Survivors of attack on Kasese police post give a gruesome account of events

  • Tension had built up for weeks in Kasese and things came to a head on Sunday 27th November when the army attacked the palace of the Rwenzururu King, Omusinga Charles Wesley Mumbere.
Officials say before the UPDF raid on the palace there had been a series of attacks on security establishments by people security officers claim were royal guards.
The biggest irony in the Kasese conflict was the manner in which unarmed civilians allegedly killed armed officers using rudimentary tools like pangas and knives.
One of the attacks against security officers was the Maliba police post, which is located 17 kilometres from Kasese town on the foot of Nwuyo Hill.
Three Police officers were hacked to death at Maliba. These were the OC Station Joseph Kule Nzangwa, the Officer Incharge of Criminal Investigations Richard Elai and a regular Samuel Musana.
Given the dicey security situation in the area, some of the eyewitnesses who were at the Police station at the time of the attack requested that NTV protect their identityas they gave first hand accounts of the attack.
The survivors give an account of a gruesome attack by men who had no fear of bullets. The attackers who were armed with machetes demanded guns as they advanced towards the Officer incharge of Maliba Police post, Joseph Kule Nzangwa.
The attackers are said to have demanded for guns and upon having their request denied, proceeded to hack police officers at the small police post. The other officers shot at them but the attackers kept on charging, which caused the officers to retreat.
Security may have been reinforced after the deadly attack but the post is still heavily exposed, with no perimeter wall and a makeshift gate made of long sticks. It's clear therefore that the attackers had easy access to the police post and probably caught the now deceased officers unaware.
The community is also surrounded by undulating hills and it's believed that the attackers spent a long time establishing themselves up the hill.
While a semblance of calmness has returned in Maliba, fear of a resurgence of these activities hangs over the area like the sword of Damocles. Some shops and homes remain closed in Maliba trading centre
Residents are asking government to do more to stabilize peace in this area.

Very sad indeed! Who gave the Royal Guards the command to attack?
Thank you UPDF and UPF for restoring calm to the area. This incidence has also exposed a weakness in your systems that needs to be addressed
