@@jackanddan If the bad battery wasn't putting out the cca you didn't have all the power, amps is current that gives the motor to the tractor power, you will probably notice an increase in power next winter when you're plowing as plowing puts more strain on the tractors motor than cutting the grass does
@@Golden.FishTank for sure we’ll see what happens it definitely lasted way longer even Longer than I did when we first bought it so that made us think that the batteries defective in the first place we did a whole video on it and that’ll be coming out in another week or two like I said pretty sure it was defective from the gecko we just didn’t realize it….I don’t really mind the $240 as long as it works right for a few years now we’ll see what happens hopefully there’s no issues anytime soon would you love this thing that is great specially with the snow and the leaves I’m glad I had Dwayne’s health is a great guy
My synopsis is this: perhaps Ryobi doesn't have the best battery management system in there to properly desulfate the batteries and monitor the depth of charge. Oh well. Seeing you change the battery for $250 gives me hope as an electrical engineer who's built an electric snowmobile. My biggest hold-up on these was the ease of maintenance, but you've clearly stepped up and are leading the charge on the common battery issue. I'm all-in on a purchase of one now. Thank you so much! Although, I will be buying a desulfator ;)
And additionally, like you've said in other comments, $250 for a new battery is a fine cost. Considering the cost of gas, the benefits of electric (quiet!), and how much you'll get out of it (and have already got out of it), I wouldn't be bothered by that cost at all.
We have another video coming out about how it did but I’ll give you a spoiler it actually works better than it did when we bought it so we are truly thinking that this battery might’ve been defective upon purchase hard to prove but we cut the grass with the blade on for 2.2 hours it’s still at half the battery left on the display but Jack finally got bored and gave up ha ha Ha and that was with the mulching blade on and thick grass because we hadn’t cut it for a while….So for now we are pretty happy with it not thrilled that we had to spend this much after a little over two years but still hopefully it fixes the problem yes people have talked about this di sulfonation we really don’t know much about it and we have friends that are mechanics including Dwayne that was in this video he said he didn’t either I went to the battery place they said they didn’t really know much about it either so wasn’t really confident messing around with any of that stuff however we’ll see what the future holds
Thank you so much for your follow up coming up about how it did actually we think that one battery might’ve initially been bad for the beginning because now it’s actually working better than it did when we Initially bought it there are lots of people who have made comments about the sulfonation and I’ll kind of things like that we’re not quite sure what we’re gonna do but hopefully we can go another year or two without any problems and then we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it
This is awesome Dan. I've been on the fence about buying a Ryobi mower. I've loved your videos about the experience that you've had with yours and after a lot of reading it seems that battery issues are by far the biggest problem. It doesn't help that they're not available through the channels that Ryobi recommends, so you have to both figure out the problem, and then find the solution. Knowing what the battery is now (a 100aH wheelchair battery) makes it a lot easier to take the plunge. No, I don't want to have to replace batteries, but knowing that I can, and that a replacement is available is a big relief. Thanks again, and thanks to Jack too for the "after" video testing.
Any lead acid battery that meets these (4) requirements will work: 1) equal Ah - amp hours 2) Deep cycle 3) AGM - absorbed glass mat 4) dimensions that will fit in the battery tray. If you're not replacing all the batteries then Ah need to match the old batteries. Personally, if I need to change more than one battery or they are 3+ years old I would replace all 4 batteries at the same time. If you replace all 4 batteries all 4 Ah need to match but don't have be the same as the old ones. Higher equals longer run time but if 50 Ah batteries get your yard done it would be cheaper to buy. Just fyi, when you finish you should have some reserve left, 50% is ideal but up to 80% depth of discharge is ok. Deep cycle batteries are made to run down (deep) but running them until they're completely dead week after week would be hard on them. AGM absorbed glass mat as the name implies, the liquid electrolyte is absorbed and thus it's spill proof. I would say AGM is required if you have hills or very bumpy lawn, and still recommended if flat but you could get away without. There are also gel batteries for the same purpose.
Very cool guys 👍👍👍 I miss riding on my grandfathers old ride on mowers! One of my favorite things as a kid to do! Always fun watching you both! Have a great week brothers 😁
I figured I would watch this after watching your snow plow video. Great to see you quiet that annoying beeper as well as the fluid change. As far as the batteries go, two years in is pretty scary to think about needing replacement considering there are four of them at 250 a pop. Other video's I have watched today mentioned trying to avoid going below 50% of life before recharging to maximize battery lifespan. Also I saw the suggestion for adding a power pulse module and battery saver. But those two combined add another 200$.
Well as we said in this video and the follow up that we did....it's been really the only issue and we think it was defective from the get go....we will be doing continual update videos on it and after we get back from vacation most likely a big one seeing as we have a lot of work waiting for us in our yard.
So far seems to be working pretty good we have another video coming up it actually seems to be working better than it did when we initially bought it over two years ago so yes this battery may have been affected from the get-go we doubt Ryobi will care about that but we will send them this video like we have all of our videos and we’ll see how things go hopefully we don’t have any more problems for a couple years at least😀😀👍👍

