  • Today I return to the archaeology world and begin the project of restoring an Ancient City in Minecraft. Joining me on this adventure is MC_Oda. Because this is the introduction, we have a little bit of fun with it.
    We will be treating this like it as if it were a real archaeological project in the real world, with a few exceptions. The first step in something like this is to meet the client and go over the project details. We will also need to scout and map the site before starting anything.
    Big shoutout to Impala100 for bringing his particular flavor of goblin energy to the secretary role (I'm convinced that character is an omnipotent multiversal chaos being that really likes centers of bureaucracy and you cant convince me otherwise)

      I also tried doing the same thing before, I nearly finished I believe, but the main problem was trying to figure out what some of the buildings were supposed to look like, additionally the majority of the main city walls I had to redo because the asymmetry really annoyed me. I also added several water channels throughout the city, interpreting the ground of the city to have once been canals through which boats would come through, and the main entrance display build thing was lined with pools of water.
      I also gave the city several Roman/greek inspired architecture rebuilding the roofs like that of the Parthenon

    I made a new survival world last week. Spawned right on the edge of a mountainous taiga, and lucked out in having a LOT of meadow around. It's a gorgeous biome. Today I decided to jump down in the river and investigate a large cavern I saw that had an obvious mineshaft in it. I'm only in the mineshaft for a minute and a half before I look down and realize... Oh. That's an ancient city. The most dangerous area in the game. Directly below my base. Never thought I would see a warden for the first time long before I even kill an enderman in this world. Gotta say, running around an ancient city is a surreal experience when your base is pretty much a bunch of subneolithic pit huts.

      @@ElijahDawkins-yb1uc Yeah, as long as it's not a hardcore world and you can respawn nearby, once you summon a Warden you don't really have a reason not to take out as many shriekers and sculk sensors as possible. I just tested, so it may take a couple attempts to get the Mineshaft and Ancient City. Once you spawn, walk east, jump down into the river, turn south, swim for less than a minute and you should see the entrance to the cavern in question in the right-hand wall.

My brother and I raided an ancient city once before, and "rebuilding" it was something we initially thought of doing but lost steam on - instead deciding we really wanted to find a good world seed to build a town. I'm so excited for this series!
    I'm curious, would the location of the invasive plants like the shriekers and skulk sensors be archaeologically significant - perhaps indicating where native life may have once flourished? Would you mark it, or plant something there? Also, are you going to have the area lit up eventually, with the mountain above replaced?
    If you don't mind suggestions,,, regular lanterns would provide more light than soul lanterns, and you can cover things like jack-o-lanterns with carpet. Glow lichen may be moderately useful in replacing skulk. And, for the map, you could copy the city up to some remote area of the sky and frame maps of that, showing the city layout despite the mountain being on top of the real site. If the schematic commands work in command blocks, it could be done periodically at the push of a button.

    • @daskalosBCE
      @daskalosBCE  หลายเดือนก่อน +11

      So, interestingly enough, there are plants (non invasive) that grow in disturbed cultural soil that we look for out in the field. Rumex and Wolfberry are two that come to mind.
      Also, for the lighting, we have an idea for it already that i think youll like and will mesh with what we are going for.

    I love how realistic this is! I can just imagine how this will influence young kids into such a unique and fun field (and your cousin paleontology). I know I would have loved something like this that's actually super informative.
    I'm a paleo intern now, and I'm kinda learning this stuff as I go and by proxi. (I actually got offered to go out on my expedition recently! 🤭). It's also nice to see this and more details of the process

    I know you previously said that you wanted to keep your stuff vanilla so it was more accessible for people who can't or won't play modded, but I'd personally love to see you delve into the Fossils and Archeology mod.
    As the mod stands right now, it is currently heavily focused on the Paleontological side, with very little focus or attention to detail to the Archaeology. However, the developers of the mod are currently working on a major overhaul to the mod, including giving the Archaeological side of the mod the attention it deserves and adding a massive expansion to it, with many structures and artifacts based on real-world civilizations, as well as some fictional mod-oriented ones that you could have some fun unearthing the secrets of. (Some of the fictional stuff does have magical elements, but the devs have stated that they want the real-world-inspired civilizations to be more grounded in real science, so you don't have to worry too much about that.)
    The overhaul has no set release date currently, so if you'd like you can hold off on deciding, but in the future you could start a series on that, with Oda to help with museum, base, and enclosure design. And maybe, you could even have a real Paleontologist join in and provide their expertise as well!

    • @daskalosBCE
      @daskalosBCE  หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Or, and just hear me out here, the developers could come pick my brain on how to make the mod more realistic :)

      @@daskalosBCE I'm pretty sure they have an official Discord server where the dev team hang out and post progress updates now and then. I don't know if they'd respond, but you can certainly try to contact them through that, or maybe through some of their social media accounts, and give some input and feedback.

    I have a project with 3 ancient city's that are under my spawn.
    I'm turning it into a single pristine giant city.
    I've mined most of the space that i wanted. And I've came up with some building designs already. I can feel the burnout but this project is worth it
    I'm implementing dark oak and copper into the block pallet. It makes sense in my worlds lore
