World Rugby Rankings (2003-2019)

- Both Men's and Women's World Rugby Rankings are calculated using a 'Points Exchange' system, in which sides take points off each other based on the match result. Whatever one side gains, the other loses.
The exchanges are based on the match result, the relative strength of each team, and the margin of victory, and there is an allowance for home advantage.
Points exchanges are doubled during the World Cup Finals to recognise the unique importance of this event, but all other full international matches are treated the same, to be as fair as possible to countries playing a different mix of friendly and competitive matches across the world.
Any match that is not a full international between two member countries does not count at all.
All member countries have a rating, typically between 0 and 100. The top side in the world will normally have a rating above 90.
An example of how a points exchange is calculated is shown further down this page.

You could tell the era when McCaw, Reid,Nonu,Kaino,C Smith,Dan Carter ,B Smith,Mealamu, Woodcock, B Frank's class of 2011 & 2015 were playing- the brown bar didn't even flinch while the other countries were fighting over 2nd-9th placings..a era in NZ probably never to be repeated but never say never. 🏉
Respect for argentina, the only hispanic country in the top
Not to be petty but Ireland were number 1 after the world cup warm ups and were actually still at the top spot going into the 2019 tournament. Great how that one turned out for us.
New Zealand, South Africa and Australia have truly been dominating those top 3 spots over the years
Not anymore lol
South Africa is no. 1 and New Zealand is at no. 2…. 🤡
@@ruan6244 they both just lost
@@ruan6244 Ireland will destroy them in 2023
@@47eoghan47 you maybe wanted to say france ?
Awesome to see Japan in the top 10
Sbows how dominant NZ were for a long time. I laugh when a team beats NZ, then the fans acting like they're now best in the world. Consistency brings greatness, not one off wins...
The past couple of weekends might have taken the smile of your face though, eh? 😉
@@typhoontim125 been smiling for 100+ years. Sometimes it's nice to rest the face and give back to those who have been frowning for years 😉
@@jamesdouglas7021 Well seems like most times ye meet Ireland lately your smile gets plenty of rest 😉
@@davidalexander4259 Well I learn something new every day..Andy Farrell is a New Zealander..
@@typhoontim125 111 years of smiling against Ireland... Def need a rest. I'll just replay the world cup QF when I think of Ireland 😉. It looks like Ireland are enjoying Lowe, Aki and Gibson-Park as well...
Great to see SH teams dominating through the years. But AB always talking consistency. The AB have been no 1 for long periods but consistently SA has been dethroning them. Just shows you the powerhouses the SH hold. All of sudden NH have this bravado cause they rarely beat SH teams. But next year, revenge is coming.
Southern hemisphere so dominant lol
Haven't been so from last week lol
@@mag9604 ,a couple of weeks means nothing consistency and world cups do
@@mag9604 that's dumb af 😂
@@Trajan2401 World cups in a way yes but that doesn't affect how good the team is now does it? As the blacks aren't being very consistent at the moment are they.
@@nocturnalrainbows6167A bit like your name.
Wish Springboks could get politics out of team selection. Just way too much nonsense behind the scenes in the boardroom between power grabs and greed between the franchises influencing national selection and whatnot.
Just look at all the rot coming home to roost past 5-10 years in WP, EP and others.
With Rassie its at least felt like even though grinds us fans, there is an actual rugby, even if flawed, reason for the likes of Willie Le Roux getting picked (hopefully that stops now), but jeez, have the Boks suffered for some atrocious team selection and coaches over the years.
The boks win trophies inspite if Saru and SA rugby leadership, definitely not thanks to it.
Okay so as a South African I thought Japan were like sub top 10 when they beat us but they were a top team. I'm actually glad they beat us that fateful day in Brighton because that sparked something in Japan. A Japanese Rugby Renaissance. Love Japan ❤️.
They are so shit now haha
@@danielferguson8304 They're not shit. Just good. They're a good team. Not brilliant.
Vamos a ser sinceros la mejor selección de rugby de toda la historia son los all blacks⚫️
If u think about it New Zealand have never gone into a world cup ranked lower than 2nd so in theory they should have reached every world cup final so they actually under preform in world cups only have 3 world cups and being the favorite to win almost everytime
I wouldn't get too cocky like the Aussies saying to the All Blacks four more years and they haven't beaten them very often since than. So I'd just say watch this space cause it's coming and it's just around the corner.
I kinda wish there wasn't this exclusivity of tier 1 nations playing among themselves and let other nations play them like what happened between USA vs New Zealand like that they have a chance to grow.
so happy my country, NZ came in 1st sometimes
Yes, no1 for colon cancer also.
Most times lol
@@Trajan2401 Hahaha the long haired troll strikes again. Thought the last 2 losses might have silenced you for longer. Certainly did on the other thread we were debating on haha.

