Trying PENANG FOOD for the First Time! - Top 5 Penang Street Foods

  • Trying Penang Food for the first time was filling! We walked George Town Penang to try the Top 5 Penang street foods… we even made it to the famous Anthony Bourdain Asam Laksa spot: Air Itam Laksa.
Our first stop on the Malaysia street food tour was the oldest restaurant in Penang: Hameediyah Restaurant. Known as the best Nasi Kandar in Penang, I got to try Ayam Bawang and Murtabak. Although this wasn’t technically a street food, it was some of the best food in Penang I’ve had so far.
Next up we try Penang hawker food when we try Mee Goreng at Bangkok Lane in Penang Malaysia. This traditional hokkien street food surprised me with a nutty, peanut flavor. I think the protein inside was intestines, so it’s a good thing I’m not squeamish! No Penang food vlog would be complete without trying, and enjoying, some noodles.
This next dish is special to me. The famous Anthony Bourdain Asam Laksa spot in Air Itam at the bottom of Kek Lok Si Temple. This was easily my favorite food in Penang and the most authentic bowls of Malaysian food I’ve ever eaten. Served from a small Malaysia street food vendor, Air Itam Laksa is fast, cheap and delicious.
We couldn’t leave George Town Penang without trying the best cendol from Penang Road Teow Chew Cendol. We met up with our friend Fais we met at the best restaurant in George Town and he showed us the local way to order cendol. You don’t have to stand outside in line like everyone else to get this Malaysian street food. In fact, there is an indoor restaurant where you can sit and be served! Trying the best cendol in Penang was a pleasant surprised and I liked it a lot more than ABC in Kuala Lumpur. And guess what?! Ryan was even trying Penang food for the first time when he agreed to try cendol!
All in all, this Penang Street Food Tour was a complete success. Besides not finding Roti Canai, we were able to try the top 5 Penang Malaysia Street Foods all in one day. Leave a comment down below and let us know what your favorite street food in Penang is. Did we try some of your favorite Penang food? Thanks for watching guys, we will see you in the next video. Seeya!

In case you haven't figured it out; on ordering drinks at mamaks and most Malaysian restaurants:
    1. Tea (Teh), coffee (kopi), nescafe and Milo are all served hot with sweetened condense milk.
    2. If you add an "O" a the end, it means no milk. Teh-O is simply tea without milk but they will throw in a ton of sugar.
    3. If you add "Kosong" (empty/zero) at the end - No sugar.
So, a Teh-O-Kosong, means tea without milk and sugar.
    4. If you want a cold version just add the word "ice" at the end, such as "Teh Ice" or "Kopi Ice".
    5. If you want your coffee or tea to be stronger or thicker, in the case of Milo, you add the word "Kau" (pronounced Cow)
    5. Most mamak and Indian restaurants serve fresh milk on request. The milk is usually from cows but some do have goat's milk too. To order this just add the words "susu lembu" (cow's milk) or "susu kambing" (goat' milk). Try "Teh Susu Lembu". Lovely stuff.
    6. We love mixing our drinks, so there is coffee with tea (i think it's called cham), Neslo: Nescafe and Milo (Malaysian version of a Mocha), or try our soya-chincau and laici-susu pekat (laici with sweetened condense milk),
    Have Fun

If you want them to add condensed milk you can say "C" (chi) so for milk tea is teh c peng (cold), suam (warm sometimes it could be hot as hell)

I do hit all these spots if I can when in in Penang. Nice video and, as a local, it's nice to see someone appreciate our food as much as we do. There are other places fit nasi kandar and roti - even in KL - but Hameediyah is also good for their mee goreng and murtabak kambing (mutton). You only missed the pisang goreng lorry in Tanjung Bungah.

U could find roti canai all over Malaysia, just find any 'Mamak' stalls. And cendol is actually the name for the green pandan noodle but somehow we also call the whole dessert cendol. Lastly the coffee taste u mentioned most probably comes from the palm sugar syrup. Glad that u r enjoying Malaysian food.

Well, thanks!! Funny story, growing up my parents were great cooks and always let me invite friends over for dinner. BUT, in order for my friends to be allowed to eat with us they had to try something they have never tried before. We were like 10 years old and my dad was feeding us octopus and anchovies and other weird stuff to try before dinner haha 😂 So I was kinda raised to be this way. Ryan on the other hand has always been rebellious with food... he would NEVER eat and try feeding his food to his dog 😂 We are very different in that way. Much love! -Stacia

The fragrance in the chendol is from pandan or screwpine leaves. The taste is palm sugar (gula melaka), sugar with coconut cream (santan) added.

You chose the right Nasi Kandar restaurant, not just in Penang but probably the whole of Malaysia. Hamediyah (not sure if i spelt it right?) is the bomb. Top class! Probably the best food I have eaten in all of Asean.

DeathByVlog Btw if you are in Vietnam, try the mangosteen and prawn salad. Its a dessert. Also try their beef noodle soup. I believe there is a shop that Bourdain used to have it. He has it with Obama once there as well. Alongside Nasi Kandar and Pad Thai, among the best food you can get over here.

Loved the intro! Truth be told in Penang when it comes to food one can hardly go wrong for the simple reason that if it ain't good one won't be in business for long.... Great vlog as always!!
Nasi kandar's secret is the use of tonnes of spices in just the right amount and in just the right way that the dishes just compliment each other as you eat them. It's a flavorful delight that really you can only get in Penang.... In a way it's a microcosm of us Malaysians where all the different cultures and influences when harnessed properly is a powerful thing indeed!!

Nasi Lemak is not a thing of Kuala Lumpur. It is considered our National dish, though it is very hard to say these days as so many dishes are competing for that spot. You can get Nasi Kandar throughout Malaysia, however, it originates from the northern parts of Malaysia and most say it was Penang.

The beauty of Malaysian food is that there are several "best"s of each food item (in Penang, at least). Another Nasi Kandar place to try is Deen Maju, and if you haven't had Char Koay Teow (CKT), there are many options, but the one a lot of people and tourists go to is on Siam Road (be prepared to queue up!)

    • @DeathByVlog
      @DeathByVlog  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yeah, everything is up to personal preference.. but that's what makes it possible for more small businesses to succeed. Definitely have to try the famous Char Okay Teow... we had some on Chulia street and it was good! Thanks for the suggestion 🙏❤️
