    It's good to see the Coast Guard getting a new ship!

    • @sword_of_light
      @sword_of_light 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      She's lightly armed for such a large ship - at least large in terms of the US Coast Guard. The Famous-class still sports the rapid-fire 76mm, as does the Hamilton-class, which I think the Heritage-class is meant to replace. I know the USCG downgraded a lot of its weapons systems after the end of the Cold War, but it's interesting how much more lightly armed they all seem to be getting despite how involved they are in the South Pacific.

      @@sword_of_light Yeah but I wouldn't be to worried about it thought. The U.S. Coast Guard don't rarely ever participate in any global war besides search and rescue mission. The closest danger would probably be engaging in piracy or drug smuggling. Also arming them would be costly since they also have to account for personals who needs to be trained to operate and maintaining the weapons. As for the large size, this would be good for the Coast Guard to traverse across the Ocean for instance going to Hawaii or Alaska if need be.

    • @sword_of_light
      @sword_of_light 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      @@zeroinfinity9189 - No. The US Coast Guard has been fighting global conflicts since the French Quasi-War of 1798. They were escorting convoys in WWII, as well as piloting landing craft. A Coast Guardsman named Douglas A. Munro was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for leading the rescue of three Marine companies during the Battle of Guadalcanal. In the Vietnam war, the US Coast Guard were the first US vessels to patrol the Mekong Delta, as the US Navy at the time had no shallow-draft vessels that could navigate the river.
      Currently, the Coast Guard has numerous vessels deployed in the South Pacific at the request of allied nations like the Philippines, to counter-act aggression by Chinese militia vessels pretending to be fishermen. If conflict with China occurs, the US Coast Guard will likely be the ones first on the scene.

      @@sword_of_light Heritage class is replacing the Reliance class of Medium endurance cutters. (NSC class is replacing the Hamiltons) The main reason that the USCG Famous class had so many 76mm guns is they harvested them off the Perry class frigates as they were retiring. It was "upgunned" -- the Reliance mediums had the same 25mm guns as the Heritage secondary mounts. So they are more equipped than their predecessor. (personally I think they need a SeaRAM and CWIS for close in antimissile defense)
      Famous class are still in service into the 2030s.

      @sword_of_light 22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@redwolfexr - I agree that more defensive measures need to be in place if we're dealing with the Chinese. But, you're always fighting the last war. I remember the Hamiltons got CWIS, and I don't think that was removed after the Cold War. But there need to be drone defenses, at least, on all the cutters.
      What worries me the most however isn't the ships or the guns. It's the failing helo fleet. The Jayhawks were starting to show their age when I was in, and the Dolphins were state of the art, but that was 40 years ago. And I haven't heard any good news about replacements or funding.

      They decommissioned the first group of Littoral combat ships because they were defective. Issues with the power plant with one class and hull on the other, being two of the larger issues. From what I’ve heard they fixed the issues and that’s why they’re moving forward. However, if I’m wrong it wouldn’t surprise me that they still move forward…. The original idea behind them is sound, but for all practical purposes, the early ships of both classes ended up as test beds as they figured out what does work and what doesn’t work. That said, both classes ended up as victims of feature bloat, as the Navy tried to make them into mini Arleigh Burkes, with the capacity a little bit of everything.

      Need more submarines. Germany almost won both world wars with submarines alone. Similarly, America devastated the Japanese supply lines in WW2. Hard to detect and can carry special forces, cruise missiles and torpedoes. The surface ships are needed to protect the carrier. Problem is that you need a very highly nuclear power trained crew. Hard enough to recruit people for non-nuclear surface ships.

