I spent many days picking up pecans on haves with my grandfather when I was a kid. We would pickup literally 100's of buckets every year and half what we picked up with the landowner. We would then take them to be cracked. We would spend days sorting and bagging every one before thanksgiving in 2lbs bags. My fondest memories were picking pecans, grapes and berry's from the side of the road. It was such a wonderful time in my life. Thanks for sparking these memories with this video.
I love watching shows like "How It's Made" to get glimpses at all of the wonderful ingenuity that goes into everyday things that we never know about. But with "Smarter Every Day," we not only get the 'how' but the 'why' -- I was fascinated at even just the discussion about springs versus constant air pressure to shell the nuts. And the footage of the trees here is unbelievably beautiful. Well done, as always!
It would be awesome if he sold a blu-ray of his best videos so we could watch them without compression. Either that or host them on a separate website.
I am blessed to have a neighbor who is super nice just like him. Our friendship has endured even though he is on the complete opposite political spectrum from me.
16:13 Just imagine if everyone, every business, worked for the satisfaction they get from their job/craft instead of just for earning money. The world would be so different!
Yes the world would be different..... There would be more people living in poverty. This world is a rat race sadly. Better to find a career path that can support your interests than make your interest your career for little money.
Pecan trees do not put out nuts consistently, some years have a lot and some years have none at all. The flavor and sweetness also varies, so like wine there are particularly good years that are coveted more than others.
Man, your videos never disappoint. I will go a year without watching and then binge when I find one that "actually" interests me, then enjoy all of them. Such a wholesome and straightforward channel. Keep it up, my Alabama brethren.!
I'm honestly amazed the compression artifacts aren't worse. I wonder if shooting at 60fps helps. I've seen the compression algorithm get bogged down and start spitting out garbage over less.
I think it might be worse than The Slow Mo Guys shooting glitter. Maybe it's because we kinda know what falling leaves look like compared to a macro shot of glitter falling.
@@KingsOutdoorLife notice how the video looks like garbage when there's slow motion leaves falling? Having that much stuff on the screen causes the bitrate to go up. youtube limits it's bitrate pretty low, so if you come across a video that has a ton of stuff going on, it'll look like that. That's why you get a better video watching at a higher resolution even if your display doesn't support it, because the higher the video resolution, the higher the bitrate cap..... more or less. That's my understanding of it, and I'm sure there might be wrong terms, but I think it gets the gist across.

Thanks for the video! No matter the problem, there is always a genius chap that invents a trick, non-obvious machine to do it. These farming machines are amazing!
It's easier to think in the country. In the city people want you to act like a robot that tv god has told them how you should walk, talk, act, eat, sleep, believe etc. based on your skin color and accent. Despite what tv god says the racists are mostly in the city, not in the country. Competing for limited resources creates friction between people. The Earth is not overpopulated, just the cities are.
These machines destroy trees and thats the reason you pretty much hardly see them, they are very popular in America but hardly used anywhere else & when they are its a decision based on cost more then anything else
The great point at 4:43 - "moving from knowledge to understanding", that is, the difference between knowing something and actually understanding it fully. Maybe my fav video on this amazing channel!
Okay, the weight being "released" from the tree was something I knew happened in theory, but didnt really expect to see it so dramatically. Incredible.

The music, the text effects, the smile on not just your face but the pecan farmer's face! I feel like I went on a journey and share a special moment with you and your family's pecan trees. Your labor of love in making this video is apparent and has positively affected at least one person who's viewed it :] Oh man, and the entire exchange at the end! My nut harvesting system is with much less valuable species of nuts, absolutely no farm equipment or tools, and I still feel very content when I'm doing it and when I'm done. Especially my first year I'll fully admit: Not only was there no money in it, but I was working at literal prison labor type wages if you wanted to put it into money terms. But it's not always for money, sometimes it's for the outdoors, for the knowledge, for the future of preserving these trees and these skills. If anyone reading this doesn't have pecans where they live: See if you've got black walnuts, English walnuts, or any type of hickory nut.
That story about your dad and planting the pecan trees is a wholesome one. I bet he never thought he'd have such fond memories of being punished 50 years ago lol. And I'm sure every day when he walks out that front door and sees those trees he has fond memories of Daddy. Good stuff.
This should be one of the flagship clips of your channel. Let me say something about your dad and Frank: they are the kindest people I've seen. They are the ones who built your country!
I think the space was a bit too cramped for the phantom, and the dust and debris from the open cover (especially at such close range/with no space to put up a shield) are what prevented that, sadly
Now that I've seen a few, I actually really like this "Physics/engineering of farm equipment". It's cool to see how much clever design and fine-tuning goes into processes like these.

