Jason Stilgebouer well I’m sorry, I can’t waste my money on some Chinese plastic $75+ earbuds. I won’t splurge a bunch of money on random stuff I see online because I know how to manage it. If you’re swimming in money, you can do that, and I will continue to wisely manage my money.
The cummins doesn't just pull 80,000 lbs. In Canada they pull 140,000 lbs on most long hauls and even more in Australia. One advantage of air bags that you missed is that they also give you a good estimate of your axle weight based on the air pressure in the bags. Super handy for trucks that don't have opportunity to get the load weighed before getting loaded (such as a gravel truck).
Thanks for your video. I drive a 2012 Freightliner Cascadia 10 speed with a Detroit motor. I'm pulling 40,000lb trailers all day long & this truck never gets tired.
Most of those “automatics” are really automated manuals. They operate the same as a manual only difference is they use air pressure to shift gears and it may not always be the gear you want to be in. Seems like they’re tuned more for fuel economy than performance. They still use clutches like a traditional manual vs a hydraulic torque converter in a normal automatic. Some single axles, school buses and smaller rigs with lower weight ratings do use a torque converter though, but torque converter automatics don’t hold up over time in commercial trucks in my experience. They began to show signs of wear well under 200,0000 miles, even in some buses.
the 18 speed auto in mine can be a bit retarded sometimes, but thats what manual mode is for, especially on hills, pulling a combines 105-110,000 pounds up some steep hills would be a bit harder in auto
My company has 3 Internationals that have 13 speed autos. I want to burn the damn trucks to the ground. I know I'm not gonna have a good day if my '12 Volvo with a 10 speed standard has to go into the shop. Since they want to be stingy, I wish they had gotten Freightliners instead of Internationals. I think they did an OK job with their automatics.
@Seb C only thing I can possible see them automate is driving/navigating highways. There's no way it's going to be 100% autonomous as it'll need input for various uncontrollable situations. It might need to hop a curb in a small city to avoid a light pole, might need to pull into oncoming traffic to make a very tight turn. Might not have optimal room to safely back up into narrow parking spaces. There's almost no skill needed for 60-70% of trucking in which you could use it but you need something more than a computer and AI for the the other 30-40%.
Cool vid mate 👍👍 I live in Western Australia and drive road trains for a living. We cart anything from 160 to 220 tons in quad road trains. That's 2 single trailers with an A & B trailer behind it which has 86 tyres, thats for a bogie drive otherwise it would be 90 tyres for a tri drive truck. The super quads which are 4 single trailers have 98 wheels. Many companies are now moving into the big super quads as they hwve a bigger payload at 220 tons. I've also drove quad power trains that have 2 x 750hp engines. One in the truck and one in the 2nd trailer. The power trains obviously don't go on public roads like the quad road train. From memory we used to cart about a 750 ton payload, that's 1.5 million lbs. These trucks are ruffley about 4 metres tall and about 75 meters in length with the tyres about 1.5 metres tall. Would love to post a few photo's here but unfortunately I can't.
10:07 I'm a youtuber and truck driver. I was waiting on him to get something wrong. My company change our oil every 50,000 miles. The transmission oil is changed every 500,000 miles.
Damn what engine do yall run? Company I work for changes every 15K miles(most of our trucks are gliders with Detroit 60 series, and a few Pete's with ISX's).
how on earth trucks transmisson oil lasts that long? i mean, it haul heavy things and the stresses on the gears, etc is high compared to normal daily car.
As a stick hauler I chuckled when you said “up to 80,000 pounds” I’ve hauled well over 100,000 pounds with an old 90’s model Pete powered by a C-12 that was turned wide ass open with over 1,500,000 miles on the original motor. I had the same motor this truck here has only difference was the one I had was deleted and tuned. I use to race cars at stop lights when I was empty all the time. Can’t beat a Cummins.
Is it me or did weights drop? I drove a tandem axle asphalt/ dump 20 years ago on a class B and if memory serves my max wt. was 45k....truck was 20k and I could haul 25k...crapped bricks one day when a load came out to 28k and we knew DOT was in the area
AZKTH-cam it finally started letting go right before me and my pops decided to get rid of it. It started gettting loads of oil in the coolant tank and then started running hot and losing oil pressure, it would run the same amount of oil pressure goin down the highway as a Cummins would idling. The dude we sold it too blew it up in like the first month or two. We gave that truck pure hell though and had been turnt wide open most it’s entire life.
3:34 when you hear that sound you know your fate is secured, like when she wraps her legs around your back, you know there’s no getting out of it at this point.
Not true when I was just starting out back in 2013 i had the lock on my 5th wheel get stuck half way so when I backed up to hook up I heard the lock sound I picked up the gear and pulled forward only to have the trailer land on the frame. After that I always do my tug test just to make sure it secure.
Anyone laughing about someone doing a visual has no business having a CDL. First thing to do when hooking or dropping, and last thing done on everything before you close your door. I get out of my seat all the time to check things, and prevented a lot of issues because of it. The more tired you are or the less you want to do it, the more important doing those checks becomes.
Lots of great information here! I’ve been trucking for 8 years now hauling cars and grew up around it my whole life. Trucking and semis are in my blood and I love em! So thank you for making this video
"In the olden days semis with manual transmissions used as many as 18 gears." LOL the truck I drive has an 18 speed and many of the trucks where I live are 18 speeds.
Yeah, because when you look at a semi, it doesn’t have a bed to put stuff in, so it’s half a truck. Semi-truck. When you look at a truck, it has a bed. So it’s a full truck, or pickup. a Pickup Truck. a truck for you to pick up things. *I mean it’s literally in the name*

