    I love Benny Greb on so many levels.... Not only is he an amazing master of performance on the instrument, but he really knows his stuff on the "nerd" level of equipment design (see his signature snares), cymbals, sticks, drum tuning (see his floor tom), kit setup, etc.... he's just really intelligent on all that stuff. On top of that, he's a great communicator and educator, very unassuming and engaging, very self-aware.... and last but not least he's funk oriented. Honestly how can anyone not love this guy?

    Vic firth is really the best. Their sticks have so much clarity and balance. And they listen to the people! Played 5b's all my life's and always needed the extra length. Once the extreme series came out, the search was finally over. There's a reason why the worlds best drummers use Vic ;)

    Im glad the quality control was mentioned, I bought a couple pairs of his promark signature sticks years ago and about 3/4 sticks were as crooked as could be, it was a kick in the nuts for the price they cost.

    These sticks are just perfect for my hands. I’ve been back and forth from this Benny greb sig and the Matt Garstka sig. the Benny’s are little thicker and heavier and I like that but wanted something in between a 5A and 5B and these are just perfectttt. The weight length and feel is exactly what I’ve always looked for but could never truely find. Also it’s unique with the green logo and letters. For practice I use the Danny Carey sticks which are just tree trunks compared to those other two lolll. But when I have a show I feel like these sticks are feathers after practicing in the Danny Carey’s and can blaze all night long.

    Looking forward to trying this stick. I loved his ProMark version, but I was continually frustrated by the lack of consistency in the taper from one pair to the next. I contacted ProMark about this, and they kindly sent me a free pair, but they didn't really have an explanation for the differences in taper consistency. I was left wondering if Benny had modified his stick in the times between my purchases of them. Possible, but I think it was really poor quality control. This is probably one reason why many artists are leaving ProMark for Vic Firth. Benny even hints at the lack of consistency in his old stick.

      SomedayHero I had this exact same problem with his Promark version, I loved the thickness and light weight of what I believe Benny wanted, I would order bricks of 12 pairs and 4-5 pairs would be twice as heavy, virtually unusable dead weights which frustrated me. I look forward to giving these a try :-)

      Yeah dude, promark kinda suck this days. The reason of their inconsistency is that they use blades to cut the shape of the drumsticks, instead of Vic, who grit's until the shape is done. This method (Vic Firth) is way more efficient and accurate. Vic all the way

      Promark one of the least consistent major brands.... my experience as well. I like the design of their Rebound Balance stuff, but yeah I've even noticed the tip shapes aren't always the same. Not to mention issues with pitch and weight balance.... You just never know what you're going to get with Promark. Incidently Eric Moore also recently ditched Promark for Zildjian / Vic Firth, and he too made his feelings known on this very subject. Too bad, really.

    Vic firth, Vater claims that taking the sticks down 6 to 8 percent, makes the stick too dry and weaker. That it works better and makes the stick stronger and have more rebound to keep the water level at 10 percent. Just wondering what your opinion on this is? Not trolling in anyway just want to hear your argument for why 6 to 8 percent is bette than 10 percent that Vater recommends. Thanks

    There certainly is an art to making the perfect stick with all the right details, but a drummer once told me, if you play the "Johnny Drumstick" signature model and you're on the road or can only find mom and pop music shops, the chances are you won't be able to find that signature model stick. It's great that VF can do all this but for us city cats grinding out the clubs a couple times a night a couple nights a week, I just don't think this stuff is worth it. I'd rather become comfortable with an ordinary pair. The drummer i mentioned earlier, his wife had a name for stuff like this, "Drummer Porn."

    • @sempertympanis4285
      @sempertympanis4285 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      S Gals Overnighting a pair doesn't work on gig day. But most importantly, I don't know any working musician that would pay the extra shipping cost for what you call the best sound. All the guys I know would take pride in making the best sound possible/ manipulating a stick into doing what you want it to do. A stick is a stick. I understand balance and taper and all those details are important factors in the sound, I agree with that and I can certainly hear and feel the difference, furthermore, I wouldn't taking drum corp sticks to a jazz gig, but there's so much marketing and corporate influence that goes into these things these days that it's moving further from art. Van Gogh didn't have a signature brush or endorsement and that mother fucker painted his ass off. My point is find a solid pair that aren't niche and make them your work horse sticks. They'll be reliable and easy to find. Don't buy into the "perfect pair" propaganda. Be an artist not a consumer.

    • @crimsun7186
      @crimsun7186 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a good point. This is one of the reasons I'm yet to try ProMark or Vater sticks. I can't find them anywhere but online, and they're usually more expensive than Vic Firth's. Ideally, you should have multiple stick models that will work for you. You won't usually have a hard time with that unless you play percussion and have to lug around 8 different pairs for various purposes. A good idea is always to buy a box of sticks or...correct your technique and use the right tool, so you stop breaking your sticks so often.

    yey! welcome to Vic Firth, Benny! I'm so happy you finally changed. I had about 3 pairs of Promark sticks years back. One consistent problem: bowing. Each and every stick! I hesitated to try Vic Firth because it was too pricey. But when I bought my first pair, it felt like a big gulp of water after days of walking in the dessert! I never had to look for other sticks. I absolutely love VF! :)

    Hey vic firth !!! I in the last few years I literally have spent a few hundred dollars trying to find the perfect stick ! I have tried vaders pro marks and many others i have to say your sticks are miles above the rest !! I finnally landed on the buddy rich signatures they have such a incredible fell !! I do however have a complaint i like the wood version but the tips break immediately and with that shape it has no tip anymore !!since i have changed to the nylons and they are much more durable !! My number one complaint is the white paint !! I like to keep my kit clean and when you play i have white paint chips all over my kit on the drum rims on the pedals by the floor and it marks cymbals !! How does this relate !! Benny plz do not make your sticks all green it looks cool but it is messy fir the ocd drummers !! Anyways love your sticks vic firth but man would it be cool if those buddys only had paint half way up the stick !! Not on the playing surface !! Thanks guys keep up the good work ! Im a vic guy for life regardless !!

