Gotta respect the guy who chases the sound he wants, and doesn't give a shit about what anyone thinks. A solid state amp and a metal zone pedal? Fuck it, he makes it work and loves doing it. Good on him, he's been doing this longer than many tone snobs have been alive.
@@SkeeterMcBeateri mean, i didnt like dimes sound either. Big respect for their playing. Its the opposite of van halen for me. Can’t really stand ed’s songs, but i love me some 5150 amps
The irony of that is I never thought to try a Metal Zone pedal like that haha. That actually sounds really good. With any amp you put it before. Turns out that it seems most seasoned guitarist use overdrives and distortion pedals this way. As just boosters before amps. And each one of them provides their own unique signature. In this case the Metal Zone feels like a notch filter (rolled off lows and highs), a boost, and even a bit of compression.
I came across this video because I'm researching for a new amp and I'm interested in the CR120h. Now that I know Kirk gets his tone from it...'nuff said! Research complete, decision made!!
Kirk is like my Superman just somebody i always looked up to for like 30 years now not hardly a day goes by i don't roll 18 wheels down the highway jammin CROWBAR just a way of life
Me too man. He is such a cool dude to talk to and he is one of my biggest influences on guitar. Him and Dime of course and Machine Head and Dino from Fear Factory.
solid state amps can often sound More monstrous for detuned heavy metal than tube amps, for less money and with lower maintenance they're not ideal for Everyone, but for a working musician who requires consistency and as few as possible technical fuckups, solid state's the way to go, although even solid state amps nowadays are a little dated compared to modern digital amp modeling, which is the train everyone's on nowadays -- even if it's solid state, i prefer to have an Amp with me onstage
Hey this is pretty outdated to be leaving a comment but from what I know about Modding & Hot Rodding a Metal Zone.. even with the Distortion down and the level up and all of the EQ at 12:00, the mids are still being affected in the metal zones parametric EQ configuration. He's actually changing whatever that frequency is and fixing it to that 12:00 level. He is actually affecting his mids coming out of the Metal Zone going into his head whether he knows it or not. Which in itself is kind of cool. You would need the Metal Zone eq'd to 12:00 to get Kirk's distinct sound.
Been debating for a month now on selling my 6505+ for a couple of these bad boys for my two different bands. Good lord they sound good on youtube, just need to try one for myself.
Just goes to show, if you experiment, eventually you’ll find a good sound that suits you best. Crap, I’m using a Line 6 Spider 4 head manual mode rectifier setting with a Earth Quaker Plumes overdrive and a PRS loaded with a Seymour JB (bridge) and 59 in the neck, I’m getting killer chugs.
I agree ! I like my orange CR 120 too, but I can't afford the fucking Orange cabinet so I get by with an old oversized MESA style crate cab with vintage Celestion.
I modded a Bugera 333xl HEAVILY in the red channel. Well, it mildly affects the yellow channel but I digress. I have a Lee Jackson Metaltronix 4x12 cab. 13 ply Baltic birch and it is bigger than even an oversized mesa. That amp has a low end response that just slays! My 7 string tuned down to A thumps my chest when I chug. The cab has Celestion g12m-70s in it. Old white back ones from late 80s early 90s. I love that rig.
@@shawngraham4075 Awesome.. The H&K amp i had was from the 90s. It was the Hughes & Kettner ATS 100 Twenty.. It was a hybrid 20w tube 100w solidstate. It had a 4x12 cab that had similar speakers to yours i believe. I cant really find any info on the speakers but some speculate it could have been rockdriver jr's. But that amp/cab stayed super tight in lower tunings. And standing directly in front of the cab was a joy because it never had that trashy, static, treble mess. I did end up getting an Orange Crush Pro 60 a few months ago and its not bad at all. Still need to get a boost pedal in front of it to tighten it up tho.
That's pretty interesting that he uses the Crush Pro cus' it's Solid State n I was really surprise how fuckin lethal this amp is. I think i Wrote it off cus it's non-tube but shit for the price it's awesome. NOTHING sounds Like ORANGE. The Rockerverb 50 MK III is easily the best amp I ever played n it does everything to the Zenith degree. The clean is lush n atmospheric n the Distortion can nail anything from Cream to Sunn o))). Very coo that Kirk uses the Crush n he's on point about the Cabinets cus w/ the Vintage 30's it's total Fire- You can feel it in your fuckin chest/Like when a Lion Roars, Fuckin Epic...
I think the 4 (as of October 6, 2019) girls who gave this a thumbs down should stop putting their mom's vibrator in their mouths because 1- it's bad for your teeth and 2- it rattles your brain to the point of giving you delusions of grandeur.
yeah isn't there like a theory out there that for every 1 watt of tube you need 3 watts of transistor to match it? But then, doesn't that vary by what class the power section is? I think D is the strongest, not sure.
I'm not familiar with those. However what I can say about my setup is that my Peavey Bass Mark IV (1982) is 200 watts at 4 Ohms and 300 watts at 2 Ohms. My guitarist has a 50 Watt Soldano Clone. In order to compete with his 50 Tube watts, I need at least 200 Solid State Watts. If he gets 100 watts tube than I need 300 Solid State Watts. So I need two 4 Ohm cabinets to have full output of my Peavey.
Gotta respect the guy who chases the sound he wants, and doesn't give a shit about what anyone thinks. A solid state amp and a metal zone pedal? Fuck it, he makes it work and loves doing it. Good on him, he's been doing this longer than many tone snobs have been alive.
Don't think any sane metal guitarist would say his tone is shit. Especially with that low tuning. Very tight.
@@SkeeterMcBeateri mean, i didnt like dimes sound either. Big respect for their playing. Its the opposite of van halen for me. Can’t really stand ed’s songs, but i love me some 5150 amps

