- Hey guys! So sorry this video took as song as it did to come out! Today we will be analyzing the playable character system of Sonic Mania and why I think its design is so brilliant. Enjoy!
Huge thanks to @FCPlaythroughs for all the non-Sonic Mania footage I used, as well as @DJMykah for the dope remix of Studiopolis Zone.
Here’s the link to @LiamTriforce’s video about Classic Sonic: • Why I Love Classic Sonic

Sonic is the best character overall imo, He has so many abilities which can make him suitable for a lot of situations. The drop dash, Peelout, and fire shield all enhance his speed, while the insta shield is more offensive, and the water and electric shield help in his verticality. He is just so finely tuned with most of his abilities serving a useful purpose over another (except Peelout, its not better than drop dash, not by a longshot).
Even though Ray is my favorite to use, I do have to agree with you. Sonic (with the elemental shields) is perfect for any situation.
Something I love to do with Mighty is use his Hammer Drop on slopes to build speed quickly and I think that’s just neat
That’s a good point. I know I said in the video that Mighty’s hammer drop isn’t really good for building speed, but now that you mention it I do remember that some slopes mesh really well with his downward momentum and can channel his speed into the landing. I guess it does have some usages after all!
You know, Mighty and Ray as characters are essentially just remixed versions of Sonic and Tails. Mighty is just Sonic fused with Knuckles, and Ray is just Sonic blended with Tails.
You forgot that mightys hammer drop can by pass armored enemy's and can upon impact destroy enemy's in a short radius around him.
underated studios
You’re so good with these videos. Please do more.
Very great video! I really like how you made it feel like each character is overpowered in their won way. It really makes you think about all the different types of balancing devs have to do to make a good game.
Great video; I'd love to see an addendum with Amy in Origins.
You should add some background music to these and make a video about sonic heros
This is a good video. I don't see that many Sonic analysis so seeing one is cool!
Let’s gooooo lemon with the new post!!!!🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇
Thankfully with mods, I can restore Mighty's wall jump. And it works pretty well with Mania's level design.
I didn’t know Mighty had a wall jump! It’s a shame that Sega took that out, would have really improved his design and made him more fun to play
@@lemoncakestudios3031 yeah he had it in Knuckles' Chaotix. And alot of people didnt like it. But I do because its unique and helps with certain platforming sections.
Great video! I would love to hear your thoughts on Amy in Superstars once it releases.
How would Amy rank on this list? Great video by the way.
Thanks! I’d say that Amy (at least in her Origins appearance) would have a 3.5 for speed (since her hammer charge is a slightly weaker version of the drop dash) and a 1.5 for both platforming and exploration. Her extra moves might be great for killing enemies, but they don’t really gain her any advantages apart from that. She’s pretty much just Sonic but without the elemental shields. Thanks so much for the question! Now that I’m thinking about it, I should’ve at least mentioned her in my video.
I’m making my own attempt on Sonic Origins.
It’s called: Sonic: The Origins of Mania.
It’s a combination of Sonic Mania and Sonic Origins.
Playable characters:
Sonic the Hedgehog
Miles “Tails” Prower
Knuckles the Echidna
Mighty the Armadillo
Ray the Flying Squirrel
Amy Rose
I decided to edit some levels and make a few levels less hard.
And I replaced some levels with Sonic 4 levels. Because some words in zones can be repetitive.
And some levels will be replaced with Sonic Mania levels.
Sonic 1:
Green Hill
Sylvania Castle
Spring Yard
Lost Labyrinth
Star Light
Scrap Brain
Final Zone
Sonic CD:
Palmtree Panic
Collision Chaos
Tidal Tempest
Quartz Quadrant
Wacky Workbench
Stardust Speedway
Metallic Madness
Sonic 2:
Emerald Forest
Chemical Plant
Aquatic Ruins
Casino Night
Hill Top
Mystic Cave
Oil Ocean
Metropolis
Sky Chase
Wing Fortress
Death Egg
Sonic 3 & Knuckles:
Angel Island
Media Field
Hydrocity
Marble Garden
Carnival Night
Ice Cap
Launch Base
Mushroom Hill
Flying Battery
Salon Center
Delusional Pub
Magma Rock
Coral Cave
Sky Sanctuary
Titanic Monarch
Egg Reverie
That sounds really cool! Is this a hack that you’re making or just a concept? If it’s in the works, I’d love to give it a try when it’s done!
@@lemoncakestudios3031 It’s just a concept. I don’t know how to code, but if I knew, it would definitely be a Fanmade Sonic game.
12:00 sonic: no!!
ray: yes.
Unfortunately not had much time on mania. So far I don't really like ray (not used to his glide thing yet) and not sure how sonics drop spin works yet as usually tails or knuckles
It took me forever to learn the drop dash too. I didn’t use it my entire 1st playthrough. All you need to do is jump, re-press and hold the button, and then when you land Sonic will drop dash. I’ve heard a lot of people say Ray’s glide is a little weird: when you jump, press jump again to start the glide, then press forward to dive down, and then backward to pull up. If you do this in a repeated pattern, Ray will glide up and down to gain speed in the air
