Regarding Dan landing on his DJ, one of the tricks we use when riding rigid bikes is we land on our back tire first! It gives a bit of suspension and prevents the abrupt force from vibrating through your body! That’s why bmx and DJ’ers will land tail first!
@@TheRideAbides I still do it with my freeride bike if I feel like I may be landing flat! It’s definitely nice to have in your “arsenal” of landing methods. It’s really good for hardtail
23:47 now that is a hard buck! For 2025 my goals are to buy a steel hard tail and learn fly on mt. Penn like Sage & Logan. Good stuff fellas! I think I need to move to Arizona after watching this 😂👍👍🇺🇸
Yo! Hardtail or not, we need to get a Ride and Laugh jump session on Skyline at Mt Penn. That place is just so much damn fun! As for AZ, I have only been there once and it was amazing. Looking forward to getting back there at some point (hopefully soon). Sage
I'd say those crashes look worse on camera... but they were actually worse in person! LOL!! Unlocking Skyline jumps in 2025 is a great goal! Anything is possible & you're unlimited!! Keep us posted on your jump journey! - Dan
I got a Ride and Laugh podcast on Christmas morning! As I age and it takes longer for injuries to heal, fear is different. It’s not a fear of crashing or even getting injured, it’s that small injuries take so long to heal and I hate the idea of not being able to ride or play hockey for long periods of time…I say this as I’m getting close to riding again after blowing up a shoulder playing hockey several weeks ago.
Relatable...old guy here, waiting for a hamstring to heal. Miserable since March '24, might be riding again by March '25. The old connective tissue isn't what it used to be, be careful with it.
Merry Christmas Pat! Yeah, I can understand that line of thinking and it makes total sense. I hate when I get forced off my bike due to an injury and age is def making it a lot harder these days. Sage
Happy holidays Pat!! Injuries def suck more when they knock us out of multiple sports! I injure easier than I used to but I've always been a quick healer. Hope you're back on the bike (and the ice) ASAP!! - Dan
@@stanmustard7292 Heal up Stan! Have you tried a small 'red light therapy' unit? We've had surprisingly good results with those. TENS machines are another inexpensive way to promote blood flow & healing. Of course, I'm not a Dr. so ask them 1st! - Dan
I raced BMX as a kid for a few years. Then I rode MTB in the mid 90s until my bike got stolen. After that I got into traditional high school sports like baseball and football and went on to play college baseball. I finally replaced my stolen mountain bike in 2020. I'm loving it so much. I'm 50 now and still feel like a kid again every time I get to ride. This podcast is a HUGE reason I enjoy riding. The MTB community is amazing.
Ah, the BMX background explains why you are so comfortable and talented on the bike Jeff. Also, thank you for the kind words. We enjoy making these podcasts, and are so glad it is resonating with the MTB community. Let's take this thing to the next level together. Sage
I can't believe you just got back into MTBing in 2020!!! You're awesome on the bike!! Racing BMX and having an athletic background has a ton to do with that though. Very cool! And thank you for the compliment on the pod!! Listeners like you are the exact reason we record each week! Appreciate you Jeff!! - Dan
Now that I'm older, I wish I had a moto background instead of a trials background. All the former moto people are so fast! Learning how to be comfortable at speed wasn't easy for me but it seems natural to moto people. I'm afraid to try a riding a dirt bike now, I think I would explode if I wrecked one. Trials is low risk / high reward, which is ideal if you're crash adverse!
Those moto folks def know how to send it and look so comfortable in the air and at speed. For me, I love the slow speed tech lines so I would still lean toward trials. Thanks for the feedback and comment Andrew! Sage
These are excellent points! I just rode with a lady who has a moto background and she was amazing (talking about it next week!) but I also rode with a guy who had a trials background and he was doing awesome things on the trail too! It seems any background in gnarly two wheel experience is useful. Too bad all did as a kid was casually ride around the neighborhood. LOL! - Dan
Cut my teeth on dirt bikes...long ago. Started at 12 years old, in the days of Maicos, Husqvarnas, Bultacos, Hodakas, and Roger DeCoster. I'm sure not many here have ever even heard any of those words before. Lol. Road bicycling, after that, as MTB wasn't even a thing yet, and motorcycling was too much trouble, logistically. Also did some skiing and snowboarding, something that definitely has has a beneficial effect on my riding abilities. Cross training is a good thing. Tried out mountain biking in '89, never looked back, enjoy it more than most anything else. It's my thing.
Love that Stan! That is quite the background and excellent foundation for mountain biking. Do you still keep up with any of those other activities or is MTBing the only thing you do now? BTW, Happy Holidays. Sage
@RideLaughPodcast Almost exclusively mtb nowadays, but I'm road riding on an e bike right now till my leg heals. (hamstring). I'll go skiing or dirt biking with family occasionally, but not something I do alone. Thinking of borrowing one of my brother's dirt bikes and riding a local desert race next season. Might be fun.
Wow Stan!! What a cool ride history you have!! I love that after all that... mtbing is what you settled on and mtbing is still here for you! Ride & Laugh my friend!! - Dan
I think my moto background has been essential in my adulthood transition to MTBing. Moto provides the skills in the air, the comfort with speed (and airtime), and the ability to control the bike in a way that comes natural. I raced moto from ages 4-17 and then picked up MTBing in my 30s--the fundamentals that moto laid translated excellently to MTBs, but I sure do miss the throttle on the climbs. 😅
Well that explains your comfort in the air and your "go get'em" attitude on challenges. Dan and I were so impressed with your confidence on the trails that day at BMBP. Thanks for all the support over the past year Terry. Sage
@@TheRideAbides I wish! No room for dirtbikes in a South Philly row home lol. I get to ride with my pops every once in a while when I'm back home in Texas though, which is nice!
I can confirm the American Classic tires. I have been running the enduro casing Basanite and Tectonite for all of my riding for the past year and a half. No complaints and no issues. Great tires for my personal use.
Bam! Thanks Mark. I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one enjoying these tires. Hope you are having a wonderful holiday break with your family. Sage
Fantastic! I may need to give them another try. Traction is everything but out here in the desert it's even more pronounced b/c everything is so dang loose!! - Dan
I was always a bmx/moto kid when I was younger but I wish I coulda gotten into trials. Love me the most gnarly tech I can ride feel like it woulda helped a lot in that aspect (where I dab sometimes lol), plus it’s always insane to watch somebody like Brian or Jeff do it in person! happy new year and merry Xmas to you both!!!!
Happy holidays Dylan!! I hope all's well in your world! BMX/moto is a cool and useful background for sure!! Trials is a special skillset and it def translates to mtbing really well. Something I'd love to learn! 2025!! :) - Dan
