    Good thorough right-on information. Three newer MACs in this house the past year. First son wanted the MBP 13” Base 8/256 because of the fan, slightly brighter screen, and (believe it or not) Touch Bar. I recommended the MBA with 16GB (I had a budget, and the MBP itself put the computer over that, but that’s what he wanted). He does video and photography so for SSD space I got him an external 2TB. Second son listened to me, a MBA M1 with 8/512 (APPLE refurbished, no 16GB available). Just general use and the internal extra storage just made things easy. And me, ungraded from a MBP 15” 2015 to a MBP 14” Base model. It was a very good used deal with 8 cycles on the battery, not a lot more than an upgraded MBP 13” and cheaper than a new upgraded MBA M2). Wish I would have gotten the same 1TB SSD as my old computer, but bought a couple NVMe drives with enclosures. All these will be in use for many years, my oldest son may want to upgrade at some time because of his FCP and Photoshop use, but even now it does the work fine. The MBP 14” is just amazing in use compared to my old MBP (no more waiting for adjustments editing photos!) and the mini-LED display is gorgeous.

    That’s exactly the one I am considering: 16/256. That config serves me well on an older mbp. Even comparing this m1 air to say xps13 or lenovo offerings, it is way cheaper especially when you factor in screen upgrades, which is mandatory on the thinkpad because the lower end is so awful. Plus you never know how good/bad heat and fan noise will be on those

    • @Tech-geeky
      @Tech-geeky ปีที่แล้ว

      However, cast your mind back to Intel Mac's and we'd be OK with that... How times change. We live in the 'here, and now' moments.. and choose to forget the past.. I know Apple is trying to keep compatibility close by keeping Rosetta 2 around for x86. there is a reason why they kept it round longer, because they underestimated how time consuming it would be by some developers to transition (technical difficulties, or just choose to go go there)
      Look at Mac OS Catalina and Apple dropping 32-bit support.... Many developers didn't wanna upgrade their stuff, or couldn't because they relied on 32-bit plugins they depended on.
      The same here with M1,, even worse, because Rosetta 2 won't help you with kernel extensions.. drivers .. those low-level stuff must run native... so there is more problems than if helps.. On the plus, everyone likes the performance and battery life, but that's a major quibble over getting your own software to work. If your software doesn't work and plugin issues, then its basically an expensive piece of aluminum..

    Obviously watched the video to see. Basically a baseline MBP 14” is $1450, 16gb/512 is the base. The air is $800 8gb/256. If I were to buy a refurb air with upgraded 16gb/512(they don’t just have the RAM) is another )400 so then you’re comparing an M1 air @ $1200 vs M1pro 14” @ $1450. I think the extra $250 ends up being worth it. Speakers/display/ports. I ran chrome (5tabs) and Firefox (5tabs)and an app that ate almost close to the chrome, and I was hovering at 10gb used. Which was an eye opener for me.

    Dont agree on the RAM.
    8 VS 16?
    The correct answer is: if you have to ask = 8GB. The correct correct answer is = it's a fanless machine. If you absolutely need 16GB for any given scenario you are doing it wrong. (Bullshit like running Docker type dev on it) If you're seriously worrying about it, get something with a fan and a non-ARM CPU and it will come with 16GB. But the whole good deal thing is gone (in my country at least) if you upgrade to a 16GB (it's like 300 bucks more which is nuts)

    • @MannyRataul
      @MannyRataul  ปีที่แล้ว

      Disagree, I have a 16gb variant and using applications that use more cpu power and memory do not affect my thermal performance. Don’t believe me? Go and look at a comparison between the Air and Pro and you will be surprised how well the thermal cooling on the air is. I agree that the deal is no longer ideal with added ram, but you are still getting a substantial increase in performance and less Memory Swap which is a common issue among 8gb versions.

    What do you think, would it be better to take a 14-inch macbook pro on M1, if there is a financial possibility, or shouldn't overpay?

    • @Mattrycky
      @Mattrycky ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I’ve actually been researching this a lot lately. For context, I have a base model m1 MacBook Air.
      It depends on what you need it for.
      General productivity and the occasional small video edit using an optimised software like Final Cut Pro, then the base is fine and performs way above where it has any right to.
      However, if you are doing regular video editing, photo editing AND streaming, screen recording whilst streaming etc, then you should look at the M1 Pro.
      So the question is: what do you think your future needs will be?
      One word of caution: because the base model air is so capable, it makes you explore possibilities.
      Whether you get the air or M1 Pro get 16gb because that will protect you.
      A 16gb m1 air will do most things an amateur requires.

    • @MannyRataul
      @MannyRataul  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the 14 inch MacBook Pro only comes with the M1X chip, not the standard M1. Those are workstation grade laptops so if you work requires, it would be a solid buy. Financially a windows based laptop will be cheaper with more options, but if you are used to the Mac OS then that is the way to go. Do not overpay for a Pro if you don’t intend on doing intensive work.

    • @Mattrycky
      @Mattrycky ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The M1 Pro comes with either the M1 Pro chip or M1 Max chip.
      If you there the M1 Max chip you’ll know you need it.
      So it goes m1, M1 Pro, M1 Max (then m1 ultra only available in the max studio)

    • @MannyRataul

      Absolutely, for $799 that is a more than capable machine for what you are going to utilize it for. If you search around on TH-cam there are many videos showing off the power of the M1 with just 8gb of ram. The issues you will run into with 8gb is with multitasking (and im talking like 3-4 programs at a time) and the SSD substitution for Ram. The constant use of read write of the SSD in replacement for RAM will significantly reduce the life span of the SSD and is more likely to fail at an early stage. But with your work use scenarios, you will not run into such problems. I hope this helps!

I use it for my job as a full stack web developer and even the 2012 one sufficed until last year thanks to upgrades and maintenance. Even now my Mom uses the old MBP for web browsing and msoffice usage, for which even a 10 year old computer can work with some workarounds for software updates (thanks oclp) and proper maintenance. Most people who just need a computer for a few specific tasks would be fine with older hardware.
