      I love you videos but the first crusades were not the start of the religious war. In fact there were many jihads marched on Christian land before the crusade.I only pointed out because he said that he say it’s where the start of a long struggle and countless death when the struggle had already been started.

      Echo Christians persecuted Arabs, North Africans, Persians, and Levantines far before Islam emerged. One clan was persecuted in such a degree that they finally submitted as vassal states, they were known as Ghassanids. Islam unified all persecuted regions under an empire and made an uprising possible. Even the Jews in Jerusalem sided with the Muslims against the Byzantine Christians and were front-row soldiers during the liberation of Jerusalem from Roman control, which banned Jews from entering holy sites for around 500 years, only to be allowed to enter again by the Muslims. Most of the Canaanites of Jerusalem then submitted to Islam, and many Jews did submit to Islam.

      Fivology your talking about military expansion and a time before Islam was around so I do not see your point.I’m talking about religious wars.holy wars were being waged by the Islamic faith long before the first crusade and I only said something because the video here portrayed the first crusade as the start a religious conflict when in fact it had been going on for a while.

    Between the Huns, Seljuks, and Mongols, and others I’m sure, it’s interesting that the whole “central Asian steppe nomads create giant empire through cavalry and mounted archery before quickly falling apart” is a story told on repeat for like a thousand years.

      Ironic given the fact it grossly misrepresents the Christian side. Really, muslims invade Egypt, Syria, North Africa, Spain, Jerusalem and Anatolia, but the Crusades were just meant to stop Europeans from fighting each others?? it's really simple. Christianity had already suffered incredible losses and was under constant muslim aggression. Something needed to be done.

      @@HistoryTime ...By presenting the Crusades as some sort of gratuitous aggression when it's clear to anyone who knows how islam had spread so far (neverending invasions) that they were a response to muslim aggression? poor job.

      The Muslim Leaders would only attacked if the Christian States would abuse and kill Muslims in their lands. Or killed the messengers spreading the word of Islam. Just shows how bad these Kings were in their time given the Muslims took over lots of their lands for it. You can call it freedom of speech, which is excepted in free countries today.

    Excellent work! Perfectly presents the chaotic situation the Seljuks found themselves in as Crusades began. If there's one thing I would've added, it's more rough sketches of maps that represent the ever changing situation in the region throughout your narrative. Otherwise, absolutely enjoyable watch!

    The story of the collapse that occurred after the death of Malik Shah is one of those great dynastic struggles that belongs in the same category as the fall of the Mongol Empire, the Plantagenets and Capetians, the Wars of the Roses or the Song of Ice and Fire. It's utterly epic in scope and filled with amazing personalities. The descendants of these people filled all of Persia, Syria and even Byzantium. It was an epic family.

Killing Orthodox Christians and Muslims all at the same time it was like killing two birds with one stone. Well played Pope.. so the blood will forever be on their hands as the resentments between the people still exists to this day and conflicts created due to the divisions created by the invasion.

    The Seljuk Turks dynasty are from one of the 24 Oghuz Tribes that called ‘KINIK’ tribe. They used his Turkic language for family, people and military. But used farsi as official state language. The Turks today in Turkey are completly moved to anatolia and the west after battle of Malazgirt by the great Turkic Sultan Alp Arslan in 1071. In 1277 Karamanoglu Mehmed Bey is known as a devotee of the Turkish language. During his brief term as a vizier, he issued a firman (13 may 1277):
    From now on nobody in the palace, in the divan, council and on walks speak no language other than Turkic language.

    This is truly one of the best historical channels on TH-cam. I can't comprehend why it doesn't have at least 100K subscribers. You put so much work into this. Not everyone likes long videos, but for me, it's a sign of proffesionalism. You go in depth with every topic you discuss. I like it.
    Anyway, Muslim history seems so interesting! Whole infighting, various warlords, Turkic nomads/barbarian "invaders". Fascinating. It's so sad it isn't widely known in the mainstream. Yeah, it's the same mainstream that focuses mostly on English-French history, with some Italian history in between. But what about Danish or German medieval history, then? It's soo underrepresented, sadly.
    The only things people know about the Medieval Middle East, if anything, is the Islamic Golden Age and the Crusades. That's it. Even then, events like the crusades are either presented without the necessary context or blatantly used as a political propaganda.
    Hell, even your series about Scandinavian history manages to suprise me. My favourite historical period is Early Middle Ages, and even I know about most important events and peoples, I always learn something new.
    There was something I've read (heard?) about the history of the Caliphate. Someone said that's basically Roman history on steroids. When it took Rome centuries to become an empire, it took decades to Arabs to do the same. Then, just few centuries later, Barbarian Migrations happen to them. But where Rome had Germanic auxiliaries, who eventually managed to carve out the pieces of the empire and found their own, "barbarian" kingdoms, in case of Arabs it were the Turks. Hell, the descendants of Romans, Italians, remained divided and were essentially under "Germanic" domination until 19 century - by Austrians and French in this case, while Arabs remained under Turkish rule until the WW1.

    @Kappa Maybe some interesting additions for this list would be translations of some names. In modern and old Turkish nearly every name has a meaning. Although Turks heavily influenced by Persian and Arabic lifestyle most of the families continued to name their children with Turkish (Turkic) and some nicknames from the traditions stuck to the people.
    The name of Aq Sunqur actually is Ak Sungur and it means White Hawk.
    The title Atabeg is actually is Ata Bey which means Ancestor Big Brother.
    Another one is Muhammet Tapar. Tapar means believer or who worships. This probably means that this person believes in Hz. Muhammed.
    Atsiz Ibn Uwaq al-Khwarizmi is an interesting name. Atsiz in modern Turkish written as Atsız or Adsız and it means "without a name". This is interesting because naming is a Turkic pagan (Kamist) tradition. The step life was harsh and child death was common so Turkic people don't give their children a proper name until he does a noticeable deed. This guy couldn't get his name or maybe he is rejected to get a Kamist name because he was a decent Muslim.
    The Ata Bey of Mosul Kerbogha (Gürboğa) actually means Mighty Bull.
    The actual name of Berkiyaruq is Muzaffer Rükneddin Berkyaruk bin Melikşah and Berkyaruk means Light of Lightning.

