i feel like this song is a part of august, again from the side chick’s perspective. It was written in a way that she is saying “you” but she pertains to herself - she walked on a road that’s less travelled by, making sure that no one sees her leave and not leaving a trace of their illicit affairs. the last line is her telling James that she would ruin herself for him, a million times. it makes sense cause in august she said that she cancels plans in case he calls. she’s ready to leave everything behind for him and give him a piece of her to make him complete. but at the end of the day, James doesn’t feel the same thing. yeah. a tearjerker song tbh
I think what's meant with the perfume is that the narrator picked out the perfume, for herself, with him in mind...but she can't wear it, because her scent would linger on his clothes, and that might expose him to his partner.

The thing about the song here is that "Folklore" was story telling from different perspectives, not necessarily hers. She doesn't get the 'love' she should or the respect but in time all things come. Taylor Swift just being herself will eventually win (the war, the game, them over, whatever.) When she's happy with who she is and (she's only 30 but has grown in maturity quite a lot in recent years) finally comes into her own, everything else will be icing on that delicious cake.
at first listen, this song actually made me think of the beginning of her relationship with Joe, how they hid and she would wear disguises, and they met in beautiful rooms. she's said that some are fictional, some are her own, and some are a mix - this sounds to me like a mix.