Dustin "I bet you're pretty good with a 22" the farmer looks down and smiles knowing indeed he is good

@@DarrensGeneralInfo im trying to find out who asked

The resemblance gets stronger year after year that I keep following this channel.
His smile when you asked if he was a good shot, priceless!
6:30 That’s some good pecan shakin’ music.
In California we do this with olive trees. We throw tarps under the tree before shaking.
This is wholesome.
I've never felt guilt for lazily watching any of Destin or Mark Rober's videos, because every time I learn something.
Destin: shoots amazing slo mo of leaves and pecans falling
TH-cam: hold my lossy compression
his fault if he uploads in 60fps instead of 24 or 30fps
Bumping up the quality to 4k helps a lot, even on 1080p screens. Unlock that bitrate!
It would be awesome if he sold a blu-ray of his best videos so we could watch them without compression. Either that or host them on a separate website.
@@NateLeePhillips or a Google Drive Link in the Video description, even if it only were the slow mo clips, it would be so cool to see that

really likable guy
So sweet
I am blessed to have a neighbor who is super nice just like him. Our friendship has endured even though he is on the complete opposite political spectrum from me.
16:13 Just imagine if everyone, every business, worked for the satisfaction they get from their job/craft instead of just for earning money. The world would be so different!
The world would be some much happier!
And how do I pay my bills with satisfaction?
Not everyone is going to like their work, people have different values and priorities. Otherwise things would be boring.
Yes the world would be different..... There would be more people living in poverty. This world is a rat race sadly. Better to find a career path that can support your interests than make your interest your career for little money.
Yep

"96 was a good year for pecans" Was not a sentence I ever expected to hear.
When you're as old as the pecans Destin just ate (●__●)
Pecan trees do not put out nuts consistently, some years have a lot and some years have none at all. The flavor and sweetness also varies, so like wine there are particularly good years that are coveted more than others.
@@ipissed my black walnut trees on my property produced absolutely no walnuts this year. They produced roughly 19 quadrillion last year lol.
It was though.
It was also the year that the internet really started to truly take off among the public.
This was fun. I have a pecan tree in my front yard and it's quite a pain to collect and crack them. It's fun seeing how automation makes lives easier!
When do we see a collab with 8-bit and Smarter Every Day?
Automation only fixes short-term pain while planting seeds for long-term misery and suffering.

I don’t understand what y’all are talking about but I would like to. Please explain.

Incredible.
The farmer loves his job! Every question asked and every compliment was received with a wonderful smile.
What a cool dude.
If this had been uploaded by just about anyone else, I don't think I'd have watched it. But I'm only 7 minutes in and filled with awe, I feel like a kid again learning about some new, important aspect of life. I can't wipe this grin off my face!
Seriously, Destin! The music, the text effects, the smile on not just your face but the pecan farmer's face! I feel like I went on a journey and share a special moment with you and your family's pecan trees. Your labor of love in making this video is apparent and has positively affected at least one person who's viewed it :]
Oh man, and the entire exchange at the end! Read my mind on the pronunciation AND made me laugh! If I had ANY feedback on this, it'd be that your Dad needed more screen time haha!
These videos are just so inspiring and intimate. You teach something while you introduce people like Frank who does farming simply because he loves it.
“ PTO “ is a power take off , which transfers the power of the tractor engine to an accessory like the tree shaker or a big lawnmower.
Well that's cool
Yep! On big trucks with hydraulics (think trash trucks, dump trucks, etc) the PTO is usually directly coupled to the hydraulic pump that runs those things!
Also can be very dangerous if not fitted with safety parts

Looking at that smile of the farmer he seems to be so happy in his life.
He looks so happy and passionate about his pecans, i wish him success for the future!
This is my favorite SmarterEveryDay video ever! By far! The family story, the slow footage, the music - perfect.
Upvote for Dustin to take the high-speed back and help tune up the pecan cracker with super-slowmo!

That story about your dad and planting the pecan trees is a wholesome one. I bet he never thought he'd have such fond memories of being punished 50 years ago lol. And I'm sure every day when he walks out that front door and sees those trees he has fond memories of Daddy. Good stuff.

True I'm a bit sad :(
I think the space was a bit too cramped for the phantom, and the dust and debris from the open cover (especially at such close range/with no space to put up a shield) are what prevented that, sadly
