      @@JonWrightMusicTV That's the main reason why i didn't jump into a YT channel of my owm, u know.. I didn't want to HAVE to make a video, just for the sake of putting it out and keeping the Logs going...
      Judging from what u present(ed) here.. , and this is the 1st time i watch a video of yours..... i would stick to whatever you want to say.. and not worry about numbers..
      I've been following quite a few guys that dove into this, a few years ago... and focused on quality. And their numbers are growing.. whilst others burn out too quickly.
      Honestly, as a hot / "impulsed" feedback i wanna give you.. right now.. is that i wish that we lived close to each other. Perhaps we could collaborate on some of these videos. U seem to have sort of complementary approach to what i would have.
      So, all the best in the world. Don't give up, keep at it.. whatever little videos a month you're able to put out.
      Like me, there will be those who have subscribed, and will listen to whatever you have to say, whenever you will be able to say it ;) .
      Kudos from Portugal Jon
      PS: that E-H Soul Food sounds brilliant , despite the lack of loudness that might be put out.

    The presence of a loop and a balanced output (XLR) would make this pedal an absolute winner

    • @Sascha_Franck
      @Sascha_Franck ปีที่แล้ว +5

      A loop would cost money (extra ADDA converters) and would add latency (ok, no need to discuss that...), but most of all with those extra connections IKMM would have to come up with a new housing and PCB instead of using those of the X-Gear series - which is probably the main reason why they can offer this thing for so little money.
      I rather wish it was smaller.

    If the effects after the mic are really a problem, you could run the presets without an IR simulation in the ToneX, then go out, through all your effects, and then into a CAB M for your IR. That would simulate a traditional amp setup, and you get some of the best IR simulation and control together with this amazing ToneX modelling.

    At this price point, I see players possibly buying 2 units.... running wet dry or stereo. You have a backup unit if one goes down and you still spent half the price of a Kemper or Quad Cortex. Then profile your own collection of drive pedals and build them into the presets so u can carry a mini to medium sized pedalboard with the 2 units, delay, reverb, modulation, and a midi controller/switcher.

    Effects being after cab (impulse response) is definitely not a big deal considering that's how the vast majority of albums are produced. Most mixers prefer using stuff like SoundToys or Eventide plugins in their DAW nowadays.

    • @JonWrightMusicTV
      @JonWrightMusicTV  ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Love Soundtoys for guitars in the studio. But there's just something slightly different about delays and reverbs hitting the power amp and being shaped by the speaker alongside the dry signal, to just applying affects to the final guitar tone - in the room, it's just a bit different. NBD as you say, but I think it's worth being aware of

      Not completely true. I rarely place time based effects in series after a cab. I use aux sends instead for recording which is the more traditional way of doing it. If I was to use this live I’d have to have a switcher with a parallel path or a mixer.

    • @millman82
      @millman82 ปีที่แล้ว

      EVH even live applied effects after the cabinet. He had a mic’d cab for his dry sound and also went into a attenuator and cab sim then to wet effects. So, definitely most sounds you hear, a lot even live, are after cabinet.

    • @pb25193
      @pb25193 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Time based effects can be swapped with IR without any real effects on the signal.
      It cannot however be swapped with an actual cab/mic sequence (there will be some difference). IR however is NOT a cab and mic. It is a very good simulation of cab and mic. You can move the delays and verbs up and down the chain with ir, you'll be fine.

  • @FastRedPonyCar
    @FastRedPonyCar ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I've owned all the major players in the modeling game and gigged with the kemper off/on for a decade and the thing with the kemper is that it's practically unbeatable from a core foundational tone perspective. None of the others (axefx, helix, QC) get the feel of playing through a real amp as right as the Kemper does and none of them take drive pedals in front as naturally as the Kemper and none of the others drive/boosts that are built in sound natural the way a decent analog boost in front of the kemper sounds.
    With that out of the way, I ended up using external delay/chorus, etc pedals in the kemper loop and a nice analog boost in front and it was great. The best way to think of the kemper is like a nice digital amp and that is all. Just ignore everything else and treat it like a guitar amp head.
    The nice and easy to use controller, the morphing, the desktop software, the tone profiling, etc are all just added bonuses.
    At the end of the day though, I went back to just using a great tube amp on stage but with the Torpedo captor X so I don't have to rely on a cab/mic and I can get a consistent tone in the PA and my IEM's.

    • @JonWrightMusicTV
      @JonWrightMusicTV  ปีที่แล้ว

    Thx for this video! I own both a Kemper and a newly purchased ToneX pedal with the software running on my computer. I love both in terms of quality of amp captures. But in terms of speed, I profiles 12 amp profiles while ToneX was working on only one in the same time. In addition to that I think the two products are not comparable, because the Kemper is a one-stop-shop, while the ToneX pedal is only one modular component that doesn't have all the Kemper features.

