The way I see it, it's a Narnia situation. Sonic spent a lifetime living in that world as King Arthur, ruling Camelot and leading the Knights of the Round Table. When the prophecized end that Merlina saw finally comes to pass, Sonic is sent back to his world, right back to the moment he was sent there. As if he never left.
