook so that you know where to backup to. I think it helps to make quick work when your in a rush.

if your beans are 'blown over', try a different direction with the combine - when the stems lean AWAY from the combine, the reels have an easier time getting the stalks upright (esp for comb-style reels); controlled feed = less plugging...
Always enjoy your farm videos. You might try mounting a flag to an antenna...like desert utv's have...tall enough to see over the tailgate. Stick it to the hitch with a magnet and you'll be able to see where the hitch is in relation to the ball. Happy harvesting!
Tandem trailers are hard to manhandle even if they are empty. Just keep trying I love my backup camera. Off-Road Diesel here in Texas is going for $3.50 / gallon going up.
I was on the highway and hit a big bump that knocked my hitch off the ball. The crossed chains were able to catch the hitch and I could pull over safely and get things straightened out. Always cross your chains!
when backing up a vehicle if notice you're a foot away only move vehicle a foot. adjust from there. always try to backup square to trailer. I usually can do it in one try
If you ever want to build a custom fuel tank in a square or rectangular shape, take (in inches) Length X Width X Height, then divide the total by 231, and this will give you the number of gallons. It's nice being able to drive on a trip, then not have to stop as often, plus when I find a place where fuel is cheaper, I top off both tanks. Saves lots of money in the long run, plus in case there is a disaster (like a tornado or hurricane), my Ram 2500 can go way over 2,000 miles without having to stop for, or to find diesel fuel. And if you use a 12 volt solenoid for a transfer valve, make sure it has Viton seals, so the diesel won't leak.

Hey Laura . Here is a tip for you to help you back up to any trailer with a ball hitch with your truck. Take a piece of duck tape and put it on the inside of your tailgate were your hitch is at and take your rearview mirror and push the lever to were you would for driving at nite (or it lets you see down) and then you don't have too turn your neck so hard and with the tape we're it is you should be able to back right under the trailer hitch part!!!!
I guessed 250 gallons. Wow, off by 50 gals.

I have a long stick of wood with a magnet so it stick to top of ball when the stick moves your over the ball it really works
Put marks on the ground to reference your distance or get telescope magnets one for the ball and one for the hitch
If it comes unhooked the chains crossed will help the trailer from swinging back and forth and to keep it behind the toeing truck

Buy the Lankota brush for the center belt and the shark fin to help from clogging up your belts from feeding on one side of the Draper platform.

a great trick that we use in our operation, is that on the pickup truck beds on the inside, we put a piece of tape where the center is. Then we when unhook the trailers, we put a board behind the back wheels before we unhook so that you know where to backup to. I think it helps to make quick work when your in a rush.

For blue tooth back up camera, try "I ball". Works great.
if your beans are 'blown over', try a different direction with the combine - when the stems lean AWAY from the combine, the reels have an easier time getting the stalks upright (esp for comb-style reels); controlled feed = less plugging...

Back up camera or magnetic flags (one on the truck ball and one on the trailer hitch and line them up)
Always enjoy your farm videos. You might try mounting a flag to an antenna...like desert utv's have...tall enough to see over the tailgate. Stick it to the hitch with a magnet and you'll be able to see where the hitch is in relation to the ball. Happy harvesting!

(T-W-W) just hay bails.
Tandem trailers are hard to manhandle even if they are empty. Just keep trying I love my backup camera. Off-Road Diesel here in Texas is going for $3.50 / gallon going up.

I was on the highway and hit a big bump that knocked my hitch off the ball. The crossed chains were able to catch the hitch and I could pull over safely and get things straightened out. Always cross your chains!
Had a loaded trailer and the hitch went up,not down.

when backing up a vehicle if notice you're a foot away only move vehicle a foot. adjust from there. always try to backup square to trailer. I usually can do it in one try
If you ever want to build a custom fuel tank in a square or rectangular shape, take (in inches) Length X Width X Height, then divide the total by 231, and this will give you the number of gallons. It's nice being able to drive on a trip, then not have to stop as often, plus when I find a place where fuel is cheaper, I top off both tanks. Saves lots of money in the long run, plus in case there is a disaster (like a tornado or hurricane), my Ram 2500 can go way over 2,000 miles without having to stop for, or to find diesel fuel. And if you use a 12 volt solenoid for a transfer valve, make sure it has Viton seals, so the diesel won't leak.
One other thing most of you are forgetting is when you turn straight g t chains make the turning limited where cross don't
We all need the gospel everyday! Farming in the east is Soo different. We farmed a few years in nw Wisconsin. Mom was very sick, so we had to come back to ne pa. No longer have parents or grand parents. Sorry for your loss. Hope to talk to Laura & Grant more. Privately very soon!

Hey Laura . Here is a tip for you to help you back up to any trailer with a ball hitch with your truck. Take a piece of duck tape and put it on the inside of your tailgate were your hitch is at and take your rearview mirror and push the lever to were you would for driving at nite (or it lets you see down) and then you don't have too turn your neck so hard and with the tape we're it is you should be able to back right under the trailer hitch part!!!!
