Worms have gullets, similar to something like a turkey, to help them break down food. In worm composting, we give them "grit" like coffee grounds, crushed up eggshells, etc. They have probably eaten that iron as grit and now they are magnetic.

One of the best videos. This is how I operate on a daily basis, very explorative but on a really basic but interesting way 😊
"These are the ferrous worms!" *runs excitedly*.
This is not something that I expected to see or hear but I'm glad I did.
TH-cam brings us all to the most unexpected places.

@@chrisbaker9704 That's SIR Ian[McKellen] to you!
“Worms, worms on the crawl, who’s the ferrous of them all?”
i see what you did there!
I love that you picked up your camera and started recording... :)
get your Geiger counter out, quick !!!
Dr. Tatapolis?
actually maybe thats a decent way of measuring soil radiation as well
I scrolled too far for this. Up you go!
Perhaps this is the key to creating a “worm hole”
Yes
This made me laugh
Well played ol' chap, well played.
Imagine your a worm minding your own business eating some iron and the you getting pulled through the air and look up and Destin is just giggling 😂
💀💀💀😂

@@the_retag Thanks didn’t even notice
"huh, this soil tastes a little different from usual, i'm going to go ask the other worms if they n-AHHHHHHHHHHHH"
Definitely my favorite Smarter Every Day video discovered so far. I appreciate you, Destin.
The fact you released this on April fool's means I legally cannot trust you without trying it myself.

Yeah they didn't
@@thatgaming1940 Says Apr 1 in my time zone
The world isn't perfect yet, but being able to watch a video about worms with magnetic properties that you just made in your backyard is pretty darned cool.

Thank you, Destin! I love watching your videos. I often showed them to my students in the Science class. I learned a lot from you. Keep it up! Thanks a lot!!!!
After Destin gets shocked, you can see a spark between the worm and the magnet at 1:14
I don't know what kind of reaction you expected from your audience. But I just wanted to say thank you, because of this random video I actually found myself enjoying the process I went through to come up with my own hypothesis. It's funny how something so simple became so engaging and I thank you for bringing it to my attention.
You deserve to be in a pinned comment
Awesome. As a retired teacher I was filled with joy by how excited you guys were working through that problem.
"This makes us mad because nobody's told us this before" LMAO 🤣
Person: “What did you do this afternoon?”
Them: “Picking up worms with magnets”
That kind of accidental "huh, that's weird!" moment is how real breakthroughs are made.
True
Yep, LED.. think about If no-one never try to put voltage for some weird rocky mineral junk..
I'm 33, watching 2 grown men on TH-cam, playing with magnetic worms. This is what I'm doing with my life.
You doin' right, my man!
im 35 and now im scrolling through the comments
Ahem ... *ferrous* worms.
Then the worm is eaten by a fish = magnetic fish which is caught and eaten by a man = the origin story of magneto that we’ve always wanted.
This comment made me actually LOL
Is mercury magnetic?
@@JerryDLTN no
@@jan237 but iron is? Iron in the dirt
@@SpoilerAlert__ Yes. Iron is magnetic. Even if it's iron dust and even if it's rusted (because rust contains iron oxide, which is also magnetic).
You've just proved that your emailing list works because i'm just seeing this video 2 years after it was created so i wasn't aware of it.