@@breebw why you so bitter?
Spot the Allister coetzee era
Bruh it's VISIBLE
Super shit when the video suggestions show up before the video even ends... Couldn't even see the last few years.
Correct Me if I'm wrong but weren't ireland no.1 for a couple of months in 2018????
Yep, this is incorrect
Its not incorrect, but Ireland and then Wales didnt maintain that rank for an entire month.
Looking at this, as an Aussie, it always felt like we were in way worse shape than the big picture rankings show here. Maybe it's due to the high standards of Australian Rugby League that Australian Rugby Union is expected to replicate. Then again, i've never taken the world rankings too seriously anyway.
Its because Aussie has played a very dominant (most dominant prominent team sports - not just rugby- team ever?) NZ 500 times each year across the last decade and a half.
@@anotherstormer think the US basketball team would have something to say about that but I get your point
Around the late 90s early 2000s before the rankings were introduced Wallabies were number 1.
@@SB-uo9to ,but they probably have over a million basketball players lol
International rugby league is a joke mate and I love rugby league can't compare it wallabies are an awesome side just so happens there are more good teams in the world
excelente trabajo. podrian actualizar al 2023
Respect for All the nations who play Rugby
such a shame to see Australia go so low on the rankings. We've been used to being 2nd behind New Zealand.
This Kiwi wishes the Wallabies were always there, angrily chasing the AB’s along, ceaselessly tormenting them and therefore making them better. Of course, I don’t want them to be number one ahead of the AB’s, no matter how much I like my Australian cousins. Although..... thinking about it, if the AB’s dropped right down the rankings, I would be stoked to see the Wallabies hold the premier position while The Blackness fought their way back.
Mate SA have always been better than Australia don't talk nonsense
I miss the days when Aus was as tough to face as NZ, but you guys gave us (SA) two hidings quite recently, and despite the bad Northern hemisphere's Autumn series I reckon you guys are on the way upwards again. World rugby is better when Aus is strong, hope you guys are back to being a powerhouse in the next world cup.
Whats with links to other videos popping up on top of the video before the vid ends obstructing the video
And guess who's on top in 2021...since 2019...
Can't count 2020 and in 2021 SA lost 5 tests compared to NZs 3 so much for rankings
@@Trajan2401 mate you really making yourself look stupid. As I said in a previous response you got smashed 2 out of your last 2 games and we lost one of our 3 by a single point. Also we played you guys twice and won a game each by a 3 point margin. Stop being a delusional fan.
@@Trajan2401 bi lions test do not effect rankings... So its 4 losses on Rwc rankings not 5. If you count bi lions series boks would be further ahead this year by the way.
This would be even greater if it had national colours
Exactly what I was thinking
Even dominate top spots despite Rugby league being so strong in Australia and New Zealand
Australia and NZ literally have the same flag, they should both change their flags
Different colour stars
Count the stars... NZ has 4
@@EarlJohn61 they DO have the same flag tho
@@EarlJohn61 yeah alright, you can copy my homework... But make sure you change some of it, okay? 😂
@@symeremeyers4148 ok...
I'll admit that there are certain similarities...
But if you count the stars and go past 4 it's probably Australian. (I'm assuming that you can count to 4.)
Also (being colour blind I don't usually pay this much attention) if you see red stars they belong to NZ. 🇳🇿
If you see white stars: Australian!🇭🇲
Where is Georgia? :DD
I blinked and missed the all blacks losing top spot. Not bad for a tiny country who not only misses out on a lot of sponsorship and funding but respect. You can't be this successful unless you are the bar. Great to see Australia dominate as well. Not bad for a bunch of convicts who also get no respect.
Australia and NZ dominate most team sports they play they're both great sporting nations.
@@Trajan2401 please Australia havnt been great in rugby for many years. They only slightly lifting their game now f
And I can't see it being a consistent change.
Get no respect?
From who?
You're allowed to scream and shout at the opposing team without any rebuttal before a game.
As far as AU's is concerned, again who gives them no respect? What evidence do you have of this?
@@prudeuncle well they beat SA twice so it shows if they play to their potential they're pretty good they were also in the 2015 RWC final
@@Trajan2401 they really don't but are great sporting nations...well AU's is anyway.
Ireland where no1 ...all be it a very short time ^^
And still haven’t won a Quarter Final match lol
🇦🇷
all blacks should be anonymously greatest international team in history
Anonymously?
they are. Its the best team in the world across all the sports i think
Your a funny man
Nope, an American basketball team, I forget which but they are even better....
end of 2015 to 2018 were real bad for South Africa...damn politicians
What does politics have to do with this
@Jean Tredoux I am in mzansi... They never said many black they said every race must be represented equally, including south African coloureds, Asians... Etc.... It doesn't make sense to for rugby, cricket to be dominated by whites only.... We need equal representation of every south African race
Allister cotzee was appointet because he was black and he was never fully in control of his team, he had a board who voted who should play and how they should play example playing Elton instead of Handré
I don't give a crap what colour you are, as long as you win, that's all what the fans want.
Saffas have an excuse for evedything
You would of thought after two decades of 6N rugby Italy would slowly be emerging as a much more powerful team than they are...infact since about 2015 they've been regressing ?
i wouldn't say they're getting worse i think the other teams have just gotten better. france are out of their slump, scotland have slowly been getting good for a few years, england are always good and ireland and wales are much better teams now than they were back then. Italy will get better in time thyere just behind the pack.
@@teocarre4026 been saying that for years mow
@@benobrien2030 yeah but it's hard to catch up to teams who are improving faster than you can catch up
@@benobrien2030 true but lets not forget it took france 50 years to win their first 5 nations and ireland went the better part of 70 years without winning anything, i do think that italy should have to play a relegation playoff with the championship winners though.
@@teocarre4026 I'm not suggesting Italy should be in a position now to challenge for 6N title, but they should definitely be far more competitive. Their under 20 teams regularly beat likes of Wales and Scotland...but they just cant seem to make that transition to the full senior side at moment.
still number 1 in 2021
After losing 5 tests lol
@@Trajan2401 Hahaha yea okay troll. Let's talk about our last 3 games each as your only as good as you last performance. Out of our last 3 we only lost one game by a single point yetyou guys got smashed twice. Pipe down!

