Bento is cold because it is originally for outside eating like picnic, in shinkansen or at office. And bentos with many fried are the modern convini bento. But if you go to the Big train station or home made bento you will find very different bento.
My half Japanese friend got me to try Natto and I described it as, Smelling like rotting garbage with the consistency of lumpy snot. So Emma was spot on.
love watching these great gals ranking so many foods honestly I think they are mostly on the money with a few exceptions here and there props to sarah for liking natto
Should have gotten the entire Tokyo Creative crew together to rate their most loved and hated Japanese foods and made a day of it. Too many amazing and not so amazing Japanese food options for this video to cover.
We should get a part two on some lesser known foods! Jingisukan and unagi are some of my personal favorites since moving to Japan. Overall, agree with these rankings. Can’t believe Umeshu almost got done dirty 😂
Yeah, these were all rather "safe" picks, except maybe for the natto. And I'm kinda surprised that very popular stuff like gyudon, curry and takoyaki didn't even make this list. A few suggestions for the part two besides the ones already mentioned: gyutan (needs something above S-tier!), hiyashi chuka, basashi, kushikatsu, anago and motsunabe. Or if they want to get really adventurous, how about some shiokara or funazushi?
Where would these end up being ranked? Karaage, Onigiri, Takoyaki, Dango, Curry, Katsu, Yakitori, Tempura and any others you can think of for another edition of this ranking?
It is interesting to know different people's take on Japanese food. I suggest doing a ranking between someone who lives in Japan, someone who has stayed in Japan for quite a while, and a newbie who's been in Japan for a short time.
feel the same way about 豚骨ラーメン。I have friends visit and that's ALL they want to get back to back to back, and just ramen in general. Feel like after living in Japan it doesn't become bad but all those cravings went away... Same with like all the noodle dishes haha Also for 駅弁、It really depends on the area... A lot of the reason why they're popular is regional ingredients or popular shops. What happens with most people being turned off from them is yes, the obvious marketing and dishes that are available to people who just quickly glance are fried, not as healthy etc... But the premiere ones are usually wrapped and stocked within their own respective area which REQUIRES you to seek them out. it's a blessing and a curse (you always can find them, harder to find). But some companies take pride in their dishes being colder like you said, same with common commercial ones that come in the めんち or そぼろ variety... Cold isn't always bad (I also love cold pizza so I might be weird :p). Either way, 駅弁 i totally get isn't a premiere meal either way, but I also think there's an 駅弁 for everyone >:)
I agree w most but i need to try more udon dishes and the okonomiyaki w mochi would be the next food to eat when I visit Japan again. U did not rate onigiri and takotaki.
It's a fair list. You guys are so respectful, how can anyone hate on the choices? For me as a foreigner, we don't have a lot of good ramen, udon, skewers, sushi and even if we did, it would cost us an arm and a leg. Toriki for me was amazing since the quality isn't as bad and for 2, would only pay 5000 yen. Had premium ones as a set for 3500 for 2. Where as if I went to an American one, it would cost 150$ (21,900 Y) since they are scarce. I stumbled across the best sushi of my life in a random small sushi conveyor belt in Shinjuku and spent 2900 yen (19$) but had sushi in the States and pay 70$ (10,000 Y) for myself. So all the noodles skewers sushi for me become S tier/A tier xD
I've been exploring cooking for myself. This year, I asked my hubby to buy me a tamagoyaki pan for my b'day, id tried cooking it in a western round frying pan, but it was too hard to roll. He got it for me and ooooo how does it taste even better when cooked in the tamagoyaki pan? Same method, just more awkward to roll in a eound pan. Last time i cooked it, i tried it with seasoned kombu and the flavour was so good! Next time, i want to add shredded surimi as well. One day, I will get the chance to visot Japan and try everything for reals
I think we have different tastes on a lot of things. Chestnuts, highball, etc yes! Conbini bento you are right, but homemade bento.... much higher tier. I agree with okonomiyaki! I also really like a good bowl of ramen but I wouldn't have it everyday since I don't think that'd be healthy. So far I think mochi is just overrated. Yeah... it's chewy & very one note? Needs something else for me. There's better traditional sweets. One of my fav japanese-only styles is sesame ice cream. The ones I've tried in the US all have coconut in them and it ruins the smoky sweet flavor.
Not too savage. Torikizoku does have good skewers, especially the liver, heart and chicken meatballs with cheese. And i normally do not eat heart. And juicy liver that's not dry as a shoe's exterior...just great! Although I like a Nikka highball, i had a good amount of lemon and calpis chuhais in Tokyo and Osaka. Yes i went in August despite the warnings of the chaotic duo and Chris' book
I have been watching TC's videos for a long time and love them, watching you guys travel around Japan, take in the sights and eat everything in sight. ;-) In addition to these fun things, though, have you ever considered a series in which you interview Japanese scientists working in different fields, technologists working on who knows what...In other words, the hidden side of what has established Japan's reputation as a leader in science and technology.
Unpopular opinion, 1 shot Nihonshu 1 glass/schooner of Sapporo or Asahi is so good like 1 shot of Nihonshu and Calpis. Fruity nihonshu though, Jikon Junmai (orange bottle) is my favourite when paired with fish or sashimi.
Here in Fukuoka…steer clear of any chain shops. You’ll save money, and get the real deal. Especially with yakitori and yakiniku. Ramen too. No English menus, no one speaks English. Just take a chance if you can’t speak the language. You’ll enjoy it so much more.
For the dishes I have tried, I can agree with this chart. Would love to try Kakigōri, but I'm not sure I could survive the Japanese summer heat to get myself there to try it 🥵☠️ Maybe Hokkaido 🤔 I'm an Autumn person 🍁✨💜 I'm not sure the editor is but they made me laugh 😂
かき氷(kakigouri) is always great, if you're like me who sleeps with the AC on even during winter or orders iced coffee no matter the time of the year, it's amazing.... I will say though, if you're not that type of person and you like to get cold things when its hot, Japan lately has been so terrible with it's heat that not even かき氷 can fix it xD
I love matcha tea, but I have a friend who always says it looks like swamp water. Thats why anytime I drink it, I start playing All Star by SmashMouth and get into my best Shrek cosplay. It really accentuates the experience.
@@mikekun155 a large portion of the 駅弁 that are offered in the shinkansen terminals/gates I agree, are kinda MEH. But depending on the station and area, there are specialty shops and there is a REASON why they're so popular... However, you need to know what to look for which is the hard thing especially for people who don't know the regional shops/areas etc... I feel like a lot of the foreigners give a bad rep to 駅弁 as they just take のぞみ on the Kansai-Tohoku line and are only presented with mass-appeal bento's (even though like I said there are better ones even behind the gates if you know what to look for).... The culture exists for a reason man/girl!!I am no otaku to ekiben but I swear ever since I've taken time to research my departing station or transfer station to see what is available, I have been VERY impressed. (This is also coming from a $15 budget xD)
What about curry? a classic Katsukare? We needed more dishes (takoyaki, dango, melonpan, tempura, edamame...) to get a complete view of all the good tastes....🤤
Natto is the best for me... I know if you have are "sensitive" to weird textures it might not be for you but I personally love it. It's my favorite food in the world.
Hi Emma! I never liked chestnuts either until I tried 'kestane şekeri' it's Turkish candied chestnut they are cooked in a syrup and are not dry but retain a crumbly texture. I love them. I wonder if they sell them in Japan! I am curious if you would like this variation.
It was interestingto watch and hear a little of your opinions (some of which I agreed with), but my biggest issue was with how broad the categories were! I think that's why you had too many at the top, you need to split up things like ramen and green tea. Made me think about how I would rank certain things, though. I am a really big fan of Wagyu. Japanese Beef is amazing. But i had a Tepanyaki with A5 some weeks ago. Too fatty... not my things. Normal wagyu is much better in my opinion!
Do you agree with our rankings? Let's keep it civil in the comments 😉🍣
meat
I love Emma and Seera... but this hurt my feelings... ALOT. 😢
Aint no way you can just walk around Japan safely after giving Wagyu beef a B tier rating. 🤯
Nah, many misses
Yeah you guys are lame. I get these are subjective but you both have zero taste.
Sorry my palate is not that sophisticated 😁 I mean.. my favourite food is bread guys!! hahaha
Bread is really awesome though! OK maybe not Japanese bread...
Same 😂 sometimes I just take a slice of bread as snack. But I do like A LOT of food
As Long as its Not sweet japanese bread😂😂
Definitely not Japanese bread 😂

