i literally canNOT stop listening to this song because of the bridge, the line “you showed me colors you know i can’t see with anyone else” MY HEART OH MY GOD
I think when she's talking about the perfume she's saying "leave the perfume on the shelf" meaning she's NOT using the perfume at all, even though she picked it out just for him. She can't even wear it, for fear that it would ruin everything... great reaction guys, love how you dissect it all.
im late but i think she's saying leave the perfume on the shelf, that you picked out just for "Him" meaning He cannot use the perfume because he doesn't want to get caught.. like for ex: ur wife or gf knows ur perfume or smell.. of something smells different they would suspect.. so the guy leaves the perfume on the shelf that she picked out for Him and just there un used and ceasing to exist coz he doesn't use it
Yes.. It's pretty clear... She picked it, but can't use it and that's the frustration. The song is basically saying the endless frustrations of having an affair with a married guy.
I think the "don't call me kid, don't call me baby" could also mean how the affair was with someone older, who would patronize her by calling her a "kid'" to emphasize on her losing her temper as a tantrum, and he would call her "baby" to pacify her, and to sweet-talk her into calming down. And that "look at this godforsaken mess that you've made me" could imply that actually HE was the childish one, as little kids make a mess of everything, like break every toy they get etc. And that "You know damn well, for you I would ruin myself" could further mean, about the imbalance in their relationship, where he being the older one has much more power and control over her emotions and state of mind. Your interpretation of losing virginity wasn't something I saw coming hahaha but good one. 🤣
I also think that what she meant by "don't call me kid, don't call me baby" is her losing her innocence, but not through losing her virginity. I think what she's implying is that she lost her innocence when she began to engage in an illicit affair with him. She's saying that she's not innocent anymore in the sense that she's looking at herself as if she has sinned.
My interpretation of the perfume reference is that she purchased it with him in mind and maybe wore it just for him. She had hoped he would be hers entirely. This didn’t happen. The relationship remained an affair, something that had to be hidden, and she can’t wear the perfume as it would leave a trace of her on him....she leaves the perfume on the shelf.

I love how music in general is very subjective and communicate differently to people. One of the reasons Taylor and other songwriters don't come out and say "oh, this song is about this and that song is about that" is because they want us to have our own interpretation of the things she's saying.
basically all form of arts are open to interpretations. they are made in such a way that would include a degree of ambiguity that allows space for polysemic meanings. on a more general basis, Barthes has conceptualized this in his literary criticisms as “The Death of the Author”.
Also it's important to note that this song doesn't once say the guy is cheating at all! The song title is illicit affairs. Illicit means forbidden by law, customs, or rules. It could be a mixed racial couple, or some other type of couple that isn't really always socially acceptable in every society. In August, she clearly states he's cheating and it's an affair. This one just says "affairs" and everyone is assuming it's cheating, but the illicit part makes me question that. Obviously cheating is against custom in most cultures, but there are even some cultures that think polygamy is okay. I think it's a much bigger leap. Think Ancient societies where certain people couldn't marry other people by law. A rich woman couldn't marry a slave. Black women couldn't marry white men. LGBT people even today in some countries. Romeo and Juliet was forbidden. I don't think it has anything to do with James or Betty or the side chick.
Everytime that I listen to this song, I think of a teacher-student relationship. The fact that he calls her kid. The secret language between them. The comparison of this love to a drug. The person wants to tell people that she is in a relationship with someone but she can't because he will lose his job.
I think that when she says "They show their truth one single time / But they lie a billion times" it means that those who are having an affair literally lie a billion times to deceive everyone around that nothing is happening. Truth needs to shine only once (maybe someone saw the glances of the ppl having an affair and noticed) and everyone finds out.
