Shark fins are one of those odd jumps we don’t see ENOUGH! They’re all built differently and require a unique adjustment to your riding style. That’s what’s so catchy about them! The one at ceres will be unique in its own way and I hope to (see it) finish soon! But I’d love to see you do a “how to” once you become comfortable enough with riding them as well!
Any tips on what works for you Nik. I just feel extremely awkward on them right now. Sage
Maybe they're all different!!? I wonder if there's a 'best practices' way to hit these though so the bike doesn't go sideways. OR do we embrace the unintentional the shark-fin whip!?! We'll figure this out!! - Dan
I would say preload and pop like you're doing a "pump track on its side".
Right on Jeff, I will give that a shot. Thank you. Sage
This is a perfect R&L answer!! 😂 Thanks Jeff!! - Dan
To clarify, it's the lower middle middle upper boner tooter section that you are describing.
Thanks for the shout out but to clarify the paper towel comment, I leave the paper towel in the bladder while it hangs in my garage for a day or two then remove and that seems to work for me
Ah! Ok, that is what I assumed but thank you for the clarification. Sage
Coil is 100% the way to go for park. I’m a bigger guy 230lbs and I finally don’t bottom out consistently. Much more linear in the suspension progression. As far as the braking bumps go, it’s less about suspension and more about speed. The bike is going to rattle regardless. I’m 170mm 170mm and I ride at creek every week. It doesn’t matter my hands are still rattled to hell and back lol Having a park bike is a must tbh. My personal preference is long travel enduro bike for park 180-170mm. Something you can bring on a shuttle ride day and now for my trail stuff an e-bike that’s 160-150mm. As someone who rides creek tech once a week, having a park bike is a must.
Fantastic feedback and advice Dennis, thank you! I would love a long travel enduro style bike too, seems like it would be very versatile. Sage
Thank you for the kind words, Danny. I had such a good time with you. On that particular day at Phoenix felt white park.
Stick you are a natural on those lippy jump, so impressive. Sage
@@stephenstoccardo1636 Who's the Boss?! You're the Boss!! 🤣
Obligatory algorithm boost comment.
Lol! Thanks Jeff. Sage
@@jeffjacksonmtb "Thank you!" - Algorithm
Regarding braking bumps and affects on suspension: high speed compression tuning would help “dampen” the braking bump ruts. More travel won’t exactly make a noticeable difference, the fine tuneing with the high speed compression and damping balance would make the difference. Buuuut, that also means you’d have to tune everydownhill ride. My hot take: appreciate the bumps as an obstacle! Use them to master dicey berms and make it its own challenge! The right mindset will turn any wall into a rock climbing wall!
SPOT ON! Resistance is another form of negativity... the braking bumps are there 'FOR US!' Master braking bumps. Good stuff Nik! - Dan
Love it! Thanks for the awesome feedback Nik! Sage
The middle of the lower upper part
No, you got it wrong Josh. Its the middle of the upper middle lower part ;) Sage

Thanks for the kind words Vinnie! Good to know our humor is appreciated (by some! LOL!)! - Dan
Fear is all too real, unfortunately. It's insanely hard to hit the ground, spend all that time off the bike, and tell yourself you should go do that again. However, I feel like every time you get back to a point where you feel like you can do it again, you're coming back 10x more ready for it. Like Sage was saying though, positivity really breeds success. I like to picture myself clearing the jumps and finding landings, never thinking, "hmm what happens if I case that gap?" while still keeping it rational. Shark fins are fun! just like any wall/berm, you'll have a strong side and a weaker side, main thing is eyes up to your landing and trust me, an opposite bar turn helps straighten your bike out in the air!
Love that Zane and I totally agree. Regarding shark fins, that makes total sense. I'm gonna try adding a bar turn to see if that helps. Thanks for the feedback and comment. Sage
Truth! Hitting the ground is a bummer... but coming back 10x more ready is a good consolation prize! Getting stronger & more confident! Positive thinking makes a huge difference. As far as the shark fin opposite bar turn... put it on my list of 'need to work on'! LOL! - Dan
I do my most sketchy riding when I'm alone on Mt Penn, I wear an Apple Watch so my wife checks to make sure I'm still moving when I'm up there...we were just doing some trail maintenance with BAMBA this weekend and she would ask "do you ride this trail" and shake her head when I would say yes, so I have much less "fear" when I'm alone because I only have to concern myself with the trail.
Oh that's interesting Pat. And kudos to you for continuing to push your limits solo. I've heard of that watch feature and I think that is a good way to give your loved ones some extra reassurance. Sage
My wife tracks my solo rides on my Wahoo as well. Especially if I'm out in the middle of nowhere... she'll call if she sees me stop moving! Technology is awesome sometimes! - Dan

