When I was 23 and 28 I biked across the US and down the west coast respectively. Now at 53 I look back at those trips with great fondness. Once my kids are self sufficient I'll pick the torch back up - The US east coast awaits. I love the idea of micro adventures and already have something in mind. Thanks for the spark.

Absolutely inspiring! When I was 25 I moved to New Zealand from Malaysia with just $600 in my pocket to start my new life and when I was 28 in 2013/2014 summer I had a chance to cycle around New Zealand twice.. that was my first dream before I came here.. basically I cycled the whole islands for 3 months it’s so wonderful experience.. now 32 yrs old i dropped out of school cos I’m poor I have a financial crisis, I suffered from depression, bad lil business didn’t go well.. I literary left nothing I lost everything I’m a jobless apart from self employed Uber.. but I’m hoping life will get better to get back to start my new job sometime next week.. btw I’ll never give up! I’m still on my mission to travel the world! In 2 or 3 years I’m moving to Canada and I’m gonna start my mission cycling from Vancouver to Montreal then continue my epic adventure from Alaska in the U.S North America to Patagonia in Chile South America! Thanks for this video really boost my spirit & keep me motivated.

Hi. Alistair I do alot of micro stuff in the winter to prepare for the spring. The small trips are rewarding too . I've biked for weeks in the UK with little cash. Folk are great to help as its there story also. Its the journey not the destination. Steve. Scotland.

I am so jealous, not because that you are traveling and having so much fun, but because you so full of courage. I wish I get infected with that courage :). A story about me ... I migrated in US with 400 $ in my pocket. And for last 20 years, I made more than an average American makes. I have a house paid off and drawing a salary way above 6 figures. Also, I am almost single at this point of time, my parents are retired and they are all doing well. But what I am always worried about is loosing all that I have. Some times it keeps me awake. In early age, I lost lot, both at money and at personal level and I am still scared. That's why when I see courageous people, it makes me feel sad. I always question, why I am not like them... :(

DB- don't know if you'll get this reply after posting over a year ago, but I was made sad, partly by your post and partly by the fact that no-one had replied to it. When you come from a background where life was maybe uncertain, it's understandable that you would wish to protect yourself by making sure you have plenty of provision for the future. You've done that and so now you can maybe afford to take a little risk. You don't have to start out massive like this guy, you could just go off on a mini adventure for a weekend. I'm a keen wilderness hiker and I have spent months at a time on the trail, but that doesn't mean I can't enjoy a few hours hiking in the countryside near where I live. You may also be able to join a club of like-minded people and ease yourself in that way, rather than having to do it alone. Remember learning to swim? Done the right way, we spend many weeks, months, even years, happily playing in the shallows before we're confident enough to dive in at the deep end. So maybe you'll never make it to the deep water, or maybe you will, but either way don't let it prevent you enjoying the shallows:-)

What a great reminder of how adventures don't have to cost a fortune, and the risk of regret should out weight the risk of failure.

Amazing! Loved your talk in Bristol last year :) Thank you Alistair you give people a reason for exploring, for doing things they wouldn't normally do, you are very special to give others that freedom!.
You are a truly gifted human being.

My sense is that to be a legitimate adventure the outcome must not be guaranteed. Good stuff.

Alastair, thank you for your inspiration! I first read about you in Adventure Cyclist Magazine, about 15 years ago. I emailed you, and you very graciously replied. The encouragement you gave me was just what I needed, to help me do a solo self-contained bicycle journey from Iowa, to Washington, D.C., in the summer of 2007. Thank you for all you do!

Many countries you can just buy visas at the border. Also as he's British he will be able to easily get visa's or even get visa exemptions in many countries.

Big on the idea of going, but less so on the substance, the detail - the people he met, the places he went and the experiences he had on his journey. In the end I skimmed through it. I was very disappointed with this lecture. Read his books which were great, but this lecture didn't live up to my expectations given there are so so many good blogs and vlogs on the internet by other RTW cyclists. If you want inspiration check out Cycling Central Asia by Pete Root and Mary Thompson sadly no more as they were run down by a truck in Thailand, but their films show the joy and freedom of cycling around the world in remote places. Also check out CrazyGuyOnABike.com hundreds of brilliant cycle touring journals there.
