    1. Tires (Get good quality tires)
    2. Brakes (Use engine brake to avoid wear on brakes)
    3. Engine (Learn what mayor components are on your engine and the sounds of it)
    4. Wires (Check wire connections during your daily pre-trip inspection)

    When it comes to diss alignment of your axles, you can prevent that by grazing your fifth wheel, avoid driving with your differentials turned on but alsoDog legging Trailers can contribute to the axle disalignment on your drives

    Good vid. Im a diesel mechanic and can remember all u needed was a starter and battery to make it run. Now its insane the amount of unnecessary stuff on these new trucks. I watched the trucks go from basic and simple to impossible to work on. Im 56 and i am giving up on it after 35yrs because of this.

There are many factors like degree of abuse, neglect of equipment or just stats to determine if its time to upgrade or hold on to that truck.

    i rarely use brakes. using the j brake is great advice. even when slowing down to exit the interstate, if no one is behind me i'll coast for a mile and if my speed hasn't dropped enough i'll engage in the engine brake. i'll use the pedal brake for coming to complete stops or tap it for maintaining speeds on downgrades while the j does most of the work
    over the years my main breakdown has been DEF related. in fact just had a 579 that put me in limp mode twice and constantly had a def light on that my company and peterbilt couldn't get rid of. was just shy of 500k miles so was to be expected but still.

    Just a point, I’ve been driving 46 years & have never had a brake failure while I’m operating the unit. Why? Because I do a comprehensive vehicle inspection before I start my trip & everyday after that until that trip is completed. That’s not to say I haven’t found something wrong before or during my trip. Mostly it’s someone else leaving me with a trailer needing repairs & either didn’t find it or didn’t report it! Pass the buck is a poor attitude! I’ve watched drivers, both owner ops & company drivers, get up in the morning open the curtains put it in gear & drive away having never once inspected their truck. Boy that’s safe!! Let’s get out there & do our jobs & keep everyone safe!!

    I’ve personally NEVER had ANY luck with recaps.. I tend to run the speed limit around 5mph over most of the time, on occasion I will run harder but typically decent speed!! But I hall fairly heavy typically around 500-5,000 over. But no matter if it’s truck, trailer, dump truck, straight truck, box trailer.. witching 10-15k miles I have a blow out or 2 with recaps!!! I won’t let my boss use recaps on my truck! I flat out told him tho our recaps on and someone else can drive it!! And as far as slack adjusters… they tend to not work very well at all running in and out of the quarries with the muck!! No matter if you wash off daily or weekly or monthly!!! I typically adjust my brakes about 1 time every 2 weeks. Because while they don’t work… they do adjust a little just not as tight as they should be! And I’ve had a turbo go without warning!! Just popped and flames shot out the stacks let people know shut your key off, leave it in gear and pull over in gear and stall it into or it can run away and blow your motor’.

    One big thing i have discovered when rebuilding Generators and Starters is VIBRATION. Everything has to be built and put together clean and tight. Always take time to work Good and Efficiently and stay Focused/ one mistake can cost hundreds/thousands + a Great deal of time; I love the one about rubbering wires on the frame. That is a GOOD one and have seen one battery cable exposed to the frame MELT 2 batteries and another EXPLODE! Praise God for plastic sandwich bags for insulation and Praise God again for starting a Cat 350H.P. on ONE BATTERY. NO JOKE. it just so happened i was parked over a small pool of dirty water that i used to COOL off all the Battery cables.

    Almost impossible to over inflate your tires. Most new tires is 120psi cold. Most compressors are set for 100 maybe 110psi.

      @braddock77 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Those 100psi air compressors are for personal vehicles, truck stop and truck/bus repair shops usually ran on 3-phase air compressors which can produce 150-175psi(needed to remove lug nuts)
