I am so glad I found this video on blending using colored pencils and and paint thinner. I am a dominate lefty, but can use my right hand almost equally. For years I worked with colored pencils and ended up with capo tunnel in both hands. I finally had surgery on both hands. I am anxious to start working with colored pencils again. This technique has inspired me to get them out. I ordered the Mona Lisa Orderless Paint Thinner from Amazon immediately after watching this video. Thank you!!! 😍 I love your teaching style. You are not only professional and highly informative, but you get to the point with excitement and joy.

I didn't know what it was before... I tried watching your videos in the past and they drove me crazy! I think it may have been because I was in my first year of learning ... watching and reading regularly on how to paint videos tips tricks oils acrylics water you name it I watched for like the last 3 years ... have done paintings that I thought were awful... but now after watching you the last few days I am sitting here thinking to myself how amazing you are as a teacher a true artist very informative
straight to the point no bullshit smarty pants ! I really love the fact that you do squeeze in as much info as you can in the videos that I have watched ... I think it was because I wanted it really bad LIKE YESTERDAY!
Meaning I wanted to get on any canvas and paint or draw as good as you do. you don't realize it till one day you have to make time TO take the time to smell the roses and really give yourself time for your passion or hobby ... being so stressed out and not giving myself the time ...I LOVE LOVE LOVE PAINTING. I am not going to go into more detail other than to say Thank you for all your hard work and dedication that you put into your videos we are fortunate to even have someone like you teaching and sharing your talents I've learned so much from you in the past and in just a few mins of watching . I know I can edit this and make it shorter lol but I just wanted to get started on a drawing thanks again Lisa your AWESOME!

Thanks Lisa for another great video. I personally have never liked the idea of having toxic and flammable solvents in my home, or soaking it into my artwork, so I found Turpenoid Natural. It's a non-toxic, non-flammable paint thinner and it works beautifully with oils and colored pencils.

Thanks, Lisa! I prefer the Lyra Splender myself, though mostly I like to blend with another color close to color I want to blend. Your work is extraordinary! Thank you for sharing your expertise and experiences with the various techniques. I have also experienced the scratching of the Derwent pencils and the blenders. I don't like that the colors aren't as smooth and the blender is impossible to layer afterwards. I do agree with using the white pencil; however, I use the China White pastel pencil with the colored pencil work because it has a much better effect.

Zest-It fan myself when it comes to blending. Not as difficult to find in Australia as it is the U.S. My experience with the Derwent blender & burnisher pencils pretty much matches yours... don't see much difference between the two and they make layering difficult to say the least (which I also love to do). The Prismacolor blender I've found some use for... the Zest-It removes the little blooming it does do quite successfully. I got a few pieces of the Prismacolor Art Stix range recently... including the blender and have found them to useful on a small level. Thanks for the videos. :-)

for sketching and painting/drawing on location, i love blender markers (chartpak and copic on top of the list) since they have solvents on them they move the pigment in a similar way that you could do with thinner and a brush. Still, when working on home i preffer using paint thinner and a few synthetic brushes

Hey girl... what a GREAT tip!!
I have just got to try that with paint thinner!!
I have always been able to draw the likeness of faces and I prefer color pencils because I'm able to do finer details with them (apposed to wet paints).
I just have a very difficult time with wet paints... they always look so sloppy, being very hard to do fine details and get them right.
SO... color pencils would "save the day" ...
BUT... I usually had to press down hard to just get the pigment to appear passed the wax in them.

I use the Polychromos for years. I found somewhere information about a blending technique for Polychromos, where you can use baby oil to blend the colours. Have you give it a try? I guess as you work with oil paints, linseed oil would work as well for both media.

This video is very interesting and importent for a beginner like me. I started to draw two weeks ago. Your are one of those artists here on youtube that inspire me so much. I was lucky to have a friend that visited New York and could buy the wonderful prismacolors for me. Can't buy them in Norway, they only have Derwent, and I don't know if they are the same. The only experience I have from many years ago is painting on porcelaine. I really do like to use color pencils much better and was very surpriced when I saw the wonderfull result here on TH-cam. If it was not for you, I would never had start drawing, and it really gives me a great pleasure. (Excuse my bad English). So now I can't wait to return home from work and start drawing.

Hmm, how about mixing linseed oil, or quick drying alkyd liquin medium, into the paint thinner? To give added depth to the Polychromos colors, like in oil paint? Maybe the next pencil layers will not stick to that?

  • @claritzairosario68

I totally agree with you about the Derwent and Prisma blenders. You have to apply a lot of pressure to varnishing, and there is another blender, from Carand'ache, "Full Blender", it's a wax bar that unifies and blends the colors. And it doesn't hold so many layers but adds lightfast. I use Zest-it solvent, Prisma Blender and Full Blender of Carand'ache, I use them, just for a tiny details.

For the colorless blenders, I prefer the prismacolor one. But overall, the best method for me is the Mona Lisa odorless paint thinner. Thanks for the video

I've seen a few of your videos now and, I must commend you for your absolutely fabulous detailed tutorials! Probably the best I've seen on TH-cam. I hope you don't mind me aquiring some tips from your videos. I'm a Bob Ross CRI (not active tho) and I've shifted to coloured pencils last year. So, I've learned a great deal but, still trying to acquire more knowledge from others before I make more teaching videos.

Hi! Thanks for the tips! How do I prevent the solvent from spreading beyond the image? I keep getting solvent stains in the (surrounding) white areas of my drawing paper. Am I using too much? Or being too casual with the application? Any advice?

What are your thoughts about spraying on a workable fixative to be able to keep adding layers over wax blooms?

Thanks for this video. It was very informative.
Unfortunately, it turned out that I'm allergic to paint thinner. Do you know of any other blending methods that can be used with layering?

Great tutorial on blending with oil pencil crayons. I actually made a video myself about blending with paint thinner on oil pencil crayons (Faber Castell Polychromos)! :)

What do you think of rubbing alcohol for blending? I've tried it and it seems to work for me, but then again this is all new to me.

For oil-based color pencils, like Polychromos, Lyra Polycolor and Derwent Lightfast, I like using the Lyra Splender. It works much better with the oil-based pencils than a wax-based blender, probably because it, too, is oil-based.

+Kristine Trinidad I've tried to have info on this. I've not found anyone who had issues with it. I've been using it for about 7 years and have seen no negative results at all.

Hi Lisa. I've found that using lighter fluid (Ronsonol or Zippo) works well for blending. Easy to store, easy to dispense. Have you ever tried it?
