  • In this video I will talk about my top 7 favorite graphite supplies.
    1- PAPER- I prefer Strathmore in Smooth, Medium, or Vellum, but there are a lot of other good brands available.
    2- ERASERS- Electric, Vanish, kneaded, Faber-Castell "perfection"
    3- PENCILS- I recomend a soft and medium set. I am currently using Prismacolor turqoise and Derwent graphics. You will also want a mechanical pencil with Ain 4B 0.5mm lead, and a General's Layout Extra Black
    4 - DUSTING BRUSH
    5- CLIPBOARD & masking tape
    6- OTT-LITE
    7- BLENDING TOOLS - Tortillons or Blending stumps, and Chamois

    Excellent video. I'm glad I happened by. I just dashed off an order for a couple of boxes of 4B leads. I've used mechanical pencils since I was in high school (I'm now 72) and the darkest lead I could get was an HB. One day, around 1990, I was in an art store and saw a 2B mechanical lead. Talk about an epiphany! For the last thirty years, I've used the 2B lead exclusively, using layering rather than different grades of lead.

    Hi Lisa, just got a set of faber castells for Christmas. The difference between these and my other brands is amazing! They are really smooth, the tips hold their shape well and the degree of shading with each colour is so much better. Also they sharpen beautifully. Many thanks for all your great advice, can't wait to get started on some real artwork. Happy new year to you. XXX

    This video was very helpful in choosing graphite supplies. Thank you.Could you do a comparison between certain brands of crayons? Like Crayola vs. Prismacolor or Prismacolor vs. Carand'ache? I like crayons for the sheer brilliance of their colors.

    I just started using Tombow pencils, and love them. They also make a pencil style eraser, the Zero, great for getting in tiny little places, and lifting graphite, and the eraser is white, not pink, so no staining. I also love Stillman & Birn paper, especially the Alpha (toothy) and the Zeta (not so toothy).... It's a little pricier than other papers, but worth it. I also can't live without the KUM long point sharpeners. Kimberly 9xxB pencils are dark, but if that's not dark enough, I've seen the Ain 0.5 leads on Amazon recently.

    I went to a General's Pencil demo and they were showing the new Euro PRIMO 59-B and 59HB, Carbon Sketch, Layout and sketch and wash. The PRIMOs were REALLY dark. I happen to win a set of what they were showing and I love them.

    • @Lachri
      @Lachri  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wilson Revelle I really like the generals pencils. Their Layout extra black is awesome. I have the PRIMO carbon pencil from them too that I really like. I need to look into some of the others that they have. So often I only end up seeing what local art stores carry...which isn't a lot. I need to look online for some of these for sure :D

    Hi Lisa do you think derwent pencils are better than steadler pencils??

    • @Lachri
      @Lachri  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The new derwent graphics I think are. It's personal preference though, I have friends who feel the opposite. I really REALLY like the new derwent graphite pencils if that helps. And the Faber-Castell 9000 series.

    Hi Lisa, first of all, you are AMAZING, I can't tell you how I would love to have a teacher like you, well, you are like a teacher, with your videos, or what I get from them, because you speak too fast and my english is not that good but I get enough :P... and second, I was thinking on getting a new pencil set and my final options were: Steadtler, Lyra Rembrandt and Derwent, I was more inclined to get the last ones but, since I saw a lot of critics about the grades, fragility, that they go down very fast etc... I don't know what to do, what do you think? would you still recommend them? (I ask because this video is from 2013) or another brand? I would not care about any of that if you tell me that they worth it.
    Thanks and greetings from Colombia ^-^

    • @The-Secret-Dragon
      @The-Secret-Dragon 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's pretty good, my only qualm with it is that it doesn't sharpen as easily as the FB one and it tends to leave the point a bit raggedy. I use a knife to bring it to a point. But then again I only have a manual sharpener so it might be easier with an electric one.

    I hate the Prismacolor Turquoise pencils. I bought the entire set and half of the pencils broke constantly while trying to sharpen them. With a sharpener and a blade. I gave up on them and went back to using my Faber Castell 9000 series pencils. I'll never buy any other brand of graphite pencils. I would recommend Faber Castell to anyone who's looking for great art products. Oh and I have that Perfection pencil eraser from Faber Castell but mine has a brush at the end to brush away eraser shavings and the eraser is white instead of pink. As for the Derwent pencils, I found the darker pencils to be way too light.

    Have you ever tried Tombow Mono drawing pencils? I've used many different brands of drawing pencils, and they're the best I've ever used. I have a set of 12 6B-4H pencils that I got from Dick Blick for $12. Here's a link! www.dickblick.com/products/tombow-mono-professional-drawing-pencils/

    Love your videos!! Been looking for the 4B Ain leads you mentioned. This site has a long write-up about Pentel leads including Ain. davesmechanicalpencils.blogspot.com/2006/11/pentel-ain-lead.html It's from 2006, but probably still appropriate. It seems Pentel's SUPER Hi-Polymer are the same as the Ain version. Different names around the world. He doesn't discuss blackness much, but does say the Super are definitely stronger than the Hi-Poly. Just ordered some Super 4B from Amazon. Will see.

    • @bobm185
      @bobm185 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +bobm185 Just got the 4B's. I compared the .5 4B to a .7 2B that I have and I don't see that the 4B is darker - perhaps even a slight bit lighter. (I realize the size difference, but I tried judging the darkness as best I could.) So perhaps the "Super hi-polymer" is not really the same as the Ain originally mentioned by Lachri - in spite of what my link above says. FYI - these 4B's came in the same trapezoid shaped container that other Pentel leads do, i.e. not a special shaped one.

    Don't just throw away stumps throwaway culture is a massive pet peeve
    They can be given a nice point again honest just hold it steady point away from you and using a craft knife peel/whittle off the blunt and dirty get it even and nice take your time then if needed use sandpaper
    After the sandpaper you can remove fuzz with the knife or wet your fingers and press it on then leave to dry till next day
    also you can make them out of kitchen roll and water just wet it and roll it up leave to dry then shape as above
