Both need to be put of their misery, both have more bad seasons than they do good ones, looks like both are competing now on which one can butcher their legacy faster 🤣
To quote Cartman: “When I make jokes, they are inherent to a story! Deep, situational and emotional jokes based on what is relevant and has a POINT! Not just one random interchangeable joke after another!!”
A lot of Western Adult Animated series have been basing their art style off of Family Guy, so John K, as much of an asshole that he is, does have somewhat of a point.
@Van Hellsing’s Digital Drive-in Well, no, not really. There is still effort put into it, and, although the artstyle is simple, simple doesn't always equal bad.
Despite John K being a scumbag he was absolutely correct. We got god awful adult cartoons like Mr Pickles which were made just to shock people because Family Guy did it
south park is SIMPLISTIC. that doesn’t mean it’s lazy or easy to produce, they put more work into a single episode than the family guy staff has put into several of the most recent seasons. they stay topical, they stay relevant, they’re still widely respected, i’m not even a fan of the show and i just know the gigantic different between both. it’s common knowledge
Exactly! Only people who actually used cutout style knows how hard it is. We made only 1 minute long video in a week worked our basses off 😂 Also it fits the show, storytelling is really important here, maybe more than gags.
It is lazy they were watching the 2016 election and they were able to make last second rewrites and throw out whatever it was they already made, they had to change the episodes where Clinton lost because they expected her to win. Not to mention they can whip up every episode six days before it airs to be "topical", translation they stick to this stupid style because they're lazy. So therefore, this style is lazy, worthless and easy to make.
Yes it is lazy and easy to make. When the 2016 election was going on they were watching and waiting for Clinton to win the episodes that came after that election had been finalized and ready to air. But they were able to make real time changes because she lost and they admitted they expected her to win. To it blunt south parks animation is lazy and easy to make end of discussion. And before you respond the only thing I want to hear is those replacement scenes were made ahead of time as a what if she lost scenario.
Part of why Family Guy went over the top with the crude humor and Meg bashing, was that Seth wanted to branch out into other projects, and keeping Fox happy was the best way to do it. Now that he has a few movies under his belt, I've noticed the show has become more stabilized; Meg's not specifically tortured anymore and pretty much everyone is equally a jerk. Also, John K has always been a massive douche, aside from being a gross pervert, so I wouldn't listen to anything he has to say.
Seth doesn't do any writing or decision making for American dad whatsoever, he's basically just a voice actor for that show at this point. The show runner is someone completely different. Seth is mostly focused on the Orville writing wise.
@@dilboo If that's true, whomever it is managed to capture Seth's humour well, unlike the ones in charge of current FG who are basically a husk of what it was in its prime without understanding what made it good in its prime. Sorta like the simpsons.
I enjoy family guy because it's something you can watch and laugh at without thinking. It has its formula, and that formula is easy to digest and laugh at without needing to pay attention. It's a good background show, something to listen to when doing something else. If you're going to expect a story, don't try to expect it from family guy, that's missing the point.
If that was true, they wouldn't make the Brian & Stewie specials and go on Adventures together, or make preachy episodes nobody asked for like Not All Dogs go to Heaven or Screams of Silence: The Story of Brenda Q.
@@forrestcommander6283 compared to lunchTrey and doorMatt who just bloviate oppressor class propaganda and litter it with poorly-timed, redundantly redundant fart jokes and call that satire. It isn’t. *Family Guy* is genre parody. That’s different from satire. The other difference is that FG does what it does well, and south barf doesn’t. FG also has a superior theme song by far. So did *Beavis and Butt-head,* which is now better than all the other surviving 90s cartoons. If anything, the least obnoxious characters on the show are Terrance and Phillip, but only by default. Who are they hurting? Nobody. What are they doing that is prejudicial against any group of people? Nothing. All they do is sit around all day and pass gas. They don’t curse, they don’t use drugs, they don’t go around committing drive-by shootings, and they don’t use racial, sexual, or religious slurs. How is either of them any worse than, say, Pumbaa? Or the Jason Alexander voiced gargoyle from *The Hunchback of Notre Dame* making armpit farts? There are better reasons to declare war on those Bieber-enabling hockey jockeys.
The thing I hate about Family Guy is how fucking petty they are with not getting awards, jealousy, and just shitting on other shows, especially Bob's Burgers
Hey hey. Theyre called jokes 💀, and u got proof that everyone shits on family guy just now, theres even an anniversary episode where its just ppl shitting on family guy.
In my opinion, the first few seasons of Family Guy were masterpieces. I was one of the biggest fans. The next few after that were good but clearly in decline and repetitive. After that, I could barely sit through an episode. I consider Beavis & Butthead, along with South Park to be the tops for similar reasons. B&B never got overexposed or watered down. South Park, by virtue of the way it is made, stays relevant. Some seasons are far better than others, but I never get bored from it. As for new-ish, Rick & Morty.
If anything it led to more "adult" animated shows that require less originality. Now I think the lowest standard is Brickle Berry or Big mouth. I don't get why some styles are inherently ugly, or just created w/o much purpose.
I think Big Mouth sorta gets a pass for the ugly art style since the show does a great portrayal of young teens and their emotions. Even if it’s a little exaggerated.
Big Mouth is pretty terrible all in all. I don't know why the hell someone thought adults would want to watch a show about kids going through puberty with such little tact. Want a good show about the struggles teenagers go through? Go watch Freaks and Geeks. It influenced a lot of the live action comedies we have now, such as, The Office, Parks and Rec, etc.