It really is brotha! I need some Zane coaching to reach that next level of steaz! Skyline train is calling. Sage
Let me know if you use the D ring replacement! It's not as sturdy as the D-ring but for a well fitting helmet, I think it'll do the trick! - Dan
I've ridden motorcycles for 40 years so a double D ring is completely natural to me, even with gloves on. It's an NHRA mandate so I got really used to it and it actually took me some time to get used to the plastic clips on an MTB helmet. Sage, I play ice hockey and all my 50+ year old goaltender buddies all swear by yoga, I do my hockey stretching routine before riding MTB.

0:47 Uswe is made by Hydrapak, it just got Uswe branding, same with Osprey, and several others. I like this system as it's easy to open, close and empty and fill, less likely to make a mess, no fighting a tight lid. You slide the top part off then fold it up to fill or empty and to close just fold it back and slide the thing over The bladders last few years, quite good, but of course eventually things wear out, they eventually turn sand colour. I also wear out mine, it leaks so had to retire it. But can't complain, I've used it for several years. Back to the bladder cleaning. I make sure to rinse out soap and turn the bladder inside out. And put it to dry. Even wipe it with a microfiber towel to aid drying.
I like that inside out technique, good stuff Johannes! Thank you for the comment and feedback brotha. Sage
Oh... that's really interesting! I was wondering if there was a connection between Hydrapak, Osprey USWE and some of these others. The bladders do seem really similar! I like the design more than the camelbak for the reasons you stated. Very easy to air out & dry. Also easy to fill and seal. Appreciate the feedback & comment! - Dan
@@TheRideAbides I don't know, but I bought Osprey spare parts which said made by Hydrapak. But I ordered wrong type of mouth piece, so returned it. But I have a box of the correct type, the longer ones, it doesn't have ''made by Hydrapak'' on it. But probably is. I've also seen bladders branded as Evoc.
@@TheRideAbides They probably just make it for the back pack brands, as it's an established bladder maker. No point in making a different bladder if Hydrapak basically makes the perfect solution. So it's likely most brands use them. But knowing that the spare parts are sold under several names is good to know, so makes it easier to buy. But parts being sold under different names is not making it easier. But searching for the correct word combo you will eventually find it, but knowing the names, Osprey, Evoc, USWE, Hydrapak will help. There might be others.
Great trail riding in todays podcast. Im always safety first and you talk about how you dont want to get hurt again. Ive been motocrossing and motorcycling my whole life. FYI helmets do come off.