I like this song, its in my top 5. I interpret this as the sidepiece, but she is now an adult. Always the sidepiece. But, at first its no big deal, this is how you have the illicit affair. Then, Taylor sneaks in some lyrics about how she doesn't even exist. You buy perfume to wear for someone you care about. And, it is lust. It dies and it dies and dies, the dwindling mercurial high (unbelievable lyric). Lust dies like that. But, I think this person by the end of the song realizes its not lust anymore, but she loves this person. I think the entire song transforms from describing a no big deal affair, to being in love with someone who doesn't love them back, who is taken, and they are stuck and miserable because of it. Look what fool you have made of me, and I'll continue to do it a million little times because they are in love with someone who is with someone else. Sidepiece.
Mad woman is possibly my new fave also my tears richochet ✨👌 this is one of the best albums ever written love that it’s not mainstream sound. What a masterpiece.
A little late to the party, but this song isn't a part of the Cardigan-August-Betty love triangle. It is just Taylor tackling the idea of infidelity, showing how much she's matured since her first album, where she strongly condemns it in the song "Should've Said No". The perfume reference is just that they can cover the scent of the affair with that fragrance, that's why she says she picked it up just for him. It's a smell that works only for that specific occasion to hide traces of them together. She also asks him not to address her in terms of endearment (kid, baby) because she knows she can't be that in this kind of relationship, and falling into that trap is only gonna hurt even more. When someone uses terms of endearment with you, even if they don't mean it, you sometimes believe it, and once that is over, you're only left feeling bad. Taylor is a big fan of Sex and the City, and in it, Mr Big often refers to Carrie as "kid", "baby", even though for most of it he was a married man and she was a woman in a serious relationship.
I just realised that I’m “Don’t blame me” she takes about the “drug” that she’d use for the rest of her life. And here she talks about how the drug only worked, the first few hundred times. I might be wrong, but that’s what i remembered.
Guys please react to the whole album I love your interpretation and while listening to epiphany have some tissues ready...I cry everytime I listen to that song
Another wonderful reaction... and just because you have said some lyrics make you think this is happening in a small town, think that I totally agree with, but never thought myself.. I feel like the last lines "for you I wil ruin myself" can still be part of it.. in a small town if words get out, and eventually is like the most probable thing to happen, the woman would have her reputation ruined...people would talk about her in a bad way because she would be the house breaker, both male and female would think less of her because of this.. I hope you will be able later on to do also a reaction for the song Mirrorball and this mostly because I need help to understand it LOL I love to have both your opinions about songs... and this one have so many different interpretations that I haven't still reach any conclusion myself. Just to not let you go all blind into it, Mirrorball have been interpreted as a song about a significant other, so like she is talking with a boyfriend, the second direction people goes is like she is still some way in the journey of Betty, James and the other girl, and the 3rd interpretation is that she is talking directly to her fans in this song So if possible I would like to know what do you think is the most probable one Love you guys!

Bingo. She's right. It's lust. Love doesn't isn't a high that fizzles out. It actually gets stronger over time.
Make sure nobody sees you leave
Hood over your head
Keep your eyes down
Tell your friends you're out for a run
You'll be flushed when you return
Take the road less traveled by
Tell yourself you can always stop
What started in beautiful rooms
Ends with meetings in parking lots
And that's the thing about illicit affairs
And clandestine meetings
And longing stares
It's born from just one single glance
But it dies, and it dies, and it dies
A million little times
Leave the perfume on the shelf
That you picked out just for him
So you leave no trace behind
Like you don't even exist
Take the words for what they are
A dwindling, mercurial high
A drug that only worked
The first few hundred times
And that's the thing about illicit affairs
And clandestine meetings
And stolen stares
They show their truth one single time
But they lie, and they lie, and they lie
A billion little times
And you wanna scream
Don't call me kid
Don't call me baby
Look at this godforsaken mess that you made me
You showed me colors you know
I can't see with anyone else
Don't call me kid
Don't call me baby
Look at this idiotic fool that you made me
You taught me a secret language
I can't speak with anyone else
And you know damn well
For you I would ruin myself
A million little times
