Whoa you waited that long to check the air filter! I still think u r awesome. This whole xj550 series is fantastic. Thank you for sharing your knowledge
HAH I BOUGHT A 79 FIREBIRD FROM A GUY THAT HE COULDN'T GET TO RUN RIGHT, IT ATE A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF GAS AND FOULED THE PLUGS.THE AIR FILTER LOOKED EXACTLY THE SAME,LOL. ANOTHER GREAT VIDEO. NICE CX500. I'M LOOKING FOR ONE OF THOSE.(CX500) CAN'T WAIT TO SEE MORE.
Sometimes when people put aftermarket exhaust and intakes on their bikes, the bike runs lean, so they increase the size of the carb jets. Problem is they don't do it right, and increase by way too much. It sounds like your jets might be a little too big, letting in too much fuel. First, research what your jets are at stock size, then open up the carbs and see which ones you have in there, and compare. While you are in there also ensure that your floats are not sticking for some reason
Its a lot easier when you jiggle the airbox back a bit, there is a perfect amount of room to slide it in and out. Luckily for us, the boots are in good shape, manhandling a set of stiff boots can get pretty tough...
Ive only tried it once and I found that it weakens the fibers. In a pinch I will blow them out with compressed air, but they only cost $13 for a new one so why not
First off, what bike are we talking about here? Is this a problem which has recently developed, or has it always been running rich since you got it? Ever done any service to the carbs?
Haha yeah it might even be original, funny thing is the bolts on the airbox were new and shiny, so recently someone inspected the filter and determined that it was good enough to use.
You managed to get those boots on the airbox side apart from the carbs with increadible ease. My '85 XJ ewas an absolute b!tch to get off & fitted back in place. Sounding way better then when you got it.
I had a float needle problem in my carbs and long story short is my engine and air intake flooded. The air filter was completely soaked in gas. Is it salvageable?
Hey dude. I have an xj 550 maxim. i just installed a set of emgo tapered exhausts. it runs fine but i was wondering if it needs to be rejetted. please let me know dude. i love your videos.
Typically if it runs fine with good power and you are not fouling plugs, your mixture is probably ok. An aftermarket exhaust is not usually cause for rejetting unless the backpressure is significantly different. At the end of my jet adjustment video I show how to do a mixture test throughout the RPM range to be extra sure that you dont need to rejet
Another question: i have 4 into 2 exhaust system. The left exhaust gets out more smoke, i dont know the colour but it might be gray. The right exhaust is making less smoke. What should i tell my mechanic to do? The bike is old and with many miles.
I realised i have a problem and searched this vid. My bike also stalls when i put choke on fast. If i keep reving it and put choke on, it stays on. I only start with choke on winter, otherwise it starts and gets like flooded. So i have to press the starter button for 5 seconds until it starts again. My air filter is in good condition. My exhaust is sport type, empty inside. What should i tell to my mechanic to do to make it run less rich?
twinbadger1 Well bikes that have problems running while hot can have a number of different causes. You need to determine what is failing in reference to air, fuel, spark, or compression, and it could be any of the 4. Sometimes cracks in the boots or vacuum leaks become larger when heated up causing an air intake problem. Sometimes a failing ignition coil will also have cracks which cause spark interruptions when warmed up, and thats a spark problem. Vapor lock occurs when a fuel line warms up from running too close to the motor, and thats a fuel problem. And head gasket leaks can get worse with heat causing compression loss. So warm your bike up and check for these causes,a nd see if you can isolate the issue
Same issue . But I replaces the intake boot to the heads. And clean with carb cleaner the out side . And it has the vacuum from #2 intake to the peckcock. What's that about

Nah keep the float heights the same for the time being, if you get fuel starvation issues for some reason you can adjust then
3 months ago carbs were cleaned and sincronized. The thing with the choke is like this for 2 years. i have a 97 yamaha xj 600 diversion

Hmm as I recall they werent too difficult to adjust
How did you come out on the float height adjustment on this? Keep up the good work - love your vids.
On this bike, the wet method. I have videos up demonstrating the wet and the dry method on my channel
I love these videos! They're great!
Yeah, we are collaborating on it, its his idea to do the red/black cobra theme and hes got a lot of input on it
You again are the man!
I missed the air filter spot. Where’s it at?

nice
so i want to get a 4 to 1 exhust and stage three jets. am i going to need to rest the float hights and if so how do i figure out the hights?

Awesome! i just watched your entire video about jet adjustment. Thanks for your quick reply!
I am only running on one cylinder after cleaning carbs. Could it be floats?

It took me 45 minutes to remove my carbs
Mine was sitting for 25 years, and today it started!

Indeed
Thumbs up!
no prob good luck if you want to see a video of me tearing into the carbs on your specific bike, check out the "carbs leaking?" video on my channel
Thanks!
I have a 81 650 maxim runs good until it warms up. Carbs are clean too. Any idea?
twinbadger1 Any modifications to the bike?
Just cosmetic. Motor is stock as fare as I know.

If you have a reusable air filter then its probably ok. If you have a paper filter I would probably replace it
aight thanks
thanks, it was a direct chat moment:)
Keek the green and add some white military stars.!!!
Y don't you trie washing air filters ?
how do you set the float height?
I have an 81 maxim 550 that will only run if the choke is on. And quits as soon as you turn the choke off.
OK what have you done so far to fix it?
Same issue . But I replaces the intake boot to the heads. And clean with carb cleaner the out side . And it has the vacuum from #2 intake to the peckcock. What's that about
Clean those carbs. On the inside
Im going to do something like that to the xt550
Because its made of paper
Could be!
what year of bike is this???
81
good day friend asked me if have a video of how to put the time a machine yamaha xj 550 1981 or as arming greetings
@mrmaxstorey Lmao, figures I'd get the stiff ones.
Iv washed the paper ones befor you just don't let it sit in water
Does anyone know of a good video or dicription no how to tune these engines as they need a special ycis tool to tun the engine up