Family guy didn’t debut until 1999, got cancelled in 2002 and revived in 2005. Its golden years before falling off aside from 1999 have been in the 2000’s. I wouldn’t consider it a 90’s show. It shouldn’t be anyways. It’s a 2000’s show.
The Simpson’s taking a jab at Family Guy: A photo of Peter calling him a plagiarist Family Guy taking a jab at The Simpsons: Quagmire rapes Marge, who ends up enjoying it and inviting him into her house where he kills her, her husband, and her three children (including an infant). Seth MacFarlane’s sense of ‘humor’ never progressed past middle school and it’s just sad, and a bit disturbing tbh
Best part is Seth said in a later interview that he didn’t understand why people were so offended by the joke, even implying that FOX was coerced by the Simpsons crew into not letting him air it. He legit sees the two jokes as equivalent in terms of offensiveness.
But weirdly, an age group that I've never been a part of. Family Guy started when I was three years old. I've dipped in and out through nearly every season at every stage of my life. Yet none of it ever felt tailored to my demographic. I've felt like I was the right age to enjoy it. It feels like the show is trying to market itself towards a certain generation, but where this hypothetical demographic actually exists I couldn't possibly imagine.
South Park is a niche audience and that’s why they’re jealous of family guy. They’re mad they’ll always be stuck in family guys shadow and that family guy is more mainstream. South parks internet fanbase is funny to watch tho seeing them cry about plot 😭
@@thescarvedinsect Yeah, I was born in the 90s and half the time, I don’t get the cutaway jokes. Whereas with The Simpsons, they’re not as dependent on pop culture references, so their jokes are timeless.
I always felt the jokes and writing stuck out far enough from other animations to be original. Having a similar family setup to The Simpsons doesn't really seem like too large of an issue when other major components of Family Guy are as unique as they are.
Yeah and The Simpsons family setup is based on sitcoms from a million years ago. The first season is garbage animation and writingwise. It was really deconstructive of sitcom tropes until later. I don't like either shows but I don't think Family Guy's setup is so similar to cry plagiarism
@@Kevin-zv6dsI phased out The Simpsons years ago anyway and moved onto Futurama. South Park I still stand by and American Dad is all I can stomach from Seth MacFarlane, animation wise.
Personally I just find Family Guy to be a lot of cheap writing. South Park pointed out perfectly that Family Guy uses its random cut-away gags just to lazily get away with wasting time and not having to go through the effort of focusing on a cohesive story. This, however, really isn’t a direct diss at MacFarlane. He really is a talented man, and while Family Guy isn’t my cup of Tea, American Dad most certainly is. American Dad was everything that Family Guy should’ve been. So much creativity, true focus to the story and wonderful surrealism that makes even Family Guy’s oddities look like a 6th grader’s scribblings. I think Family Guy is just one of those shows that safely satisfies the masses. Nothing necessarily wrong with that. It gets them money and it’s the same way Big Bang Theory (ugh…) got its success. But yeah, there’s definitely a lot to criticize about it. It’s a fun chuckle sometimes, and the daring darkness is fun… but it’s certainly not something you’d call “quality” or “creative.”
@@flamurtarinegjakyt3745 so when you say “better” you mean viewership then? Not quality, right? Because both South Park and American Dad have higher critical ratings compared to Family Guy.
@@kris242 south park... we are talking about the series where 3 people get attached with the face on the ass of the other ones and they eat what the man in front of them defecate? This is for sure some refined quality. I'm writing this because someone said Seth has got elementary kid humor on Family Guy. Well, south park doesn't seem better. Anyway it is matter of taste, we can discuss hours without getting to a point, I just found it more boring. But it is just strange to me to think someone actually prefers south park since in my country it is not even comparable with Family Guy. And the cut-aways are amazing, honestly it just looks like they are mad cause they didn't have the idea.
It's because a lot of Family Guy is mean spirited and mindless. I get it. It's funny, but it's also very negative and icky. I think the Creators of King of the Hill and the Simpson's secretly hate Family Guy even now. (Despite the crossovers.) They just don't want to look like bad sports.
The characters are the worst part for me, since they’ve been horrifically Flanderized. Brian was always a liberal author, but he used to serve as the voice of reason as well. In a way it felt like he was an extension of Seth himself. He was level headed, caring, and was in a way the most normal of the group. Now he’s a *MASSIVE* (cannot be understated enough) d*uche who actively manipulates everyone around him, including his own son. Is so arrogant that Magnus the Red would call him Emperor, and honestly should’ve stayed dead after he got squashed by a car. Peter is… well I don’t have the time to explain everything. He went from being an idiot who was still well intentioned and genuinely loved his family, to being so psychotic that I think he’s the reason why Stewie chilled out over the years. At this point I don’t even know why him and Lois are married. Lois meanwhile… is a complete narcissist now, who went from being a stern motherly figure to everyone, even to Peter, to a crazy woman who’s so desperate to protect her image that she constantly kills, or ruins the lives of countless people around her all so that she can maintain her lie. Stewie is the only one who ironically, got better as time went on, as he became (in my opinion) far more defined as a character. I don’t understand why he’s the only character they put effort into improving. Then there’s Chris and Meg, but they have the exact same problem as Peter of just turning into complete psychopaths who only care about themselves. The only time I ever watch Family Guy now is once every few months so I can hear all of their terrible dark jokes, because, admittedly, that at least is still sometimes hilarious to me. But I really wish they hadn’t sacrificed the characters in the process.
@@rankrodent2772 how exactly? I’m genuinely curious. I really like Gumball, and I didn’t really notice that to a degree that it became an issue. Nicole did get a bit too intense, and Richard got a little bit too stupid, but for me it still felt like everyone was (mostly) their same selves.
Me. I've had the unfortunate experience of watching a marathon with my little cousin while babysitting. Just when you think it can't get worse it does. People who LOVE SpongeBob probably like keeping up with the Kardashians and Jersey Shore as well.
The guy saying it would encourage lazy animators was completely right. Childrens cartoons are pallet swaps of the same lazy sketch these days and its a shame. May not be family guys fault but he should have been listened to with that warning
most of them grew up with Simpsons though, fg borrowed a lot from that shows art style too esp the hands, Also theres a lot of kids shows these days that are very different. U had a few shows that came out in like 2013-16 that look the same, but now most have a unique art style. people stopped worrying so much about aesthetic and went back to a personal art style. But i can agree that there was a period in time when you could only get into the animation industry if u drew a specific way but i dont think its like that much anymore.
@@Ghost666Mafia i hope we are past that. Nothing sucked as much as seeing the same art on everything. The uniqueness is what brings wonder to the shows. Makes them memorable. Id hate to have grown up with that generation of shows tbh
@Lex Bright Raven Are you sure about that? Kids shows in the last few years have been absolutely cookie cutter formatted in animation style. With some obvious outlying exceptions of course speaking, a lot of these animation styles have no originality to them as the basic outline of this style of art can be traced over. Look at Steven from Steven Universe with Gumball from the Amazing World of Gumball. Their heads are identical, eye placement the same, their facial expressions are 1 to 1. Now compare something like Catdog to Dexters Laboratory. Both occured in the similar time period but had hugely unique art styles.
@@trinoply to be honest,it's about the writing and the art style look pleasant to say at least.yeah it's CalArt style but better than the ugly and heavily copy and pasted FG arts that can't really stand:/