    • @victorglaviano
      @victorglaviano 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @hjusn absolutely incorrect, in fact Germany's lack of an effective surface fleet, lack of surface warfare skills allowed the Royal Navy to control the English channel, keep the shipping lanes open and Germany had no Amphibious capability. If Germany had a good fleet of general purpose surface combatants like destroyers and cruisers, couple aircraft carriers Amphibious ships with Naval Infantry or Marines in early 41 they could have blockaded the English ports causing lack of supply, RN Naval base at Portsmouth and landed an amphibious force establishing a beach head supported by surface combatants, CAS and U-Boats could have sunk merchant shipping and possibly invaded the UK before 1942, things may have been different. Look at the Kriegamarine lack of surface Naval skills, no US, UK or even IJN Captain would have taken a huge Battleship into restricted waterways like the fjords. The British were scared shitless of the Graf Spie and I can't remember the name of the other one, until they saw the inexperience and absolute ignorant move by Germany and then probably thought what a bunch morons, it was unable to maneuver and fire although it had superior weapons and range. But the British were masters of naval warfare along with the US and Japan (carbon copy of the RN).
      BTW, the Aircraft Carrier is what won the war in the Pacific, not submarines. Before late 43, submarines weren't being used correctly by the US, they were mostly used to collect intelligence and watch the IJN transit and move troops to the Solomons, Boganville, and Guadalcanal. Although the US had a great submarine, but horrible torpedoes until then, with a failure rate as high as 40% - 50%. The Battle of Coral Sea was the battle that changed Naval warfare forever, it over a few days made the Carrier the Battle Group the capital ship and the Battleship on its way to the scrap yard. Hence why today the modern fleet has the Carrier Battle Group (CVBG) not the Submarine Battle Group! SSNs are a part of CVBG, usually 2 Las Angeles Class, Seawolf Class or Virginia Class.
      First Naval battle where neither side saw one another on each other's ships, only aircraft.
      NO MAJOR NAVAL POWER HAS EVER BEEN DOMINANT OR VICTORIOUS WITH SUBMARINES AS THE MAIN SHIP OF THE LINE, NONE! By early 44 the casualty rate for U-Boats was the highest amongst land, sea and air units, 50% casualties, essentially a suicide mission.
      You're not versed in Naval warfare, I spent 23 years in the Navy half in the Pacific. After a submarine fires a torpedo and scores a hit, it's living on borrowed time. The air, surface and SSN especially the US SeaWolf class which was designed for exactly this, hunting and killing enemy submarines will bracket, use the MAD on helos from DDGs, FFGs or the carrier. P-8s will sortie, they have the MAD, sonobuoys and here's the dirty secret about submarines most non Naval warfare people don't know....submarines can't strike air contacts, they have no surface to air capabilities, no one does not even the US, Russia or the UK the most advanced and most experienced Navys in the world, especially the US and UK, oh and the French! So Naval warfare isn't getting a bunch of conscripts and use them as cannon fodder. It requires strategic and tactical prowess, ability to refuel and resupply at sea (US is absolute master of this), use Naval, air, Amphibious and submarine warfare simultaneously. Sailors need to be specialists, along with ability to conduct damage control and firefighting while in battle. Lastly Naval assets are very finite and can't stay engaged if taking heavy losses, they again have to be used strategically. Captains and Admirals need to know when to disengage, withdraw and disappear over the horizon, use Islands and electronic warfare effectively to mask the ships, can't build ships overnight!

    • @victorglaviano
      @victorglaviano 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@hjusn you're obviously inexperienced and ignorant of Naval warfare, I suggest you read about Taffy-6, Bull Halsey, Admiral Arleigh Burke and US 5th Fleet, Admirals Spruance and Yamato. US Navy's doctrine and information available about Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW). The US were the giants of modern Naval warfare in WWII which was the golden age of Naval warfare in the modern era. The US and UK, especially the US with Carrier warfare and Amphibious warfare, the British are very good with submarines, along with the Russians. The French are also a decent Naval power. More isn't always, more in Naval warfare. China, hasn't won a major Naval battle since Jesus walked the earth. Russia since the 1400s. The US, UK and believe it or not Japan are the most experienced Navys in the world, especially the US and UK. Naval warfare isn't I'll build a bunch of ships and be the master of the seas, that's not going to happen. Way more variables like surface, submarine, air, Amphibious and littoral warfare simultaneously. While being able to conduct RAS and battle repairs in real time, without allowing assets to be vulnerable and exposed incorrectly and therefore the enemy's submarines or even Naval Special Warfare to destroy them while thinking they're safe and sound. Then conduct littoral warfare, hitting enemy inland waterways, ports and other riverine targets. So it's far more complicated than say a Infantry Brigade Commander, not taking away from the infant, just completely different and comes from constant training, great and effective maintainance cycles and inspections, ships will fall apart if not adhered to, look at Russia, horrible maintenance and preventative maintenance or lack thereof. They literally have ships with decks rusting through into the sea.

      Well they have yet to approve the frigate design that Congress demanded be purchased off the shelf for the purpose of speed of construction. They essentially are redesigning it from scratch, ignoring their Congressional mandate. And even then, when I was working I could have produced the 3D drawings myself, alone, in less than 6 years. The hold up is in the drawing approvals.
      They are still decommissioning more ships than they are producing and they are going to go down to like 1.2 Virginia's a year now. China is rapidly outpacing us and I don't ever see Australia getting their subs at this rate. Congress has poured countless billions down a hole trying to get them competitive with the Chinese construction rates, but nothing improves. The whole system needs an overhaul.

    1 class of ship I would begin building ASAP are big boy ice breakers.
    Things have been looking sketchy in the Antarctic for quite some time now.
    By building these Ice breakers now, we could have parity with the Russians are they cannot build more of these ships due to the war in Ukraine.
    Time to outsource some of the Naval needs to allies to keep up with new ships builds as well as being in front of the curve with decommissioning of old unreliable inventory.
    There are plenty of countries who would love to build new ships for us at a better cost.