I've tried a few hydration bladders through the years. Never had to worry about mold, because not one of them was used for more than one ride. Water just tastes nasty out of them to me, no matter what. And I've tried all the tricks, blow the tube clear before drinking, lemon juice, freezing, etc. Stainless bottles in my hip pack, and a Fidlock on my frame, for me. No sucking liquid out of my hose.
Gotta do what works for you Stan. Sucking on hoses isn't for everyone ;) Sage
I think you're probably right Stan! Water from a plastic container is kinda nasty... but it's the best we can do! If you find the right hydration bladder... maybe a different plastic that has less taste, let us know! My USWE bladder seems to work pretty well but I can also ignore the taste pretty easily. It's a talent! LOL! - Dan

MTB is an extreme sport. Lots of stoke and adrenaline! Clapping is celebrated with more “tame” sports. Organized crowds, seated viewers, when you share high stakes adrenaline with other riders, you resort to full body celebration! Fist bumps, high jumps, and wickeeeed celebrations 🤙🏼🤙🏼

To add to your MTB tip, throw in a paper towel with your cup which helps as an absorbing material so water doesn't stay in the hydration bladder. I've been doing this for years except without the cup. I will definitely be adding the cup in the future!

Great comment as always! Apparently people don't realize how heavy a tall/lanky body can be! LOL! - Dan
Sorry for correcting you, but coming from a motor trade background "Clapped Out is usually reference to a tired old car,so you are right to a point, but it's maybe a general term not so specific,I am a UK viewer and grown up with that saying and over sixty,it must be a general term crossing over.no right or wrong when you guys make it as entertaining as you do, Keep it up
Right on, thanks for clarifying it Rohan. I'm not the most knowledgeable guy when it comes to MTB terms, in fact I'm usually late to the party, lol. Thanks for watching and commenting brotha. Sage
That's super interesting Rohan! A lot of mtb terms come from other activities. I'd be curious to know where "clapped out" originated and what it actually refers to! - Dan
I don’t listen to pod casts but when I do it’s ride and laugh!! Love it guys you always have me cracking up the fact that Sage never heard the term clapped out blew my mind away !! I was in tears laughing Sage mountain bikers don’t clap! You should not be riding your trail bike at the park get another bike for that it totally destroys your bike . I ride a patrol 170 170 and I’m thinking about going even less travel don’t need it if all you ride are jumps!! And Down hill 200mm MTB bikes don’t smooth out break bumps I can tell you that!! Maybe someone who knows how to tune suspension will tell you different. Keep working on em jumps kids!! Remember preload and pop not stay centered I never heard that one😂 love it guys thanks for keeping me stocked and laughing when I’m not riding
Good stuff Sean! We always love hearing from you. Sounds like I should pick up an old beater bike for park days... maybe a DJ... that would be fun. I hope we get to ride together soon. I've seen a few skinnies you been working on that caught my eye ;) Sage
Thanks for the awesome comment Sean!! Great stuff. I would LOVE a park specific bike. I hope we ride enough bike parks to justify that! N+1!! And we'll keep working on jumps... it's so fun!! - Dan
Great technical advice on jumping with the video. Very helpfull. Looks like a fun trail wish i was there.
Thanks Erin! Yeah, Ceres is a wonderful place for progression. Thanks for watching and commenting. Sage
Thanks Erin! Ceres is a unique and fun spot for sure!! - Dan
Fine.... Steve wins... 🤣🙌
You were amazing Brian! And thank you for the lead on Any Style. Lunch is on me the next time we are out. Sage
@@brian_on_a_bike 🤣
You're a massive winner and mtb hero in our book Brian!! Appreciate you!! - Dan
@TheRideAbides really Brian is king, no one has more flannel! Lol
That was a great day on bikes.. even though I had to climb lol
lol!!! Thanks for leading us through Steve. We owe you a beer for all those climbs ;) Sage
So much fun!! We appreciate you Steve! Trails at Ceres are so cool!! #AnyStyle! - Dan
Love this!! I’m the worst as a solo rider. I get so much negative in my head. I’m gonna start going into a feature with a better mental attitude.
Right on Johnnie! The mental game and attitude are just as important as skill IMO. Now when are you coming up to PA so we can ride together? Sage