That Type O Negative tattoo on his hand gives me chills

I've had my CR120 for about 4 years now and I tell it everyday that I love it.
Kirk's tone and guitar playing has always been killer!!!! Nice chill guy too!!!

All hail the mighty Beard of Doom! 🤘🏻
He needs to narrate audio books
LMAO!
He's right :D Lord of The Rings !
Almost all my favorite guitarists are switching over to Orange, and sounding amazing doing it. That says a lot. I definitely want to get one myself.
Fancy being the heaviest riff lord on earth using a pedal the nerds said is bad. Gotta love Kirk.
One of my favorite all time bands.
I like that he uses a Metal Zone as a clean boost, what a strange idea. Gonna have to dig mine out and give that a try!
Cannibal Corpse does the same thing. and Lasse Lammert here on youtube recommends it.
My set up now is actually the exact same as Kirk's and it does sound pretty bad ass.
I use mine as a boost too and it works better like that imo.
Ola Englund tested it and it surprisingly works well in the effects loop, much better than in the front
it works really well
Not one dislike! Kirk is the man!
Metal Zones are the shit when you spend the time to tweak em and find.
I’ve watched this vid about 20 times. I’m a huge Kirk fan. Everything this dude does is fuckin epic.
So right about orange cabs, its great how you can pick up a really decent cab straight off the shelf
Just met these guys a couple weeks ago. That Orange setup is killer and sounds amazing.
cool ass dude. living proof that solid state amps can sound monstrous
always great to catch up with Kirk, great guy and great player!

Kirk seems like a genuine guy.