  • @TheMounthood
    @TheMounthood 6 ปีที่แล้ว +21

    Not sure if this was mentioned, but Seljuks were the first "settled" Turkic state. Until they came into picture, Turks had been nomadic people. Seljuks learned statehood from Sassanids and Umayyads. With good leaders successively, they established a state. Ottomans built on this state tradition of the Seljuks. So, they are the successors of the western Turkic empire, just like modern day Turkey is to the Ottomans.

    • @babaeren62
      @babaeren62 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      TheMounthood!!! No!! first "settled" Turkic state; UYGHUR EMPİRE. Turks did not take any state heritage from anywhere!!Turks protect their own state organizations! only they just tried to adapt to the peoples in the geography. Situated order has not changed much.Multinational empires set up on this.

    • @TheMounthood
      @TheMounthood 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Yes, Uyghurs were the first settled Turkic speaking state, but, we are talking about Near East/Asia Minor. And, Seljuks were by far the most established state Turks ever had. Karahan and Uygur are not good examples to compare to the Seljuks. Why do you think that taking "state heritage from others" is a bad thing? Before Talas War of 750, Turks were nomadic. They continued to be nomadic but slowly got integrated into Umayyads as soldier slaves because Umayyads did not want any Arab factions gaining too much power and overthrowing them. So, they subcontracted protection services to the Turks. It was a win-win for both sides. As Turks gained more power and influence, they revolted and established their own states. So, of course, they have adopted the state notion of the states they lived in. These things don't happen immediately, but takes several generations. There is nothing wrong. History works that way any way. And, why do you have bunch of !!!!s after your sentences. :)}} You need to calm down, buddy. There are so many other things to worry about in life. Take care.

      "Why do you think that taking "state heritage from others" is a bad thing? Before Talas War of 750, Turks were nomadic."
      wrong, the first Turkic State was Göktürks (542-745). with the official name of "Kök Türük Budun" (𐰚𐰇𐰚 𐱅𐰇𐰼𐰇𐰚 𐰉𐰆𐰑𐰆𐰣) "Budun" means the nation. if you have a capital, if you collect taxes, if you keep a written record, it is a state. nomadic organization is a kind of State.

    Excellent work. Rome knew exactly when to strike. I think you overlooked the fact that Malik Shah was assassinated by Rome's Shia puppet order of assassins. They had strong ties to Rome's private army the knights templar. She went back to her old empire playbook having established naval control of the Mediterranean through Venice who made gold over fist for the logistics of the first crusade. The fatamids were in the pockets of Venice. Those assassins did the leg work in the Islamic world. They were wiped clean by the Mongols in late 13th century. At this point the Latin kingdoms were in alliance with the Shia fatamids against the mongols.

      `They were wiped clean by the Mongols in late 13th century. At this point the Latin kingdoms were in alliance with the Shia fatamids against the mongols.`
      No fatimid did not exist in this period, being suplanted by saladin ayyubid dynasty-soon- mamluk sultanate.

      @croationz 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Eissa Sinéad my mistake, had the names mixed up but it was the Muslim power based in Egypt. The Latin kingdoms allowed freedom of travel and other supportive measures to help against the Mongol invasions. Mamluks were slave soldiers, and were an acceptable replacement to a unified ayyubid sultanate in the eyes of the West.

    • @croationz
      @croationz 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Eissa Sinéad it doesn't matter anyway, the pope and his templars had issues at home with Philip the 4th. Whatever the crusaders/Rome discovered through their excavations in the holy land along with their conquest of Constantinople during the 4th crusade, they abandoned their time tested plan of divide and conquer that worked under the old Roman empire and shifted all their resources to the reconquista in Spain, witch was a power base for the templars and Roman loyalists even after Philip destroyed the popes warrior monks. Something made them turn their attention to the West. In the east they were in a long tactical retreat, from acre to Cyprus, to rhodes, to Malta. In the West they began heavy probing along the West African coast and even into the Americas. By the time Genoa approached queen Isabella to fund a trip to the new world, she was shocked at how much detail They had on the new world and remarked "it sounds like you've already been there". They couldn't dislodge the Muslims from the riches of Egypt and it's trade to India so they looked for a way to bypass them. Those knights who held their ground at Malta are today known as the knights of Malta. Allen Dulles who was a knight of Malta founded the CIA. Rome's agents are everywhere, even Donald Trump was trained by Romes Jesuit order At Fordam.

    Supporting comment.
    BTW, think of ways to prompt people to add comments and/or create discussions. Videos that 'go viral' usually have lots of comments associated. I know Hank Green (SciShow and others) has been making a noticeable effort to get comments going on his channels after going for years without any acknowledgement of comments whatsoever. I think Cody's Lab is probably the best example I'm aware of. The dude gets 5 digit+ comments volume on most uploads. You'd be hard pressed to find someone else maximizing the same kind of audience with off the cuff style content quality.

    happy to see that more and more docus like that are appearing. in school we never heard of turcs. this great "nation" had so much influence in asian AND european history. they rivaled china in the past. during the middle age they attacked byzantine empire and created several of the most powerful "states" in history... happy to see they those people get discovered by youtube historians... waiting for this for about 10 years now. and finally i found some good videos...