Stop lingering and taking your sweet time! We mite need that left lane If someone's on the shoulder or if someone is getting on the highway. Which is why in 3 or more lanes roads, we avoid the right lane. Call it trucker fun facts, that may actually save your stupid life! Lol we truckers love you guys at donut man, for real!!!!
In my country the diesel pump handle is yellow instead. I believe diesel gives higher fuel economy as it's denser than petrol (each molecule has more carbon atoms) & thus have a higher energy content per unit volume. On the flip side I think diesel doesn't burn as completely as petrol and thus has dirtier emissions, contributing to the Dieselgate also

I drive a 579. It's a pretty comfortable ride. They have a cab stabilizing torsion bar that keeps the cab from rocking back and forth like a freightliner. My 579 is currently getting 7.4 mpg
As a trucker and avid donut guy for a few years now! I’m stoked to see this video come out! I have to admit though, I really hate the automated manuals. They are so friggin sluggish (at least my companies freightliners) I’ll gladly keep my 13 spd eaton. Especially running in the Canadian PNW Vancouver area.
8:45 you air up brakes to release so first U start the engine and wait for the compressor to build up pressure. U go nowhere without air. That's a safety feature from when air operated brakes were invented.
Yea, I caught him saying that but I was going to let it slide because I was too lazy to try to explain why it was wrong. so I am glad you said something.
@@PickupsAreNotTrucks I was taught to bleed my air tanks after every day, especially in the winter so that water doesn't build up in the tank and turn into ice.

I know this comment is a strong candidate for the "no shit, Sherlock" award, but that likely comes from the time truck tractors would normally only have four wheels.
It's actually a term derived from horse drawn carriages en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fifth-wheel_coupling#:~:text=The%20term%20fifth%20wheel%20comes,horizontal%20plane%2C%20to%20facilitate%20turning.&text=Fifth%20wheels%20were%20originally%20not%20a%20complete%20circle%20and%20were%20hand%20forged.
Its the official industry term coined over 100 years ago (Knox Martin patented the coupling btw) when most trucks were based on light car or van chassis and only had two axles (4 wheels) hence 5th wheel. Term never changed even in the late 20's when more than two axles were being fitted to goods vehicles and has remained the generic term ever since. Nerd moment over.
I know everyone craps all over volvos but my 2020 has 156,000 miles and I've only been in the shop 3 times. Watching this from my bunk right now waiting to get unloaded.
@@jasonirwin4631 he is right on a lot of it but I can't say yes or no on that specific trim package on that Pete. These trucks are so over customizable it's insane like you could get just about any engine and transmission made for trucks in just about any conventional truck in America, and don't get me started on all of the gadgets you can get in these.
Holy PACCAR sponsorship! Indirectly mentioned is that air ride maintains proper ride height at all times, regardless of the amount of weight. This has numerous benefits like maintaining driveline and suspension angle. For the industry, it is extremely useful and increases productivity because the majority of trucks are set to the same ride height, which allows the trailers to be dropped and picked up quickly and efficiently. Additionally, there are many industries where leaf springs are the superior choice even today with brand new equipment, typically severe service situations. Air ride is not new either, and has been around for decades, even my 30 year old truck has it, stock from the factory. Not every detail can be covered in a summary video, so that is what comments are for, heh.