Yakitori as a B-tier!?!
Get some on the street markets!

@@fukuokakusuo2391 last winter, I ate some Motsunabe in Fukuoka and it was incredible. So underrated and not well known outside Japan!

Love the Australian accent coming out strong with Sarah
The ramen and yakiniku rankings are crazzyyyy
Where would these end up being ranked? Karaage, Onigiri, Takoyaki, Dango, Curry, Katsu, Yakitori, Tempura and any others you can think of for another edition of this ranking?
❤once again my favorite duo. Just Love these two. 😊
For relaxing times.. Sarah & Emma. Thank You for presenting various options!

Try eating natto like this:
- Prepare natto as usual
- Prepare canned fish/cook bacon &/ minced meat.
- Cook udon/maitake udon - cool
- Cut avocado, cook sliced shiitake mushrooms + enoki mushrooms +/shimeji mushrooms
[- Add cooked edamame + pitted olives]
- Wash mini tomatoes
- Prepare a white sauce
[- Cut tofu into cubes]
- Combine udon/maitake udon with other ingredients [add kimchi] & enjoy.

Yuzu-shu is god tier (Shah - the cameraman)
Emma and Sarah make me so happy
Very surprised with the Bento rating. I think it's because I don't mind eating cold food (as long as there's no white grease).
Particularly the bentos at the shinkansens are mainly crap. Even cold they are mid at best and are way too overpriced.

And red beans > ramen??? No way!
I love japanese food, but ramen it's the best, always!!!! Not for everyday obviously, but it's the choosen one for special days!!!
Visiting Japan for the first time in April and since my budget is not hefty I expected to survive on Bento. Now I'm bit worried :D
Bento is not that cheap and healthy. Go to some beef bowl, udon, or soba chains and eat warm, fulfilling meals.

Japan's food tierlist can be considered as like "Food that tastes too good to believe" or "What is this abomination". Nothing in between.
i agree with emma, i tried natto once and it tasted like i swallowed my own pheglm
Hey now sake has to be S tier, it's amazing when served hot there's no drink quite like it.
