    I adore Penny Dreadful! I was so sad when it ended after 3 seasons. One of the best Victorian gothic/horror shows ever made imo. I think it's extremely DA bc most of the characters are from classic literature, and it explores themes pertaining to that literature.

    How To Get Away With Murder deserves to be on this list

  • @CueTay5
    @CueTay5 ปีที่แล้ว +44

    I feel Pretty Little Liars fits as well? Close group of friends, often at school, lots of murder and secrets. The school, town and families seem to be very rich so they have some "old money" vibes. Can be visually dark and the characters can get pretty obsessive/passionate.
    I wonder if anyone else thought of this show while watching this video

      @athomewithamanda ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Absolutely! I was actually surprised not to see this listed, but then to see others that weren’t actually set in a school. I feel like the main box that needs to be checked for dark academia is the ACADEMIA part!! Haha and SO much of PLL took place in their schools! Not to mention the general very dark videography, the murder, the lies, the secrets, the old money aesthetic that Spencer’s family has etc. this would have been close to the top of my list!! Good thinking!

    I highly recommend the TNT original series, The Librarians. It was about a group of people recruited to recover mystic artifacts for an ancient library. The franchise started with three made-for-tv movies that had a strong Indiana Jones feel, followed by four seasons of the series, which is where the dark academia feel really became noticeable.

      YES It is my absolute comfort show. Also they have recently announced that there will be a spin off called "The Librarians: The next chapter" so they might try out some new things in terms of aesthetics

      I live close to Oxford so its setting is so familiar. The show goes inside all the beautiful colleges and many of the villains and Morse’s friends are dons or masters of the colleges. You get choristers, art, obsessive infighting and of course, crosswords. I love how the modern world encroaches on the Oxford fantasy via Morse, who straddles both worlds. Also John Thaw is an acting force of nature.

    I would add "The Eclipse" from Thailand to the list. It's set at a boarding school, it got a murder Mystery in it, a curse, a special club of that school (a bit of gay romance as well)

    I don't like horror, and I definitely don't watch horror, but I love Penny Dreadful! It's dark and a bit scary, but not horror, even though the characters are the classic horror characters from Gothic literature - Dr Frankenstein and his monster, Dracula, Dorian Gray etc. And that's how it earns its Dark Academia stamp, because it's DA in the same way those classical Gothic horror books are DA. Maybe not set in an academical setting, but they are the books that the academic students would read, I imagine! So yes - Penny Dreadful absolutely qualify as DA, I think, and even if you don't like horror, give it a try - it's not that scary, and it's absolutely beautiful, and it's so good!

      Completely agree! I was soo sad when they ended the show after just 3 seasons 😢. Everything (costumes, set design, acting, script, cinematography, themes) about this show was phenomenal and I've yet to find any other similar type shows that even come close.

    This was a great list! I love that you included Gilmore Girls. Definitely on the lighter side but the old money and academia aesthetics are perfect!
    Also definitely would include Pretty Little Liars. Heavily set in their school, murder, dark, lies, secrets, friend group, old money etc it’s spot on, I enjoyed most of that show, and I’m looking forward to checking out these others, I haven’t seen many, so I’m looking forward to it!
    Thanks so much! Great video!

    Hannibal (series): Hannibals office (primarly featured in Seasons 1&2) is wonderful airy and distinguished in its athmosphere.
    Star Trek: Picard S02 E01/E02. Not the best season of this series in terms of Star Trek Lore, but the decor and furniture of Jean-Luc Picard's Living Room/Library/Study in the Chateau Picard is exquisite dark academia.
    The fall of the house of usher: the usher family mansion and roderick usher office is insanely stylish dark academia.
    Do I need to mention "The Crown" or "Succession"? Filthy rich people living in luxurious palaces.

  • @TheOriginalDalamanza

    If you're even slightly into the DA aesthetic then go straight for ITV's Lewis/Endeavour/Morse!
    It's detectives solving murders in oxford, generally on cases that have a connection to the university, and with mysteries that centre on things like poetry, music, crosswords etc (there's literally an Endeavour episode where the killer stages his murders like opera deaths). All done with a very tongue-in-cheek 'Oxford, am i right?' attitude
    Endeavour's the most DA as it's a bit darker and also has a period setting. Lewis is very cosy (though these days you have to squint past Laurence Fox a bit). Personally Morse is a bit slow for me, but it's a classic nontheless 📚

    I would add 'Porthouse Blue'. It is an English tv show, from the book by Tom Sharpe of the same name. The plot is about a very traditional Oxford university from the late 1980's. The plot has the government sending in a progressive master and his wife to modernise the university. The porter and the professors work to undermine this programme. It has dark humour.

      @@thoughtengine “half arsed” is an opinion. I didn’t read the Archie comics, so I didn’t need to compare it- and I don’t really think it’s fair to compare anyway- a live-action adaptation of a cartoon on a paper, is never going to be exactly the same, nor should it be- because it’s consumed in a completely different way with different senses involved …
      That all being said…. My comment was simply pointing out the fact that it fits the list of requirements traits set by people who enjoy Dark Academia. Not, if people like it as much as a comic book or not- 🤍
