  • Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra conducted by / Orquesta Sinfónica de Gotemburgo dirigida por Thor Svedlund.
    I. Allegro (0:00)
    II. Allegro giocoso (10:29)
    III. Adagio (15:12)
    IV. Allegro vivace (24:31)
Polish-Soviet Russian composer Mieczyslaw Weinberg (1919-1996) held a distinguished position in the USSR, especially after the persecution he endured for being Jewish during Stalin’s last years. His Third Symphony fits well into the Zhdanov doctrine period, into which composers were compelled to write accessible, folk based music to ensure performances, please the Communist party leadership (and not been seen as a bourgeois dissident). The music is based on Belarussian and Ukrainian folk songs that are treated - yet - with absolute mastery into the sonata form.

I’m loving this composer’s work! So glad I’ve stumbled upon his symphonies and sonatas. There’s so much brilliant 20th century repertoire out there.

I totally agree. I found him about 1 year or so ago and Weinberg hooked me from scratch.

PLAYED LAST NIGHT ON RADIO3 DIRECT FROM A ROYAL ALBERT HALL LONDON HENRY WOOD PROM CONCERT WHEN THE CBSO HAD A CONTINIOUS APPLAUDING OVATION OF THE BEST PART OF 1Q MINUTES & I HEARD THIS IN HOSTPITAL, BUT AM HOME NOW. I THOUGHT THE COMPOSER WAS SHOSTAKOVITCH AS 62 YEARS AGO MY SPEECH THERAPIST IN IN OLD STREET LONDON RECCOMENDED SHOSTAKOVITCH TO ME TO LISTEN TO, WHEN WEINBERG WAS REATIVELY UNKOWN IN THE UK !!!!.

I just listened to the CBSO play this symphony. Not what I was expecting after listening to Weinberg's 3rd symphony.

This symphony may be based on folk music, but to call Weinberg's 3rd a "Folk-Song Symphony" is to belittle his accomplishment. It was probably written with the idea to fulfill political exigency, but it is an excellent work, in the style of Shostakovich's 9th written four years previously. The second movement is a delight, and the third is gorgeous, even if overdone, and the finale, which at first seemed to me only a "potboiler", turned out to be so exhilarating and enjoyable that I quickly changed my mind. And the orchestration could hardly be better.

No kidding! Pretty hard for a Soviet composer to make a living from music filled with pathos and angst after the Zhdanov decree and his list of banned works! "Simplify, simplify and be happy!"

Mieczyslaw Weinberg was a Jewish Polish composer who emigrated to USSR.. He was greatly supported by D. Shostakovitch. Their style was however very different. Weinberg's lyricism is more conventional, and we do not find the desperate feeling of loneliness and absurdity which make the most noticeable Shostakovitch's compositions, in his symphonies and string quartets. Nevertheless, Weinberg's compositions have an originality of their own. .

a deeply affecting symphony---Weinberg was a master of symphonic tone. He joins Mahler as being the top of that club of composers. that he and Mahler were both Jewish has something to do with this. i will leave it to the many amateur musical anthropologists who love classical music as I do to analyze this and to draw their own conclusions.

BUT IT SEEMS JEWISH PERSONS GET THE TOP JOBS WHETHER TALENTED OR NOT, WITH FEWER NONE JEWSISH PERSONS GETTING A LOOK IN, SUFFEERING POOR WAGES, YET DOING MOST OF THE WORK. IN THE UK FATS IN GENERAL DO LITTLE REAL WORK, WHILST THE WORKING CLASS WHO DO MOST OF THE REAL HARD WORK ONLY GET A THIRD TO A HALF OF THE CORRECT LEVEL OF THE MINIMUM WAGE. SINCE 1974 WAGES HAVE ONLY RISEN CIRCA 5 TIMES, YET PRICES IN GENERAL, ESPECIALLY FOOD, HAVE RISEN 5 TO 15 TIMES - THE UK GOVERNMENT DOES NOWT ABOUT THIS. THE UK HAS THE BIGGEST GAP TWIXT POOR AND RICH AND HAS LARGEST INEQUALITY AND IS THE MOST CORRUP[T COUNTRY IN WESTERN EUROPE.