    I'm running my ToneX in the loop of my HX Stomp with the cab sim on the ToneX globally turned off - in that way, I can pre-amps and post-amp effects in the Stomp, with the ToneX just providing the amp tones. If want to a cab sim, I can use the cabs/IRs on the Stomp, but since at the end of my chain I've got a Blackstar Amped-1, I can go straight to a guitar cab and/or use the cab-sims on the Blackstar itself with the XLR out.

    When using an IR, placing reverb or delay before the IR is the same as placing it after. In the mathematical nuts and bolts, IRs are linear transforms, so they will give the same result regardless of order with other linear effects.
    (Anyone who is skeptical of this, please try it with your own modeler and do a null test. No need to spend more money on an external IR loader for TONEX because unless you’re putting nonlinear effects like distortion, overdrives or compressors between the cab and IR, it doesn’t matter if they’re pre- or post-IR.)

    • @JonWrightMusicTV

    • @400_billion_suns
      @400_billion_suns ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JonWrightMusicTV Nah, I didn’t forget it. I’m just not aware of any amp modeler that lets you insert effects between the modeled pre-amp and modeled power amp. You can only put them between the amp and cab, or after the cab. And if it’s using an IR for the cab (or any other linear transform cab model), then it doesn’t matter if delays and reverbs go pre-cab or post-cab. It’s the equivalent of A*B=B*A.

    • @JonWrightMusicTV
      @JonWrightMusicTV  ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, ignored then. The power amp can make a big difference to how your effects sound - you might well have a level boost in the loop that pushes the power amp into more compression.
      Amplitube itself allows you to put effects between the pre and power amps. I agree it’s not common in other devices and probably not an issue for many people but it’s not zero difference at all. I even went through the process of showing you how actually it didn’t bother me - maybe you didn’t get that far into the video.

    • @400_billion_suns
      @400_billion_suns ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JonWrightMusicTV Ah, I didn’t know Amplitube has a true loop insert between the pre and power amp. That’s very cool and it might be the only modeling package out there that does that. Even the AxeFX doesn’t have that capability and neither does the Helix.
      I did get that far in your video. I just see the misconception about pre or post-IR come up a lot, and wanted people to know that it actually doesn’t matter in most cases. I’ve seen a number of people considering using an external IR loader pedal with TONEX for this very reason and don’t want them spending money for something that won’t change the end result.
      I see now that I should’ve been more careful in how I phrased my last couple sentences, though. I didn’t mean “you” specifically; I meant it broadly to other people who read the comment who might be skeptical, they should test it themselves so they will be convinced. Sorry if it sounded a bit confrontational, and I’ll edit it to make it sound less so.

    I have no issue with having to delays in the signal chain after the cab sim, as I typically prefer that sound (delays in DAW) but they will tend to sound brighter with all other things being equal, because the cab IR will roll off high end. The main take aways I got here was the massive impact of 1) skill and feel playing 2) pickups on guitar - the “flavour” of many distortions really matters to an extent but sorted with 2 pedals - once you’ve got a whole band your got to balance the entire band anyway but.. it’s all about the punters - so much work and in reality an overdrive and delay and decent playing and 99.9% of punters wouldn’t know the difference- I remember seeing the Who live. Guitar sound best ever wall of fenders aimed into each other with a row of mikes. Unbelievable sound. I just have told this to 100 people and they just look blank as they can’t hear it. - learn how to play for your own sound - I’ve worked my sound to such a simpler place and it’s often enhanced by which guitar you choose / and even tunings - capo.. it’s cool and handy but it’s right you can tinker for months. Still need to have a decent song to play/ or write

    It's never going to replace the Kemper for me live... but I'm not a pro, only semi. The ToneX seems to be quite a different beast. I now have two Kempers, one powered, and I got a Stage for redundancy - I sold a Helix LT to get it.
    ToneX really needs a 'plus plus' version that encapsulates what the Kemper has, for live use, for me to ever consider it. I really don't want masses of pedals, for example, I never use my own OCD anymore, and the other KPA effects are absolutely good enough for me... Perhaps they will produce something like that one day.
    I think the ToneX will sit well maybe in an HX Stomp environment? Or full pedal board, I don't know. As for the tones themselves, I accept yours (and others') opinion that it is 'better', but Joe Public is never going to notice that level of distinction. I suspect it's more appropriate to make those distinctions in a studio environment. I just search for and find the profiles that sound fabulous, inspire me, and like I'm playing through a 'real' amp.
    A thought - delays after the speakers should be Ok in most cases, I would imagine... don't they record that way in studios (record a full signal chain dry, add ambients after)?
    What concerns me more really is that there are now a couple of mooted 'Kemper Killers' out there now (e.g. QC), but Kemper themselves have gone VERY quiet. They need to up their game perhaps and find a voice again to counter the competition. I am happy to take their excellent OS and Rig Manager updates, but what next? What are they up to??
