I am a retired truck driver in the United States one time that I can remember going out across route 116 in Illinois the only way that was able to stay on that hwy was to use the power poles on either side of the hwy to stay on that hwy because it was all covered over with snow and no snow plows were out at that hour in the A.M!
Here in Vancouver we forget what the rest of Canada lives with in the winter. As soon as our rains head east and climb up the mountains, in winter, it snows. And it’s very heavy, slimy, wet stuff. The Coke is our supply line from the rest of the country. Hats off and much respect to the drivers who make this run! She’s a doozy😳
I used to take overnight Greyhound Kamloops-Vancouver & Vernon-Vancouver for work & one night I woke and the Greyhound was slowly moving in snow and weaving because big rigs were parked for the night in various lanes. I think that was The Smasher. Greyhound stopped & the driver got out and handed a parcel into a truck cab. That's like premier parcel service like that Amazon Prime.
This used to be the route of the Canadian Pacific railway's coquihalla subdivision. Bad weather was a frequent problem, and the line was closed often throughout the winter. It was eventually abandoned in 1959, I think. When the BC government decided to build a highway over the route in the 1980's, a few eyebrows were raised.
that hwy was started in the early 70's . Should have had the technology to tunnel bore back then, none of this economic set back would be necessary. oh well,
I lost a few friends driving on that weather! I almost died a couple times in Colorado mountains! Now I’m just a local driver no more crazy weather I was on the l80 when that huge semi crash happened it was pretty fucked up!!
I have gone up and down that hill in a rig too many times to remember, except a few stand out. What does is you never underestimate that 8% grade, she grabs ya, and your away till your in the shed. Sitting up top in Zopkios I know why he considered crawling in the bunk, anyone who isn't apprehensive before that hill in those conditions, is just brain dead.
It seems more like a 10 + % especially the first half before the snowshed. Just my guesstimaton based on having pulled a load down Hwy 99 from Cache Creek to Whistler, and a load up Heckman Pass west of Williams Lake on Hwy 20. There you have some 10, 11's and I think as high as 15%.
@@TractorTrailerWorld Moron.. that hill is 20 kilometers long.. and heading south it is fucking steep.. and the snow-shed is the only good point to grab traction.. watch some more videos of heading past the Great Bear Snow-shed... going north.. it kills all sorts of vehicles... just from over-heating.. not just semi's have issues.
I don't drive a rig. But I see the issue. High density wet snow is the worst even for cars. It's driving on a slurrpy/slush. The tires can't compress the snow and get a traction bite. Liquid ice. Chains help. I saw the uphill side had been,,,treated first.I think the downhill should be treated first. If you slide going up hill, any slip-n-slide accident gravity helps to stop. Downhill slip-n-slide accident gravity does not help. It would be worse.
Trying to keep the highway clear and passable often relies on timing and luck. The plow operators try their best to time when they ought to be out there either pushing snow, laying down material, or both. If they’re heading uphill when the weather hits, it only makes sense to carry on uphill, and either get turned around when possible or radio their team to let them know the condition of the down bound (south) lanes. It’s easy to criticize the road crews, but tough to do their job.
Ok... you got stuck in the pull-off chain-up area.. That explains a bunch. SMH.. Instead of filming water on the windshield... you could have maybe thrown a set of chains on..
Just a few Questions: Does your company make drive in this? What's the slowest you'll drive in this in kms? For the area how long would it take for the storm to end and plows to clear the road?
Nice ride TTW. Thanks for taking me along for the Snowy 🚛 ride. 🐞🎧👀🗻🥂. Thanks for the post
I wouldn't even drive a car in this one of weather. Those truck drivers have grapefruit for balls. God bless you guys- respect!!

Can’t tell you how many times i’ve seen this view...
I have to be honest, I have never seen a semi stuck in a parking spot due to snow. Crazy!
It's better to be safe than sorry . To arrive late is better than not arriving at all ...
I have never seen this much snow before. Well not here in the south
what about putting drag chains on the trailer tires.... trailers wont slide. it u chain up at all? heavy new, wet snow is slick at snot.
The Fraser Canyon is the original
hwy thur hell and is again every time they close the Coqahalla.
Stay safe out there

I still don't believe it's 8%,lol! The shed maybe!!

It used to be 14%. Then it became 12%. Magically last year it became just 8%. Government bullshit.

I drive the canyon just about every day I’d much rather drive this highway instead, lots of drivers in to much of a hurry
At 22:25., is that one of Al Quiring's green heavy recovery rigs pulling someone up the Smasher?
Jim Baritone the one and only
Franco Kok-Can't reply to your comment, probably a google+ issue.
Probably went down in 3rd gear maybe 16-18 kph.
I’m pooping my pants at home just watching ......

What's the truck speed limit goin down that hill?
Just a few Questions:
Does your company make drive in this?
What's the slowest you'll drive in this in kms?
For the area how long would it take for the storm to end and plows to clear the road?
not wise to drive with no visibility, i used to run the fraser canyon with quick as air trpt.
60 hrs vancouver to montreal vs vs.
Light pull on trolley valve can help straighten trl
More likely too start sliding.
Been there, done that. Have the ulcer to prove it.....
at what speed and gear u Smashed down the hill ?
Back up bout foot
Put in bout. 3rd 4th gear. Maybe keep from spinning
Try stay in fresh snow
What ! No bikers ? Whimps.
If only I could spell property
