Well I think I’ve been to Hibiki, but not for lunch. From memory it was pretty good 😅

It’s a toss up between the okonomiyaki place and the chicken nanban place. For the cost it looks like you get more protein from the okonomiyaki so I would probably go with the okonomiyaki. It would also depend on which is quicker though since lunch breaks are time wise limited.

This was such a fun idea! And love going somewhere people can find what they want to eat each based on their taste, versus the long discussions over who's going to compromise or get upset their choice wasn't picked is so much better! The food (and personalities) were amazing!
Tokyo is a great place for that - you can find a huge variety of foods, especially in the department stores

Why don’t more gaijin eat Japanese curry? It’s as much a lunchtime salaryman staple as ramen. It all looks super good but I would probably go with the okonomiyaki for under $10. Yum!
It's okay, but it's not something I would ever choose to eat on my own, unless I was bored of all my preferred options. It's probably my least favorite Asian curry.

I was a salaryman in Osaka 92-93. My favorite lunches:
1. Bakery
2. Set meal in little house next to Mita HQ
3. Chinese
4. Standing Ramen
No curry houses close but I ate curry 🍛 as often as possible

i got a question about japan that, when you are done with your meal at a restaurant do you leave all your plates on the table and leave or do you take them somewhere??
Depends on the place. Most of the time you just leave it there on the table but when you have a rack or little kiosk to bring back your plates it's usually pretty obvious. Also by looking at other clients once they finish :P

As @m4nusky said - depends on the restaurant. Usually you'll see a 'drop off'/'return' station looking thing if it's a store where you take back your plates yourself

The options for lunch in Japan is nearly unlimited for a budget of 1000 yen. You can’t even get a salad for $10 state side

Cool video! Just something to note, the Japanese yen is not neatly paired with the American dollar 100-1 for over a year, so 1000 yen is actually 7 dollars, not 10.
I thought salarymen had whatever their bosses would eat and drink, or whatever their bosses TOLD THEM to eat or drink. 😁
Okonomiyaki is often referred to as a Japanese "pizza" or pancake. But isn't a crepe a more accurate description? Wow, that's a lot of bonito flakes..."Would like a bit of okonomiyaki with your bonito flakes, sir?" 🙂
Fun Fact: "kotegaeshi" is also a wrist twisting technique in the martial art of aikido. Hopefully they don't have to twist your wrist to get you to try the daily special.
IMHO "crêpe" would suggest something that is extremely thin (and usually folded over or wrapped), which okonomiyaki are not.
@@jc3drums916 True but then "pizza", when some people call it a "Japanese pizza" would denote a bread crust with likely cheese on top so comparing okonomiyaki to a pizza is not accurate either. Any comparisons are really metaphoric or analogous than literal.
My conclusion was because the batter used by okonomiyaki is, I believe, closer to crepe batter primarily comprised of eggs, liquid, and flour or starch. American pancake batter has a leavener like baking powder and is thicker and puffier BUT I will concede that "potato pancakes" or Jewish latkes capture the same concept as okonomiyaki so maybe "pancake" is a good descriptor.
An Italian fritatta might also be a fair comparative.

Going to sound rather odd - but do you get half portions in Japan? I am told you cant ask for a takeaway.
Quite a few places will do takeaway if you ask, but don't be surprised if someone says they can't do it. You can usually ask for less rice or something and most restaurants can accommodate that