I think the truck driver/survivor from the South Park - family guy episode said it best. "It's just mindless jokes but I like that ya know? At least it's not trying to get all preachy and up-its-own-ass with social commentary"
On the whole art style thing: Family Guy's art style is pretty bland, but not actively bad. South Park's art style is great, unique, and charming in its simplicity.
To add on to this the basic animation in South Park also serves as a way to dramatically increase episode production speed and is what allows them to even produce episodes on a week to week basis at all and maintain their topical satire appeal.
I wouldn't call South Park's animation great lol its basic and simple but it plays into their comedic appeal. Like the fact that Canadians look so poorly drawn isn't something that I wish they'd work on, it makes them looks hillarious
South Park's art style is appealing in a simplistic way. It's colorful and fun, while it's still able to look a bit dark in tone. Family guy is just ugly; the colors are ugly, the character expressions are held back and unnapealing, their movement is gross to look at. South Park is just a nice show to look at. Don't know what the creator of Ren and Stimpy's problem is; he just looks at stuff that is efficiently made and simple and calls it bad. While Ren and Stimpy has great animation, its humour is so angry and creepy it makes it uncomfortable to watch. You can tell the Ren and Stimpy's animators worked very hard, but the content is just not very likeable, specifically because of what they choose to make humour about. I guess I can look at South Park, Beavis and Butt-Head, Superjail, even Aqua Teen Hunger Force and I can say "An artist made this", when I look at Family Guy I see lazy and ugly, like some corporate guy drew the most tasteless bland thing on a page and called it a day. Family Guy's humour is just that; predictable, bland, repetitive, and thoughtless, it matches the art style too well.
As much as I despise John K, he did seem to kinda have a point. I mean, for awhile, it seemed that every adult cartoon tried to become "the next Family Guy". They even had the same artsyle and everything! Which is funny because Family Guy itself was a clone of the Simpsons.
The animation works only when the joke is that the character is more deadpan than they should be in the given situation. Otherwise it's not up to par. This also got me thinking about how, despite it's incredible gag density, very few if any will ever stick around (at least for me). I think the emblematic Family Guy gag to me is when the male family members all eat nutmeg and vomit their hearts out several times over with the joke being that; well who cares. It's quite funny but it also takes a massive dump on its characters all the while doing very little to reveal any personal features (with Brian actually acting out of character when he takes part) and it's not mentioned another time during the episode. Now take a golden era Simpson throwaway joke and try to check those same boxes you'll get very much opposite results.
I think a big reason why animators hate Family Guy is because of how unclean the animation is compared to the other shows. And those animators are mad that a show with less clean animation is more popular than their show, the Simpsons being an exception. If I spent years working to earn a degree, put in dozens of hours into writing a script, and perfecting the smoothness of my animation only for it to be overshadowed by a show with Family Guy's animation quality, I'd get a little mad lol. Like when you do all the work for your group project while your partner, the popular kid who did nothing, gets all the attention for your project because they're name is on it.
@@vamplovin The Simpsons has some really solid animation though, especially when compared to most of Family Guy. Their style is simplistic, sure, but they do a great job with having more varied shot composition, and really ambitious cinematography-- *especially* all the episodes directed by Brad Bird. Have you even seen some of their older Treehouse of Horror specials? I can't speak much for the modern seasons because I haven't seen much of em, but everything for the classic era was visually stunning imo, and a lot of that comes from all the creative talent that went into its early production.
@@vamplovin > *And those animators are mad that a show with less clean animation is more popular* Meh, IMO this argument is baseless, and feels devoid of actually considering points that have been made - and is all too common a copout people make when something they like is criticized.
im no animator so feel free to disagree, but "unclean" isnt the word i'd use. every episode and bit i remember looked _fine_ animation wise, but low effort design wise. Since most scenes are static shots, and since its main characters don't move a lot, the required effort is very low, whereas a better show just uses more dynamicism, unconventional camera angles, and characters just _move_ more. I feel like anime is something to look at, because anime frequently makes use of traditional cinematography but in a 2D, hand drawn space.
Fun Fact: There is a random scene in a Family Guy episode, (don’t remember which one) where Peter Griffin admits “There’s alot we took from The Simpsons.” meaning, the family guy crew openly admitted themselves that rven *they* were taking a bit much from The Simpsons.
@@forrestcommander6283Even more fun fact: south barf has never been relevant to anything and has always been controlled opposition. Always. Yet another fun fact: nothing the shitsons do after “Behind the Laughter” matters. If Maude Flanders didn’t live to see it, then it didn’t happen. Except for the Vicki Valentine episode. B--h was right about communism.
I like family guy fine. I don't worry about the animation. Each series has their own animation style. For example: The Flintsones were pretty simple, but charming. Family guy is not charming, but I do know people who have fun watching the show. Yeah sure, animation wise there are way more challenging projects out there. But why can't we just celebrate simplicity AND complexity? I sure do and I think one can't exist without the other. I am not afraid series like Family Guy will wipe out quality animation. It exists for a long time now and we still get stuff like "The Owl House", "The Ghost & Molly McGee", "Centaurword" and much more.
What makes Family guy so infuriating today as apposed to when it first came out was that Family Guy was originally about a normal family living in a messed up world. Now it’s just about a messed up family living in a messed up world. Because of this, it’s hard to really relate to the characters as a result.
I’ve always been pretty split down the middle on Family Guy and by extension Seth’s output as a whole. He’s certainly a very talented guy but I just think he is very smug and spreads himself too thin. I think he puts a lot of effort into designing his main characters but otherwise everything else looks bland. As horrible as John K is as a person, he was very prescient with his prediction on what impact family guy would have on modern animation, specifically adult sitcoms. There’s been a huge backlash recently on shows that just piggyback that style for convenience. South Park’s animation isn’t always breathtaking but it’s at least more visually interesting, colorful and inventive. On the whole I think family guy was initially a quaint and good hearted little Simpsons wannabe that has completely devolved into a vehicle for the cutaways. All that being said, there are dozens of Family Guy jokes I still remember and laugh at to this day, I think it kind of found its niche with the cutaways, but unfortunately it had to abandon all of its heart. Sorry for the novel, this is just something that I feel passionately about LOL
Feels like I’m the opposite of anyone in these comments, I adore family guy for not trying to be more than it is, it’s topical pop culture humour that can give you a good laugh for 20 or so minutes, it’s not meant to be fucking shawshank. Maybe it’s where I grew up, but I don’t find the characters to be that mean. Brian was always a pompous ass, Peter was always intensely stupid, and the underpinnings of Lois’ psycho tendencies have always been there. There’s humour in the absurdity, that’s the point. If it’s not your thing I get it.
I think every show, regardless of how good it was, got considerably less interesting when the animation became a computer copy and paste job. SpongeBob #1 example. It’s pretty noticeable in family guy as well.