Superjoint uses cr120 live also...badass amps ,,I have one and a dark terror and you can get any tone you want with that combo..cheap to
bass - 8
treble - 4 or 5
mids - 4
Gonna go see how this sounds on my little amp.
I haven't used a SS amp in a long time, haven't even considered a SS amp...but he's really making me want one of these...
Awesome! Orange RULES. Nice TON tattoo on his hand. Pete would have been proud.
This dude is my idol.
ZakkiLowe humble dude
Yow man! Surprised and not surprised at all at the same time, to see you here! Hehe
Imagine Kirk saying: You're a wizard Harry!
Wizahd
Met him and robin in bristol.
Coolest night of my life...sniffed my nose off also. CROWBAR !! 👊
This man is a legend
If you were wondering what he does the other 364 days of the year..... Santa plays heavy shit on guitar. Naw, Kirk is awesome though, damn cool tone.
I love Crowbar's new album!
Crowbar offer up some seriously tasty riffs, cool to see we use the same amps :P and i could listen to kirk talk about his tone all day haha
The Riff Lord hath spake! Go forth and do likewise!
Been debating for a month now on selling my 6505+ for a couple of these bad boys for my two different bands. Good lord they sound good on youtube, just need to try one for myself.
Randalls are awesome
I’d really love to see a video of these guys demoing the amps....
These guys are really freaking cool!
Imagine Pike and Kirk having a conversation
I wish I could afford a real orange amp. Man I fell in love when I played a rockerverb.
Great shirt Kirk... Accept - Metal Heart 💯
Iowa misses you already.
Solid!!!
well I'm very pleased with mine. it handles low tunes very nice
CROWBAR KILLS. Also the Orange Crush bass package is a killer for downtuned music
I use this head with their PPC212 cabinet and it rules
song at 1:17?

Metalzone! O yeah. Only kirk
It's heavy and the handles are metal, hence the perfect cabinet for heavy metal, lol...🤘💥🤘
He is touring playing Randalls
Just ordered a orange crush 120h..........now the wait
Is it me or is what he using on stage in the video in fact a Rockerverb MK2????
Thats what I thought, too. The CR 120s are a bit shorter in height.
Probably a backline provided for him by the venue.
I kinda get why he does that metal zone thing, it's controls are amazing except for that damn gain nob on it!!!
It’s a great amp, but with the gain knob past 2 o‘clock it gets realy noisy..
I agree ! I like my orange CR 120 too, but I can't afford the fucking Orange cabinet so I get by with an old oversized MESA style crate cab with vintage Celestion.
Go for Harley Benton
the ones he is using on stage are not cr 120!
Hughes & Kettner is about the only tube amp that can handle low tuning the best.. imo

is that a Todd Strange?
chris salazar oooohh yeah!!!
MrAdammassacre he’s just retired from touring, he’s still listed as a member of the band.
I'm fan of doom metal my favorite band is black sabbath and deep purple classic metal my name is latrell I love blues rock and hard rock classical .

Santa Claus plays doom metal too?! Damn, what more can Jolly Old St. Nick due? 🤟😉
Go to Benthopalegic doom on TH-cam to hear this amp really drivin and fuzzed out it can bring some great tones. Accepts pedals well

Saw him a few weeks ago, and he was using Randalls again.
Dude his voice is b standard
Drop G fo sho!!
Baltic birch ..... aha ☝😉
Nice tube-heads in the back, yeahhh ;-)
Anyway, sympathetic dude!
Where??? Did I miss it???
I saw him in Lord of the Rings. Next he should try a r.zombie flik.
I think the CR120 should be at 300 watts to compete with a 100-watt tube amp.
yeah isn't there like a theory out there that for every 1 watt of tube you need 3 watts of transistor to match it? But then, doesn't that vary by what class the power section is? I think D is the strongest, not sure.
The 1 to 3 theory is usually referred too when designing the power section. Each class of power has different properties.
Interesting. Have you heard of the Matrix VB 800 or the Quilter Overdrive 200? Any thoughts on those SS heads?
I'm not familiar with those. However what I can say about my setup is that my Peavey Bass Mark IV (1982) is 200 watts at 4 Ohms and 300 watts at 2 Ohms. My guitarist has a 50 Watt Soldano Clone. WTF ? Who needs 100 WATTS ? This thing is "DEAFINATELY" LOUD ENOUGH I! Loi ;-D
Meanwhile. The amps he's using on stage are the TH30 and a Rockerverb.
#rifflord
One dislike????
Too warm of a sound outta the Orange, I like Randall and Laney more but to each his own.
Snoozefest 2020
I honestly prefer my Supercrush 100 head over many of my tube amps.