Yes dude! It's so mental. You're a good rider. Believe it, unlock the skills you ALREADY have and flow through those sketchy Florida wooden features with confidence & ease! :) - Dan
Having done a particular new trails, cleared rolls and chunk and actually knowing what the roll outs and slabs are like aides in being able to harness the adrenaline and not be mastered by it which leads to not relaxing a bit or having the confidence needed to ride at my best
Good stuff brotha! Confidence is everything when doing big things. Thank you so much for the feedback and comment. Sage
@@RideLaughPodcast Ya, great vids! I will add following a buddy is also a huge confidence builder especially when you don't know the roll out or line. Lastly regarding the topic of fear, I've been rock climbing for 30 years and we say 'some fear keeps you alive and is rational and other fear debilitates you and is irrational'. Confront that kind of fear riding by maybe walking the line or stopping with your more skilled buddy and watching him ride it. Then go for it!!!!
@@cragginshred Yes!!! I love that.
@@cragginshred Fantastic perspective on fear!! Rational vs. Irrational. I find this stuff so interesting! We don't want fear but rational fear is important too! Thanks for watching and commenting!! - Dan
Good stuff, thanks! We ride nothing but chunk and steep rolls. This year I have ridden many long steep features and have been too far back for sure. Never thought about no traction in front wheel or losing steering ect
Right on. Where do you ride? Sage
Now day's alot of trail have been neutered of rock and roots etc because ppl don't want progression But there are a small portion of ppl like me and Ill admit I am 56 Years old and there is no better feeling then banging out a 30 to 50 foot gap jump. Or hitting a massive step up or step down and there should be more jumps and drops in trails are bikes now days are so much better. But if you don't want to hit a gap make an alt line with maybe a smaller table top and they can put wood in the gap. I mean we are not riding road but there are alot of ppl that want the trials to be like riding on the road. I am sorry but this is MTB'ing and it should be rough and challenging.
I totally agree Weasel, there needs to be more options for all levels, not features that are all level friendly. Challenges are something we can all aspire to get over and conquer. Thank you for the feedback and comment. Sage
Your approach makes perfect sense to me! The best trail systems have double black features with ride-arounds or even better, an easier but similar feature! And KUDOS to you for sending it at 56!!! We're in our upper 40's and I don't think we're slowing down either! Thank you for watching and for the thoughtful comment! - Dan
Coming from a dirt jump background, the airtime becomes the thing you seek with mountain bikes. It’s a completely different body position, angle, etc. and I will absolutely agree repetition helps learn this new skill! Getting a hardtail or DJ and taking on trail systems kitting for jumps is the best way to “jump” into this new discipline!
Yes!!! I'm super excited for this new development in our progression. Thank you for the encouragement, advice, and tips. Sage
I'm envious of your dj background! I do like jumping my hardtail but I'm still not comfortable in the air....YET!! It's definitely happening! Appreciate the tips & thanks for commenting! Great stuff! - Dan
@@TheRideAbides so happy to see you guys ride ceres! There’s some maintenance that needs to be done, but would love to get a ride in out there with you guys, I’m suuuure there will be more features to ride too ;)
The Toot Toot has wheels!
Sage was right, Tempest used to be a Black. I think the beginning of last season they changed it to blue.
Lol yes!!!!
Right on Vinny. I thought so. Thanks for confirming. Sage
@@vinvec5805 Ah ha! That's what we thought. I guess Tempest is a black with the optional features & Anthem drop but you could really roll the whole thing too. Creek is just so much fun!! Great meeting you Vinny! Thanks for commenting! - Dan
58:11 The Three Amigos saved the village of Santa Poco because the villagers knew how to sew. Great tip of the week! I have saved a lot of money by repairing gloves and pads.
Right?!?! Gear is too expensive these days. And with the stuff we ride, sewing is paramount, lol. Thanks for commenting Jeff! Sage
One of my favorite movies!! "The people of Santa Poco can conquer their own personal El Guapo, who also happens to be 'the actual' El Guapo!" Thanks for listening, commenting and supporting the pod Jeff!! - Dan