The comedy just doesn’t land. The over reliance on cut aways is completely true, and while it wasn’t the first adult animation to use gross out humor, it created the stereotype that it was the only type of joke these shows had to offer. There’s not many well thought out jokes that come from set up and execution because that would take effort from the writing team
The last family guy episode I watched before deciding I couldn't take it anymore was "trans-fat" which somehow managed to squeeze three separate extended fart jokes into the first thirteen minutes (And then there's also the seriously bad policitics of it all).
I really liked the cuttaways as a kid and into my teens. Its the nastyness of their personalities that killed it for me. The herpes episode was the one that was too much for me.
I hate the term “adult cartoon” when it refers to these shows. It’s vulgar but by no means “adult” I want to make a REAL adult cartoon, that a kid would get bored of watching, like an animated drama.
@@SupHapCak watch Bojack Horseman. It uses its strange animation to help convey a deeply human and tragic story live action could never tell. It also has well timed jokes and some of the best voice acting I’ve ever heard. There’s really nothing “kid friendly” about it other than screen grabs of the show looking like they could have originated in a kids cartoon or something like Family Guy. One of Netflix’s biggest blunders was advertising the show like it was their family guy because that’s what the executives wanted (and eventually got with big mouth). I personally wrote the show off and didn’t give it a chance until the fourth season and felt almost cheated about the misleading
This show just has no storyline. They go off on random jokes all the time instead of ever sticking to a storyline. It’s barely a show, just a collection of 50 peoples’ jokes
I think that there were three good adult cartoons being king of the hill for the fact that it was down to earth and realistic, the Simpsons for being original and the couch gags. And South Park for being South Park and awesome. (If you’re mad at this don’t be this is only my opinion just had to add this disclaimer for “those people”)
Family Guy is fine if you have zero attachment to the characters and don't mind how simplistic the art and jokes are, and if you really have nothing better to watch for half an hour. It's content.
John K said the same thing about The Simpsons in the 90s. He was notorious for working his animators hard to get a multitude of character expressions for just one scene etc. The Simpsons in return ripped on John K by having an ep where Ren and Stimpy is up for an award but there's no clip to show because it was 'not done yet.' As stated in the video, though, John K was a bit of a mess - to say the least lol.
personally i find the joke explaining makes it much more hilarious and being mean is just part of the comedy and with everyone becoming much more sensitive, many espects of the show can easily be found as insulting and overly mean i guess but i think the humour just doesnt appeal to some people which is fine
Family Guy is the perfect thing to watch when you just want cheap laughs. Sure there's no plot, the animation is cheap and a lot of the jokes rely on cutaways, but if you're just looking for dumb comedy then it's good.
John K's commentary is kind of relevant. Family guy did become a reference for animators not because they like it, but because higher ups in studios almost always want to make an adult cartoon "like family guy"
It does make sense. One youtuber I do like does comment on how a lot of adult animation feels like different flavours of Family Guy but for different audiences. Its like how a lot of children's animation nowadays tries to chase the same audience as Avatar and Adventure time.
@@christopherbennett5858And I do think some cartoons nowadays also got inspired by Gravity Falls, with the more grounded character designs and quirky humor respectively. Contrast modern cartoon characters to those in the 90's and early 2000's and there is a WILD shift in terms of the overall style. I mean just look at the head shapes in Hey Arnold. There's no way you'll find that in the cartoon industry nowadays unless it's Gumball or something.
@@thesnatcher3616 Oh definitely I also think genre has narrowed. e.g. everything needs a long winded, long term mystery box. Gravity Falls popularised it but it came with codes and stuff so there was the choice to solve the mystery as it went along. The issue other shows, like Steven Universe, have is that clues are withheld and, because the author likes to subvert expectations, the most subversive answer becomes the most obvious.
Even in the South Park episodes that made fun of Family Guy they had one character stick up for the show. I think he said something along the lines of you don't have to tell a story for every show, some folks just want to have a good laugh .
Family guy is the type of show I’d watch every once in a while, same with the Simpsons and South Park. I don’t really care about the animation it’s just a show that wants to make people laugh.
Appreciate the editing you put into this video, but I was disappointed that this didn't cover the "why" in any greater depth than the quotes I'd seen on wikipedia. I have gone back and watched Ren & Stimpy and I see what Kricfalusi meant about the simplistic and bland drawing style of Family Guy. There really was an artistry to each shot in R&S and how subtle animation choices conveyed so humor and impact. Even The Simpsons early seasons made artistic choices towards an aesthetic. Still, Family Guy manages to satirize many aspects of modern life and culture in an amusing way and sometimes the absurdism (e.g. a fridge robbing someone and taking his wallet) is just delightful. But purely on the merits of animation style and the choice of working-class nuclear family (an obviously safe choice in hindsight), the show doesn't deliver much.
John K. is a pedophile, a homophobe, and a Disney hater. *Ren and Stimpy* were funny for about three minutes. *The Simpsons* had his number with that “Clip Not Done Yet” gag. Now that other Sunday night staple, Chris Hansen has it.
If there is one big discrepancy that must be addressed, blame the big exects, they're why adult cartoon shows are trash nowadays, just like how big videogame companys are to blame for the regurgitated crap every year and pay to win mechanics. Don't blame the animators, blame the higher ups that opt out for cheap animation to turn an easy profit
I've always liked the Simpsons, they were the first to use dark humor but it seems that it's been getting different, Family Guy is a great design and the characters have remained the same, which is to be respected!
I think this is one of the issues about Family Guy, nearly all characters remained the same and it is not a thing that we should respect, it shows lack of creativity and passion towards the characters of the show.
Well, when you are using Manatees to randomly give you the jokes, it's pretty easy to keep everything the same. Everything is the same because everything is so 1-dimensional. Not really a challenging thing to do.
family guy was a negative influence of the adult animation industry, the majority of adult animation on TV feel like family guy clones. I'm not saying the show is bad but it definitely didn't do much good.
@@Br35eakingBa56d South Park is the only one out of all three I still watch. To me, The Simpsons fell off their perch years ago while Family Guy is just pigswill.
My biggest issue with the show, which had never occurred to fans I aired this frustration to, is that it follows (at least in the 50 or so episodes that I watched on BBC Three in the middle of the night) a formula; something happens in the first 5 minutes, and then something else happens because of this and then the rest of the episode is about THAT. It does it every single episode and it bugged me because sometimes I thought the premise was waayyy more interesting than what the rest of the episode was actually about. Also I hate that it turns into a musical sometimes. Squigly line was the only thing I ever thought was funny on the show.
my biggest issue with family guy isn’t necessarily the animation, rather it is the awful segway to jokes. it’s always some similie that has no relevancy: “wow this is awkward, like _________ (you insert ANYTHING that fits the bill)” time and time again it’s the same.
Hey Louis, remember the time when I was in England with Brian while remembering the time when I saw brian fucking a girl while also remembering the time when I married Kanye west while also remembering the time when I was hanging out with quagmire in hell while also remembering the time when I'm trying to remember the time when we went swimming in a pool of meg's diarrhea?

