  • My Pokémon Yellow Legacy Romhack Pikachu solo run!
    No items were used in battle, no Pokémon were used in battle aside from Pikachu, and evasion boosting moves were ignored.
    Thanks to Phantom for the thumbnail! I- I did do it on day one, I just wasn't able to make the video as quickly as I wanted. For reasons.

    Seriously though it's exactly what I just said it is: 3 hours of silent, raw footage. Why would you want that?

    I probably would have let Double Team hang around a bit longer, since you don't really get outsped for Agility to matter.

      I mentioned it in the description, but not the video itself, but I just kind of didn't want to use Double Team. It turns every fight into a luck based affair, and since it also enables the badge boost glitch, it just feels extra cheesy in Gen I especially.
      If I wasn't so convinced I could do it without, though, then yeah, Double Team would have been far and away the optimal choice over Agility.

      @@guinealottie1330 for what it's worth, since pikachu's buff mainly is that it gets double badge boost I feel like double team being broken on it is very much on purpose. Thunder wave + double team setup with double badge boost just makes too much sense even if it's very much op.

    Critical Hits in gen 1 are different. Instead of being a flat 20% with some boosted critical hit chance moved, each pokemon has their own critical hit rate which is based on their speed. Importantly, this means that for some pokemon, they are guaranteed to get a critical hit when using a boosted critical hit chance move. Given that they fixed Focus Energy so that it actual increases critical hit chance, I think that there is a lot of potential for abuse.
    I've watched a lot of "Scott's Thoughts" Pokemon Yellow series, so I want to mention damage rounding thresholds. As pokemon's level is included in the damage calculations, the rounding in the calculations mean that you get a major damage boost at levels that end in 0, 3, 5 and 8. Unlike the critical hit chance, this is still true in modern pokemon games.

      While I know about how critical hit rates are calculated in Gen I (I maybe just wasn't overly clear that I was specifically talking about Pikachu and not every Pokémon, I don't know, that stuff is second nature to me so my explanations can sometimes be lacking), and I knew level was an important part of the damage calculation (relevant to another challenge I did that'll be made into a video soon), I didn't know that last part. I assumed every level would have an even weight on the formula, but that knowledge about the rounding is actually quite interesting, thank you for telling me.

    Considering that this is how I ran through the game when I was young (didn't make it past surge) gotta say pika is definitely buffed for the Brock fight. I had to level my chu up to learn Slam and still needed to rely on my lower leveled bugs and birds with their extra tackles before they fainted.

    • @guinealottie1330
      @guinealottie1330  27 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      Pikachu is buffed, but its Attack isn't any higher and Onix is buffed a lot too. I do think I got lucky to win in only three tries, but I also think it's not totally infeasible in vanilla Yellow at similar levels. Geodude is more the issue, as it usually does more damage than Onix.
      The extra damage from Slam would absolutely make it much easier though, yeah!

      @@guinealottie1330 that makes sense! I've only ran through yellow once as an adult. I just have vivid memories of getting the game on my birthday in November and not beating Brock until Christmas. It's awesome that you managed it at a lower level! Makes me wanna give it a try.

    Why didn't you go for paraflinching? Thunder had its accuracy boosted to 85% in this hack. These would've been useful against The Hiker, Giovanni 1, Koga, and even Lorelei.

    • @guinealottie1330
      @guinealottie1330  25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I was out of Headbutt PP by the time I reached the hiker, and I didn't want to go back through Rock Tunnel unless I was certain I couldn't win, so I just taught Cut over Headbutt (and as a result, I didn't have Headbutt any more when I got to Giovanni 1). As for Thunder, I did see the accuracy increase, but its PP also lowered from 10 to 5, which meant it wasn't reliable for random trainers, and I'd need to return to the Pokémon centre often. It's not like Koga or Lorelei were at all hard or anything, I still think not learning Thunder was definitely the correct play.
