    Thanks to this video I was able to swap out my lead battery in my Ryobi ZT480ex with Ampere Time 12V(12.8V) 100Ah liFePO4 batteries. That blue wire I had to reattach when sliding the batteries back in. Couldn't reach the connection with the batteries in. Also forgot to put the meatal rack on top of the batteries the first time I put them back. The long bolt wouldn't in the middle of the batteries wouldn't catch the thread. Had to leave it lose. My new batteries are charging now with the original charger. Thank you for making this video.

      Did it only take one battery?

    I'm so glad that I bumped into this video (and others) about battery issues in the Ryobi electric Zero Turn mower! I've had mine for 3 seasons and am headed into a 4th. Recently, my display has been informing me of ever decreasing maximum charge. On my most recent trip to tow the garbage can down our 1/4mile lane, charge was indicated at 65% immediately after unplugging the charger. However, the 1/2 mile trip (blade off) was completed without problem . . . and no change to the battery charge, still 65%. To make a long story shorter, after pulling the batteries out for individual tests and finding no problems - this video (or another one) revealed that the charge read-out instrument may not "tell the truth". So I've put the machine back together . . . and now the read out is showing 100% charge! I'll be watching for actual symptoms of battery failure now . . . and not simply depend on the instrument read out. (PS: Read out says I've put on 49 hours of use over the 3 seasons - including garbage runs every week throughout the years. So if the batteries are actually still OK, I'll be feeling pretty good. I have always tried to stop mowing at about 50% as a battery saving measure.)

    Ryobi should have stacked these batteries laterally, so they can be pulled one at a time from under the seat. They should have never used thread lock on screws that thread into back nut clips. That makes no since to do so when it breaks all the tabs. To Ryobi's credit, they did use basic standardized fasteners, and they included a small bag of tools that fit almost everything.

    FYI that connector on the Blue Wire is called an AMP connector, it is NOT "proprietary", it is used by virtually every single after market HID headlight kit and I freaking love them, holds securely but easily removed when needed.

    Thanks for the vid! I'd rather watch a regular guy for step by step instruction than a professionally made video. I think my charger is bad (LED light on charger doesn't turn on, and the light at the charging port just flashes quickly) so I'm charging them individually and getting them load tested. Just in case it is the batteries.

    I just replaced the 4 batteries in my 1 year old mower like this one. Ryobi sent 4 new replacement batteries under the 1 year battery warranty. and only just barely. After charging it showed 70 % and running for 10 minutes dropped it to 30 %, so doing very poorly. Only addition I would make is to remove the 4 screws that hold the charging port. Then the plug comes out and the small 2 wires that need to be disconnected are easy to get to and will sit outside the charging o\port hole and out of the way. Thanks for making the video-it was a big help. John in Florence OR

      Did you have to send the entire mower to Ryobi? Or did they just send you batteries?

    • @jobgreaves
      @jobgreaves 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Replicant9900 The Ryobi tech said I could package and send the mower for them to replace the batteries but that didn’t sound like a feasible option to me. I’ve done many similar kinds of repairs and the video helped see that it was doable.

    • @Replicant9900
      @Replicant9900 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jobgreaves - Right, but Ryobi agreed to send you replacement batteries without sending them the mower? I really don't want to spend $1k on new batteries after only 2 years. They should have lasted 10 years with proper maintenance.

      Lol 10 years on lead lololol maybe of use only use 10% of rated capacity. 3 passes and park it...

      @@davidlarson1369 - I'm basing this on my 10 years of wheelchair repair experience, and having replaced literally hundreds of Gel and AGM batteries. In wheelchairs, AGMs last about a year of heavy use, that's used all day every day, and probably being charged at least twice per day. With a mower, it's only getting used once a week, optimally. And if I I don't deplete them to less than 50%, yes, they should last a good many years.

    Can anyone please tell me the exact type/style of battery I need to get that will fit properly in the tray and the posts are in the correct position? Where I should get them and do you recommend a better(hopefully longer lasting) type of battery? Thank you to anyone who can help me.

    Thank you for the video, i was struggling to pull them out, pulled like hell, no movement. Didn’t know you have to take the middle one out 😁
    How do you clean the mower? My dealer said only dry wash with very little water in cloth. Really? I can’t wash my 5000€ lawn mower with the garden hose?

    You do NOT need to disconnect the first white (not gray) wire. They are now sent glued together!

    Does anyone know if changing out the lead acid for lithium requires you buy a new charger or is the original suitable