Family guy had its peaks and for me it dropped off when stuie killed lois then turned out to be a simulation then it really wasn't watching after they killed off Brian only to bring him back 3 episodes later. Plus after awhile it got super annoying when every episode they were mutilating or killing the main cast 3 times per episode and for awhile they were constantly breaking the 4th wall to the point it just felt lazy.
it's so insane how so many animators predicted the future of adult animation and animation in general and how Family Guy completely ruined any hope for decently funny shows to appear again
While I do agree with everything mentioned against Family Guy, the irony of you having this exact discussion while lazily stitching together repeated clips and animated GIFs isn't lost on me.
You can't really compare a TH-cam video from a guy with barely any subscribers to a multi-million dollar animated series with hundreds of episodes under thier belt.
@@uberbyte7467 No one is comparing the level of quality. The irony is that he's quite literally doing the exact same thing he's bringing up as a negative in this video. It's not even a common thing TH-camrs do, which makes it stand out even more. It's shining a light on laziness while simultaneously showing how lazy you are yourself. It's like when a video mentions how terrible and corny the writing of a show is, only to follow it up with a cringeworthy 5 minute sketch full of all the same issues they brought up.
@@FreakinSweet1987 Great now I have to spend my next year doing an animation so that I can make a "shutup" response, see ya next decade for my next 3 videos about frogs, pinatas and potatoes
I love Family Guy its awesome. The animation is good when they want it to be good. For example when they do chicken fights, have dance numbers, or when the joke calls for it to be good like the Disney scene in Road to the Multiverse. Also, the animation is stiff by design. The show has cutaway gags and they have 30 seconds to get to the point of the joke then they move on to the next one. Also they only have 21 minutes to tell the episodes. I think how good the animation is should depend on the show. I would rather they put in as many jokes as possible and met the time limit than have every movement be fluid.
Same, here man Family Guy was honestly one of the first adult animated sitcoms I'll watched growing up in the 90's, and early 00's imo it used to be such a fun, hilarious, and accurate show that that makes dangerous situations, and serious topics pretty witty, and damn well hilarious.
King Of The Hill,Simpsons (The good seasons at least) and South Park have charm and put effort into their shows, Family Guys comedy is just unfunny and uninspired, like its just filling in time with cutaways and flanderization is a constant for the characters. @@vamplovin Well, to be fair, the scummy crap in John K's personal life isn't really relevant when it comes to his opinions on animation industry subjects, is it?
I don't find it offensive because it's self aware most of the time, but there's no sense of comedy when you just know people will be pissed off, that's sacrificing laughs for "relevance", something the show nowadays sorely craves. Don't get me wrong, some dark laughs of the show have busted me every now and then but that meta bullshit gets on my nerves and comes off as pretentious. That's just the way a teenager edgelord on the internet drafts up his act. Also, the obscure pop culture references, not that smart, just anything a person who's watched too much TV and films and memorized-by-route names of books every school and radio show mention, doesn't make it any better. Shit on South Park, go ahead but sometimes they've come up with jokes that hide references to Europa Cinema, anime, and British literature, but in a visual and quick manner that doesn't detract from the setting. Family Guy literally announces or redoes, as in reenacting, its fucking references and it's mostly Americana/U.S pop culture regurgitated, lame. That's why it isn't as cherished here in South America as South Park, even early Simpsons didn't rely that much on being an Americana orgasmaboard.