Hey guys, the wireless battery tester is cool. Oh, so it's not fully charging. That is great you found a place in Cleveland that sells the battery and cheaper is always a plus. LOL. Yeah, that would suck if you had to replace them yearly. Nice job replacing the battery and definitely a good idea to wear gloves Jack. FW and have a great day.
This was fun. We seen a riding mower in Lowe's that takes a whole bunch of lithium cordless drillI batteries. I wonder how it would stack up against the Ryobi's setup. I'm not sure why I love batteries so much, but I do😆. Hopefully this fixed the problem. Can't wait for the follow up on this one👍.
It's not a great engineering marvel that's for sure....we found a lot out going through this....but we do think lead is better than lithium for a rider....especially for plowing....we'll see what happens....
Thanks for the guide. My Ryobi's duration of mowing has severely dropped this year. it is only a year and a half old. I do with it used Lithium ion batters instead. I feel like I could get more for less weight out of them. heard the new systems are lithium.
That main battery disconnect at 1:41, do you know what size Anderson connector that is? I want to build something to tap power off of one when I order my mower. It should have some model number on it or at least an amperage rating. (Probably SB120 or SB175)

good day, i also have one of these Ryobi rm480ex mowers, recently i noticed that when placed key to on it flashed 48v then goes to 39.9 volts i have removed all batteries and first check voltage of each all over 13.0 volts. Second placed each battery on a 12v charger, all batteries charged, the tested each battery independently using Ancel BA301 tester all tested good 100% charged. looking for next steps to try. thanks
there are some folks that did videos on this same issue and you can find them on youtube....apparently the cables can have issues and they have replaced them, but this has not happened to us.....yet....
Thanks for the video…. Looking forward to more because I plan on buying an electric riding mower this summer. Also want to use it to plow snow too. We only get 2 to 4” of snow at a time and always light and dry. Would be ideal for plowing with this mower.
I have the 75 amp hour version of this mower. It's been great. Silly question but, if I replace the 75 amp hour batteries with 100 amp hour batteries I would be updating the mower to the 100 amp hour version, right?
would assume so but not sure if any other upgrades would need to be made....honestly if you call RYOBI's tech support they could probably tell you....like we said in the videos they were pretty helpful but they just didn't have the batteries in stock....we are glad we found our own because they were cheaper and it's still working awesome....we'll continue to do follow ups every months or so for sure. Thanks for watching
I have a question, what do you use to charge each battery? They seem to be in sleep mode, and I have tried "mini charges". That has not worked. It has sat dormant all winter, I need to know how to jump start each battery, what can I use? I have regular car batteries, and an electric Chevy Spark car. Will either of those work? Thanks for any help you can provide
there may be a issue with your connections or your charger.....we did a video about cleaning the connections a few months ago and it's in our playlist if you scroll down to the video about "tips to improve your RYOBI's charging" it could also be your charger....RYOBI customer service is pretty good about answering questions, just not about getting batteries....since this video we have not had any problems and have found a abundance of places to find these batteries for even cheaper....good luck
Hey thanks for video!! have a question so I have one with 75ah if one of mine is bad can I replace that one with 100 ah or will I have to replace all of them to 100ah battery ? thanks !
Honestly we're not sure....RYOBI will probably tell you a 75....however, many people have commented that they bought the 75 and used it for a few years and then replaced them all with 100's and so from a cost standpoint they said they felt like they got a better deal. so far ours has been working well and we have done a few updates and will continue to, but we definitely feel that the battery was a dud from the beginning and hopefully we get may more years out of it before any other issues arise!

Hello I have the 42inc and now when I plug to charge my charger flash red wont charge . What could be problem ? Thanks
there may be a issue with your connections or your charger.....we did a video about cleaning the connections a few months ago and it's in our playlist if you scroll down to the video about "tips to improve your RYOBI's charging" it could also be your charger....RYOBI customer service is pretty good about answering questions, just not about getting batteries....since this video we have not had any problems and have found a abundance of places to find these batteries for even cheaper....good luck
@@jackanddan Thank you!! I will check that video out!
Hey thanks for video!! have a question so I have one with 75ah if one of mine is bad can I replace that one with 100 ah or will I have to replace all of them to 100ah battery ? thanks !
Honestly we're not sure....RYOBI will probably tell you a 75....however, many people have commented that they bought the 75 and used it for a few years and then replaced them all with 100's and so from a cost standpoint they said they felt like they got a better deal. so far ours has been working well and we have done a few updates and will continue to, but we definitely feel that the battery was a dud from the beginning and hopefully we get may more years out of it before any other issues arise!
great sharing how to good thing wearing gloves