No need to name call @Matt Sprayberry , just correct and move on lol. Besides, auto-manual transmissions are basically automatic transmissions but you still go thru the gears yourself
I’m a trucker and I’m impressed by the information given here. I learned a few things. Automatics suck. They aren’t nearly as good as a trucker shifting his own gears. Not even close. The one thing automatics are good for are local trucks. Driving in traffic in the cities. Over the road driving hundreds of miles a day on the Interstates. I wouldn’t trade a 10 speed with a splitter for an automatic.
well to be fair these "automatics" are probably actually "auto-manuals". Which honestly aren't too bad on their own, the adaptive cruise control is pretty nice as long as the radar doesn't see any "ghosts". I'm not sure how much experience you have with auto-mans but personally having used both that and a regular 10-speed I can respect the automated ones. Especially for engine braking, these new ones can and will engine brake you almost to a complete stop on their own, and at least with the 10-speeds I've used it usually cuts off engine braking around 30mph

Older “automatics” shift mechanically. Subjected to electronic faults
the 18 speed auto in mine can be a bit retarded sometimes, but thats what manual mode is for, especially on hills, pulling a combines 105-110,000 pounds up some steep hills would be a bit harder in auto
The Scania S450 I drive is automatic, and it has three modes of gear change. Eco, standard and power.
Ones built in the last 5 or 6 years DO give better fuel mileage tho. They got way way better
I love how this show has become science garage during quarantine. I love how this show has evolved.
Miss Science Garage.....
Truckers need more love
@Seb C Meh, the roads are crap and the AI can't predict stupid drivers. Driving will be the last thing to get automated.
Ok

Tomboy187 Did the C-12 ever get an overhaul?
I still do a visual inspection everytime I hook up. 😂😂😂😂. Get made fun of for it all the time. But oh well.
Almost. But you only know it's good ride when you tug on it and those legs stay wrapped.
@@danielhomant2832 yup. I do a double tug then visual check.

We never say "diesel" it's always fuel. Thanks for the shout out. Much appreciate it. 👍
In my country the diesel pump handle is yellow instead. I believe diesel gives higher fuel economy as it's denser than petrol (each molecule has more carbon atoms) & thus have a higher energy content per unit volume. On the flip side I think diesel doesn't burn as completely as petrol and thus has dirtier emissions, contributing to the Dieselgate also
Hmmm I say diesel and my family's been driving Rigs since the 1940s.
Yea, I was always being corrected by my instructors when I would say gas instead of fuel, after a while, I just enjoyed messing with them.

2:39 Calling it Fifth Wheel despite the semi already having 6 of them
I know this comment is a strong candidate for the "no shit, Sherlock" award, but that likely comes from the time truck tractors would normally only have four wheels.
Back then when the Fifth wheel got the name not many truck has more than 4 wheel.
It's actually a term derived from horse drawn carriages
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fifth-wheel_coupling#:~:text=The%20term%20fifth%20wheel%20comes,horizontal%20plane%2C%20to%20facilitate%20turning.&text=Fifth%20wheels%20were%20originally%20not%20a%20complete%20circle%20and%20were%20hand%20forged.
Technically, the truck on this video is a 3 axle, which it already has 10 wheels, not 6