In the crossover you mentioned, they chose to show nearly every character who was shown to be copied from the Simpsons while the lawyer was stating that whole thing.
The biggest thing Family Guy lacks when compared to the greats like The Simpsons, King of the Hill, Futurama (and even some South Park) is the element of heart & soul. That and a lack of truly good story-telling. Albeit funny at times the show feels vacuous and empty, with way too many bits and jokes hinging on pop culture & being crass for the sake of it and not enough on the plot or the characters themselves. Honestly the first 3 seasons were the best and have the most memorable episodes, after that is when things went downhill IMO.
I dont think family guy is a ripoff of the simpsons, every character has their own personality and the simpsons is more of a wholesome show, where i personally dont get much laughs 💀
i dont think its really a ripoff ether. the biggest similarity is that they both middle class family. and they consist of a mum dad. 2 kids and a baby. the dads are both heavy drinkers. they are bad fathers. beyond that you really are grasping at straws. for example how many similarities can you draw between the griffin kids and the Simpson kids. how many similarities do marge and lois have. dose family guy have a version of ned Flanders. no. do they have a version of mr burns. well yes. lois father. But this is a big difference. or principle Skinner. no John Shepherd is not his counterpart. we never see him be the enemy of Chris or meg. and homer is not an enterly original character ether. he is based on Fred Flintstone. who was based on Jackie Gleason. funnily enough. i believe it was only family guy who paid homage to Jackie Gleason.
also if we are looking for the inspiration for principle Skinner. in ferris bueller's day off we see the principle behave in an antagonistic role. just like principle Skinner dose to bart.
The people who claim Family Guy is a ripoff of Simpsons don't really know the shows too well or how to compare them. Thus, when they make such a dumb accusation they already start losing me. Glad you realize it isn't a ripoff.
I can't disagree with professional animators but Family Guy has had some really great animation moments. Like the intro to "And Then There Were Fewer" with the panoramic scenes and orchestral music. It was really well done IMO and totally set the vibe for a murder mystery episode.
If you pay attention what is actually animated in the show, you notice how lazy and lackluster it truly is. The characters just stand still, blinking every few seconds and use the same 4-5 arm and body poses. It's just stiff and really insulting to watch, especially when they put up a single frame for an entire minute and think it's sufficient because the audio is funny enough.
I used to not mind Family Guy, but now that I've seen how graphic it has become, as well as how awful most of the characters have become and how unfunny the humour has become...I have lost my trust in it. So I praise those other animators who dislike it.
Great video, dude! Honestly, Family Guy is obscenely overhated. I really don't think it's as bad as people claim it is. The show isn't like how it used to be, but I'd say what is now is still pretty enjoyable. But that's just me. It's animation is simple, but that doesn't make it bad. People always complain about the cutaway gags, but they're actually quite brilliant in many ways. They're what made Family Guy unique from other cartoons. It's randomness may not be for everyone but it's one of the many things that made Family Guy so successful. It decided to break conventional story-telling and just tried to make you laugh. Even then, the cutaways are just quick pops. They're not that distracting (mostly). The main focus was still the plot. Family Guy is basically the stand-up comedy of adult animation. It just wants to make you laugh. That's probably the biggest reason why I love it. Family Guy definitely deserves the success it has. I believe it gets a lot of unjustified hate.
@@toonfridge96 why couldn’t i watch the original video of this? Did the original version of thin video get deleted? cause it says use a different device!
@@toonfridge96 And if I don't find if funny (not that I'm offended or lack a sense of appreciation) just, plainly don't find it funny. What else have I to gaze upon?
This video is misleading. The people who are hating on Family guy are not actually the animators, right? They are the creators and producers. It seems to me that "animators" would appreciate having more animated shows (i.e. more jobs). For example, so many great comic book artists have jumped between different comic book companies without hating on their previous job
I honestly think Family Guy season 1 to 8/9 are the best, those seasons I love to rewatch, and I have fond memories of watching seasons 8-13 as they were coming out. It's my go to show when I need something dumb to watch or need background noise
The tropes used by Family Guy that make it similar to The Simpsons can be traced through The Flintstones back to The Honeymooners, therefore Jackie Gleason 's Ralph Kramden is distantly related to Peter Griffin, and this actually gets pointed out in a few episodes.
Family Guy is the Law and Order of comedy for me. I go it because I know I'll be entertained for 22 minutes and maybe I'll even get a genuine laugh or two. I'm not invested in the characters and I wouldn't call it good, but I also don't understand the hate.
There were a couple of jokes from Family Guy making fun of how derivative they are of The Simpsons, like drunk Peter saying, "I know we say we didn't borrow a lot from The Simpsons but we borrowed A LOT from The Simpsons." Or Mr. Burns looking at Peter through a monitor, asking Smithers who he is, Smithers saying it's a character from a different show, and Mr. Burns says, "Simpson, you say?" Smithers responds with, "Pretty much, sir." That said, my biggest gripe with Family Guy is that the jokes form the characters, when it should be the other way around. Why does Quagmire hate Brian when he never did before? Why does Bonnie hate Joe when she never did before? Why does everyone hate Meg when they never did before? Why's Brian an atheist when he personally met God and Jesus? That's just scratching the surface.
Agreed. Even though old Family Guy was a lot like the Simpsons, I did like it a lot just like how I liked the Simpsons. Newer seasons are pretty hit or miss and don’t seem to have to same essence, idk the right word for it.
I honestly enjoy _Family Guy._ While it's far from perfect for many, _many_ reasons, it's still a dumb show that mostly doesn't take itself too seriously and wants to make people laugh, and I can respect that. My only complaint about the animation is that it looks less organic in later seasons. However, I can still see that there is still a lot of effort put into it, and it's pretty impressive that the characters are now almost always EXACTLY on-model (I know there's outsourcing involved, but there's no way I could even keep a character's exact look consistent without using cutout layer hierarchies.) Regardless of one's taste in animated cartoons, there's still a lot of work put into them, and while criticism is essential for improvement, we should still try to respect one another while communicating opinions about their work.
The first comment that actually supports family guy I feel like people shit on it just because so many people like it. I wil admit the story isn’t there but the main plot of family guys is to be funny and stupid and it works and if people don’t like the animation style look at South Park
Yeah this is why I love family guy, it just plays around with ideas connecting them in bizarre ways. I admit though, the 2014-2020 seasons sucked, same with the simpsons
i really enjoy family guy. it’s one of my favorite shows. but the way the majority of its characters turned out is upsetting. peter and lois became narcissistic parents that treat meg horribly. brian became a selfish douchebag that’s obsessed with money. chris is a pervert, although that isn’t surprising. at this point i feel like joe is the only one who is neither a pervert or a complete asshole
My favorite simpsons-FG moment is one of the Treehouses of horror, when Homer gets a cursed magical Hammock, this hammock has the power to clone a person, so there's a moment when the clones clon themselves and you can see Peter chilling in the background with the rest of the clones
As a game artist I will say you don't have to have complex animation or character designs to have a good story or a good show or game for that matter what matters is that you create something that gets people talking and it shows your view of the world

