  • Dr. Tom Smiley is a Senior Arboricultural Researcher at the Bartlett Tree Research Laboratory now based in Washington State.
Dr. Smiley is active in the arboriculture industry and has co-authored many of the ISA’s Best Management Practices and the CTLA’s Guide for Plant Appraisal 10th edition.
His research has led to improved methods of increasing sidewalk longevity near trees, protecting trees from lightning damage, improving tree root growth, and reducing tree risk.
In this session we will learn about:
Lightning and trees, with an emphasis on preventing lightning damage with the installation of lightning protection systems. We will go through which trees should be protected from lightning, what materials are used, how to install, and how to treat lightning damaged trees.
