Is it really necessary to launch a new update every year? After Android 12 nothing's changed much. All those changes are just minor adjustments and Google present this every year as a brand new update. They can go with the Windows' direction. Add features or changes to the existing version and release a major update after 3-4 years when necessary.

Is it just me or am I no longer excited to get android version upgrades? Every year they remove something that made android, android. First headphone jack, then SD cards, then it was IR blasters, after that it was being locked out of the "Android" folder on internal storage, then the android storage framework started blocking access to the root of the internal storage and now you can't use FTP to copy files over and instead have to use slow MTP that fails half the time. The Apple-ification of android is really bugging me. There are very little good alternatives in the NA market :(

While I get your sentiment... Android still has support for headphone jacks and SD cards.
In fact, there are new devices coming out with those features present. It's just up to the manufacturer of the hardware, not Android, to decide if it is present or not.

Dude...There seems to be a small title problem with Android Police videos.
They often make no sense aka they are typical clickbait.
Case in point: The "Android 16 situation" is NOT bigger than you think.
Actually nobody was thinking about it because there is no situation to speak of.
Most haven't got 15 and/or 14 yet and 16 is many months away. Years away for many.
Hence, unless you are a developer or a hardcore recent Pixel user, this video is quite irrelevant.

As others said, it's a promise of 7 years of Android updates. So even if there's suddenly 14 Android versions in the next 7 years you'll get all of it.
Thing is, you'll lose out of other features as a promise of 7 years of Android update meant something else was taken away.

Google recently upgraded the kernel version of the 6 series to the level of current 9 series. Maybe this has opened the opportunity to upgrade pixel 6 series to A16. And by looking at this, we just might get A17 in 2026. Being a 6A user, im delighted to hear this news. Although the updates over the years seem very incremental on the surface level, even though numerous upgrades and fixes are being done under the hood. Android 14 and 15 felt like 13.1 and 13.2.

I wouldn't mind if we started to skip major SW versions and just have regular updates with incremental features (like how Google does with Chrome) and maybe one big leap in every 5 or so years (like with the major Windows versions). The bulk of features already comes from the specific phone manufacturers and they step up their versions how they see it fit (like One UI 6.1 as a recent example).

It's time for Microsoft to enter the smartphone industry back again with some new and Major tweaks/features:-
Integration of googles services to reach vast consumers.
Then Work on their Microsoft Store .. To compete with google play.
Like Apple Microsoft should have to work on its ecosystem to flourish..
Integration of cross play (Windows.. Xbox.. And Smartphones) ..
Integration of native Windows Emulation to run software and games.
And Or Port the Games.. ( We want to play old titles in smartphones using gamepad(or in screen controls)..
We came long way in screen quality in phones..

Curved back edges are good. They don't don't look as good as more square edges, but much more comfortable. Not that it really matters, that's getting covered up by the case that 90% of people will put their phone in and 100% of people probably should put their phone in. Curved glass is absolutely terrible though, unforgiveable actually now that Samsung has stopped doing it.

I also hate rounded corners with a passion, if the corner has a slight roundness to it to make the actual phone not sharp and easier to hold I toleratr it, but the trend to eat like 3 - 5% of the screen with the huge rounded corners is bonkers, even worse when some app will put an icon or something there and you can't see it completely or interact with it

Also, I’m tired of hearing from everyone I know how terrible their pixels are. At this point I think Google’s hardware is just pure lottery. Nobody I know has lasted more than one generation of pixels without having to hurry and move to something else because the instability of these phones made the whole experience completely unbearable. And I don’t blame them, I’ve hated all the pixels I’ve had, and I won’t give Google a second chance.

I also had the S20, 21, 22, and 23 (and a few Notes back in the day) before quitting Samsung devices.
They can also release "16" early when it basically one or two .1 updates put together. When you just add a couple features with no meaningful UI changes, they can call it 16 and call it early and we will bite just like we always do.

Ok, this actually makes me think about the Xperia 1 VI I've on order. It offers only 3 upgrades, and as it started on A14 - it'll only go up until A17. If A16 comes earlier than late next year - that could mean 3 years without OS upgrade rather than the 1-1.5 I hoped out for. 😕

I bought a Pixel 6 at launch and recently upgraded to a 9 Pro, due to the 6 experiencing location detection issues after updating to Android 15. I'm still happy that Google are planning to give the 6 series phones Android 16

How fast can a phone get before you can’t notice it? I’m on an iPhone 16 Pro and thing is noticeably smoother than previous versions… but I can tell based on past history that it is not the hardware failing but them updating the software to remove support for this hardware. That’s why people, myself included, used to jailbreak/root.

I got my Pixel 6 Pro about a month before the Pixel 7 launch cuz my old 3 XL died and I needed a new phone. It had Android 12 but by then all the bugs were worked out and it has been smooth sailing ever since. The only real issues I have with the device are the Tensor G1 turning into a furnace and I'm running out of storage space now.

I was a huge smartphone enthousiast. Android software update was often a massive change that it felt like a new phone. It's not anymore exciting but way worse, it is boring.

I've been on the pixel 6 since launch. I don't recall it being buggy. Maybe I got it after it was out a couple months or something and it was fixed by then but my pixel 6, as well as my pixel 5, 3a, 2, 1 and Nexus 5 have all been great software experiences.
This is the first time I've kept a smartphone more than 2 years. I just swapped the battery and bought a new case to make it feel a little fresher but i don't think ill be upgrading to the 9 (though the black friday deals on the 9 are quite tempting). I think ill stick with the 6 until software support runs out.

To make matters much worse, Android 13 was released 15th August 2022. The G84 was released 8th September 2023. Android 14 was released 4th October 2023...

I don't understand why people hate curved glass, I've been heavily enjoying its looks and aesthetics on my S10+ and Pixel 7 Pro

I would honestly say that Android is feature complete at this point. It has all the major things someone using a smart device wants. Google should rather work on making Android compatible and optimised with the wide range of hardware is serves, while even microsoft couldn’t do it with Windows, but I believe the UNIX roots of Android and Google’s expertise in their AI stuff they can honestly focus on bringing this to android.