This, however, really isn’t a direct diss at MacFarlane. He really is a talented man, and while Family Guy isn’t my cup of Tea, American Dad most certainly is.

I don't think the problem was lazy animators. I think it's lazy writers.

"It's just mindless jokes but I like that ya know? At least it's not trying to get all preachy and up-its-own-ass with social commentary"
On the whole art style thing:
Family Guy's art style is pretty bland, but not actively bad.
South Park's art style is kinda cute, maybe that's why I watched it as a 5-year-old not understanding anything
@@youkendo lol.
Its basically a case of "the worse person you know just made a good point"
Family Guy clones are out. Rick and Morty clones are in.
You could say it's all a rip-off of Jackie Gleason's The Honeymooners.
Why is the simpsons and exception, their animation kinda began shit and by ur standards is still shit now
@@vamplovin The Simpsons has some really solid animation though, especially when compared to most of Family Guy.
@@vamplovin > *And those animators are mad that a show with less clean animation is more popular*
Meh, IMO this argument is baseless, and feels devoid of actually considering points that have been made - and is all too common a copout people make when something they like is criticized.
im no animator so feel free to disagree, but "unclean" isnt the word i'd use. every episode and bit i remember looked _fine_ animation wise, but low effort design wise.
Then why were the South park creators mad if you think the fact that the time spent on the animation is the issue And the jealousy

What makes Family guy so infuriating today as apposed to when it first came out was that Family Guy was originally about a normal family living in a messed up world. Now it’s just about a messed up family living in a messed up world. Because of this, it’s hard to really relate to the characters as a result.
Nah the Griffins were always messed up, but the main difference is that back then, they tried to get it together
Family Guy became hateful, alienating and unwatchable over time. Unfunny too.

