    It's like playing chess and telling your partner what your moves are going to be. They know what you're going to do, but they can't stop it. That's boss.

    • @kirklandau2826
      @kirklandau2826 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well it's not like he narrated every single little detail of everything, which would be impossible. And often he says what his move is right after he did it or simultaneously. But the analogy still partly applies, somewhat. It's a matter of the difference between knowing what the moves are, versus knowing what they entail, *why* they are done, the ultimate purpose and strategy behind the moves. The people Keenan is rolling with don't understand Jiu-Jitsu on the level that Keenan does, so he can tell them some information on what he's doing but they can't quite deduce his next moves or figure out a foil or counter to his plans because they don't fully grasp what his overall plans are. Sometimes they do foil parts of his plans by defending some aspect of what he's doing. Sometimes him announcing what he was attempting was indeed the cause of that. But like a chess grandmaster, Keenan was confident that he has alternative ways around their defenses, or counters to their counters. He even intentionally plays off of that at times - baits his opponent to defend a move that he's announcing, and then uses that anticipated defense as part of his plan to get them into even deeper trouble. Sometimes it's all part of his master plan. Other times his plans get foiled but his mastery of BJJ is such that he can instantly devise new plans on the spot.

    I greatly appreciate this improvisational, action-reaction based teaching presentation much more than a static, conceptual or specific technical lesson. I like what Keenan said about caging the hips. I do this a lot and don’t feel the need to pressure punish everyone on bottom for no reason. Great video. Thank you!

    When you announce what your'e going to do and how they'll react and it goes down just like that. Blackbelt: Jedi Level: disheartening mindfuck XD

    • @kirklandau2826
      @kirklandau2826 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I mean, it shouldn't be disheartening considering *who* it is though. These people know they're rolling with one of the greatest BJJ practitioners on the planet. If anything it's encouraging because it shows a glimpse of the level of technique and strategy behind what he's doing - Keenan is demonstrating that he wins through learnable, practicable skill/knowledge, rather than some innate physical superiority in strength or speed

    Pretty cool to see these older students (I'm old too) getting in their and doing their best. So many people their age are sitting on the couch playing with the flicker....but these savages are coming home from a full day of work and putting on their gi to get beat down. Good for them! Have to respect that. When you know your time has passed to probably become world class level but you show up anyway.

      @@good6894 It's crazy how the contrast of that showed how minimally he's even exerting himself during the rest of the roll. His next-level mastery of technique and strategy is such that he can just calmly, almost lazily, control and submit people who are trying to squirm, explode, or use maximum strength at nearly every turn, while Keenan is not even close to matching their level of intensity or physical exertion despite dominating. And then he shows that at any moment if his relaxed use of strategy or technique isn't quite enough, he can simply up his intensity level and find more explosive solutions to pretty much any scenario.

    It does kinda give me hope as a lowly blue belt to hear the thought processes of a black belt while rolling with various skill levels. Sometimes it feels like the higher belts are using some sort of magic that is just beyond the comprehension of us mortals, but really they are just seeing things several steps ahead and using more refined details.