Best team in the world is...?

Kinda pointless statistical experience as from March 2018 the info at the top of the rankings list gets unceremoniously covered up by promotional stuff for other videos. Promotional Ambition kills the very point of the video.
The new Zealanders are going through a form slump, but there's too much talent. AB's will rise again.
Mate, you lost 2 games.
Hardly a cause to mourn.
Just shows you NZ never has bad calls against them. Rather for them.

Ist scrum illegal binding SA penalty NZ
2nd scrum illegal binding SA penalty NZ
3rd scrum illegal binding SA penalty NZ
4th agree should be a penalty to SA
5th SA scrum dominated however NZ got the ball out before collapsing/breaking apart
6th SA scrum dominated however NZ got the ball out before collapsing/breaking apart
7th penalty was rightly given
1st SA Knock-on, it was a knock-on
2nd SA Knock-on, it was a knock-on
1st NZ Knock-on, it was a knock-on, should've been called
1st SA side entry, I'd argue that no ruck was formed and the all blacks players should have been penalised.
2nd side entry, not sure how to ref this one. He came in from the side but was facing the player when he moved him. penalty SA?
3rd agree penalty SA
1st ruck SBW not rolling away penalty SA
2nd ruck tackler not releasing penalty NZ
Foul play calls against Moody. seriously? nothing in it mate
Read off the ball. yes. penalty.
Summary:
Out of the 20 incidents the uploader cherry-picked 6 probably should have been penalties to SA, However, 4 should have been penalties to NZ.
Also, one NZ knock-on should have been called.
Considering he went out of his way to paint a certain picture id have to say he failed.
The uploader didnt included calls that went against NZ and even without these it's only a 7-4 ledger.
Conclusion:
No bias was found.
@@Me-ex7qg Richie McCaw: offside, in at the side, hands in the ruck...his whole career