Funny thing is that South Park uses a fairly advanced computer program to make its animation. They can crank out an episode within a week.

There's no way you'll find that in the cartoon industry nowadays unless it's Gumball or something.

I also think genre has narrowed. e.g. everything needs a long winded, long term mystery box. Gravity Falls popularised it but it came with codes and stuff so there was the choice to solve the mystery as it went along.
The issue other shows, like Steven Universe, have is that clues are withheld and, because the author likes to subvert expectations, the most subversive answer becomes the most obvious.

Exactly

@@vamplovin Well, to be fair, the scummy crap in John K's personal life isn't really relevant when it comes to his opinions on animation industry subjects, is it?
@@X0E12 ren and stimpy was great
it's, honestly in my opinion probably cause of how offensive, and way too dramatic it can be sometimes to some people.
Speaking of good cartoons… ;)
@@mauriciovillamar2951 Me either, honestly not gonna lie sometimes when the dark comedy is done the right way imo I actually find it hilarious.
@@mauriciovillamar2951 ofcourse its offensive, because its meant to be and thats why people find it funny, its fine to be insulted or hurt by it but theres no intent of actually insulting anyone and its just making jokes out of things, dont you think its abit too sensitive to be offended by something like that?
Family guy would be funny if most of the cut away gags were removed.
That's the only thing that makes it funny. Without cutaways its just a worse Simpsons
@ oh
Sadly family guy did set a standard for lazy animation after it switched to full digital. It's very stilted and when people talk their hands are down at their sides like they're standing at attention
Futurama also made fun of Family Guy in an episode where they had a Family Guy calendar saying “12 laughs a year”
Implying that Family Guy is only funny 12 times in a season
Funny because Futurama never made me laugh.
I loved futurama… to each their own though :)
@@OmarStar803 yeah because it's more like a emotional approach and comedy rather than unfunny jokes and random gags.
@@connorcornwall1404 the randomness makes Family Guy the perfect pothead comedy alongside Rick & Morty you don't have to know anything about the characters just know some crazy-ish stuff is going down. Now that I think about all of Adult Swim is pothead comedy
@@OmarStar803 what's the point of comedy when you already expected it?
It's like one of those knock knock joke, you already knew the outcome and it wasn't very surprising and funny anymore.it can apply to Family Guy when they do repetitive shit that are mostly violence and remarks about how terrible is history or being self-aware about certain things.
The way to love this show is dont expect any sense. I know that what I'm watching is simply chaotic and hilarious, and this is why I love so much family guy. There aren't other shows like family guy
In the crossover you mentioned, they chose to show nearly every character who was shown to be copied from the Simpsons while the lawyer was stating that whole thing.
The judge was Fred Flintstone.
@@CoyoteSeven Huh?
John K was right, literally every adult cartoon now looks very simple and is borderline the same
I really think the pedophile who made Cans without Labels should get off his high horse.
They know they fucking screwed up when even a pedophile knows that stuff like this is repetitive.
Who cares, there fun to watch idk why people are making it so deep

The biggest thing Family Guy lacks when compared to the greats like The Simpsons, King of the Hill, Futurama (and even some South Park) is the element of heart & soul. That and a lack of truly good story-telling. Albeit funny at times the show feels vacuous and empty, with way too many bits and jokes hinging on pop culture & being crass for the sake of it and not enough on the plot or the characters themselves. Honestly the first 3 seasons were the best and have the most memorable episodes, after that is when things went downhill IMO.
the first three seasons are like a different show
I dont think family guy is a ripoff of the simpsons, every character has their own personality and the simpsons is more of a wholesome show, where i personally dont get much laughs 💀
i dont think its really a ripoff ether. the biggest similarity is that they both middle class family. and they consist of a mum dad.
Me too.

I think early family guy is a geniunely pleasent to watch show while modern family guy is just kinda a meme.

It’s hard to create an original animation when the simpsons have literally done everything
ignoring the many many ways you easily could
It's corporations. Family Guy worked. Therefore the formula proved to be a profitable one, so why change it?
Burns says, "Simpson, you say?" Smithers responds with, "Pretty much, sir."
That said, my biggest gripe with Family Guy is that the jokes form the characters, when it should be the other way around.
Being strictly on model is a bad thing. It makes it look cheap and copy pasted if anything…
i really enjoy family guy. it’s one of my favorite shows. but the way the majority of its characters turned out is upsetting. peter and lois became narcissistic parents that treat meg horribly. brian became a selfish douchebag that’s obsessed with money. chris is a pervert, although that isn’t surprising. at this point i feel like joe is the only one who is neither a pervert or a complete asshole
@Emmy Exactly
@Emmy I do too. It’s just upsetting how much they downgraded
@Emmy True
American Dad! > Family Guy
It's just clear that the creativity is gone by now. Family guy was OK early on but then it really did become a kind of parody of the Simpsons.
My favorite simpsons-FG moment is one of the Treehouses of horror, when Homer gets a cursed magical Hammock, this hammock has the power to clone a person, so there's a moment when the clones clon themselves and you can see Peter chilling in the background with the rest of the clones
South Park did the best parody(s) of family guy in my opinion.
I guess Mike Judge didn't hate Family Guy that much after all... since there was cutaway gag involving Peter hanging out with Bevis & Butthead!
Honestly found the looping gifs super annoying.
As a game artist I will say you don't have to have complex animation or character designs to have a good story or a good show or game for that matter what matters is that you create something that gets people talking and it shows your view of the world