    While they look nice, they're a bit too similar to the Gregg Bisonette signature sticks, only slightly thicker, medium taper and the tip is a bit more elongated.

    • @CameronBartholomew
      @CameronBartholomew 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gregg Bisonette signature is significantly thicker (0.62") and 1/4 longer. Also different tip. It's not even close to the same.

    I love pro mark for feel. But their quality control is shit! Every pair feels different everyone knows Vic firth are the best in the industry for reliability, unfortunately I feel like their sticks don't work well for drum set, never have. Not bad for concert band/ orchestras. But the sticks don't flow like primary on the drum set. Need a company with the consistency of Vic Firth and the feel of pro mark, please? With that being said I still play pro mark lol.

      @jimkowalczyk7466 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      insanedrummer89 I felt the same way till i started paying attention to actual stats on a stick and what it does. The thickness, taper, length, even the wood. You can search with these various filters on vic firths website, and thats how I found the perfect pair for my style (keith carlock signature model).
      I wouldnt call it quits with their extremely wide range of sticks specifically for drum set.

    • @dkeller20m
      @dkeller20m 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ironically i felt the opposite when i used promark. vic is pitch paired, but weights are different. so when one breaks its hard to find a second pair. this was a few years ago and this problem hasn't been a problem in a while, but it used to annoy me. one dense, the other light.
      but vic life span, and wide variety is why i re-picked them up. their concert and marching made me realize why theire drum set is just perfect.
      what sticks are you currently using?

      DrummerBoy_2212 Yeah, Vater is very underrated. I use the Sweet Ride sticks and they hold up very well as compared to Balbex, Pro-Mark or VF 5A's.

      deadboy600 that is where you are wrong sir. Have you ever had the epiphanal moment of finding the perfect pair of sticks for YOU? I have, and it is one less thing I have to think about with my playing, and it allows me to push the limits of my technique and sound. It m

    • @jwebby85
      @jwebby85 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      deadboy600 That is the dumbest, most asinine thing I've read today. I tell you what. How about you try playing with a pair of sticks where one is lighter than the other, and they're both bowed like a banana, and then come and tell us "it's not the stick it's the player". To an extent you're right. But having a pair of sticks in your hands that aren't weight matched, that aren't straight, and just plain lousy makes for a miserable night at the gig. If you can play with any stick no matter what, good for you. But I bet your technique sucks. There is a real science behind stick making.

      sorry shootsbraw. you attacked me personally here (which is your right and probably your purpose )
      thats fine - but i still wanna respect your point
      so here are my thoughts in case you are interested:
      first understand that we are not talking about the NBA or Major League Baseball here.
      it was not about the money. sometimes it is just what it is.
      regarding the switch to vic firth let me tell you that you are simply wrong.
      accually if you look at my career you won´t find any decision that was done purely for the money. in fact a comment like yours is frustrating to me because i always make decisions in line with my values and integrity and usually against money.
      i understand that ppl like you become sceptical in todays world and i feel you there 100% . but let me tell you that you may have picked the wrong target here.
      i challenge you to try the stick out and honestly tell me that its not a superior stick.
      anyway i wish you all the best.
      hopefully we can discuss this face to face someday.
      Benny
      p.s. oh and yes i think vicfirth are a better company to be associated with...and the green was special because vicfirth never changed their whole print to another color before (except white and black) thats what i meant

    • @shootsbraw
      @shootsbraw 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      First of all kudos for addressing comments in TH-cam in such a forward and honest way. Guess I really pissed you off. I actually have your old stick...and I'll be sure to test the new VF model...which I imagine is better... , which was exactly my point. But based on your response I would assess that it might have been a bit direct or might seem insensitive or one might say offensive. I still believe my point is valid, because hek, who doesn't think they're right. My point was that sometimes people are so caught up in their image of not taking advantage of their hard work or success that they, in this case you try to make a move to a preferable company seem almost uncomfortable, so people won't judge this move as a lack of loyalty or opportunism. Why do you have to justify to anyone such a valid and obvious move... Moving to VF is a prize, a blessing, a token of hard work. Don't sugar coat it (as I see it). You have a wonderful way with words... (really! )... But if I was involved in the process of your move to VF, or any other move for that matter... The promo would have been... "Benny's new stick... Now with VF.... Fuk yeah!"...Addressing the specific fact they made it green sounds like you're apologizing. And you obviously know you have nothing To apologize for... Fuk them all from big to small.... And hopefully we will meet some day. Play some drums and maybe you can take a shot at kicking my ass for calling you out on a social video uploading platform (aka youtube). Cheers... And again, I appreciate your directness.
