Thank you all for your amazing suggestions! We're going to watch them all and get back to you with our faves for a part two of this video 💕 ... might take a while though because WOW that's a lot of gay.
Recomendation: The Hours? Ok, maybe it's not a cheerful film but the lesbian relationships are portrayed in full complexity and character. Ps: I'm new here! Love from MÉXICO!
List of movies (from video) - Imagine Me and You - Lost and Delirious - Loving Annabelle - D.E.B.S. - But I'm a Cheerleader - Whip It - Carol - Blue is The Warmest Color - Fucking Amal - My Summer of Love - Tipping the Velvet - A Perfect Ending - Gray Matters - Black Swan - Gia - I Can't Think Straight Hope I didn't miss any!
I love lesbian shows and films where the lesbianism itself isn't the main focus even if the relationship is. I love when it is thrown in in the same way that heterosexuality is, like, "oh by the way, this is my girlfriend," and everyone acts normal about it. There is no powerful message behind it (like the whole 'gays are people too!!' stuff), there is no journey or ridiculous opposition to their sexuality. It gets repetitive and it is one of the tv tropes I hate the most. The more it is shown in popular media as being a taboo thing that people have to fight for or even just make a big deal about, the more that perpetuates in reality. Not every lesbian film has to be an explicitly inspirational story of overcoming adversity!!
Have you seen Princess Cyd? The protag is wlw, and there's a girl love interest, but the main story seems to be about her familial relationship with her aunt.
An example of a film that DOESN'T do this is Jenny's wedding. Terrible film, badly acted (not saying the actors are bad but there is no connection or chemistry between anymore) and edited so poorly with bad music cuts. Also it's all about how shocking it is for the family that their daughter is a lesbian and how the family feels and deal with it while sexualising their daughters relationship while the couple barely have screen time (and no chemistry). Bad movie but not bad to have a drink to and make fun of.
Mate, I got you. Not all of these have a happy ending but most do: The incredibly true adventures of two girls in love Nina's heavenly delights Desert Hearts Claire of the moon Fingersmith Saving face Kyss Mig Elena Undone Amor de femme Concussion The world unseen The four faced liar When night is falling A marine story Itty bitty titty committee The gymnast Better than chocolate Circumstance Bound Room in Rome High art Bloomington Spider lilies If these walls could talk 2 Yes or no The Chinese botanist's daughter
That is quite a list !! I would add : Jenny's Wedding (2015) April's shower (2003) Viola di mare (the Sea purple - 2009) The secrets (2007) Liz in September (2014) The First girl I loved (2016) Below her mouth (2016) oooh ... "Atomic Blonde" ... haven't watched it yet though ... but it is a must-see movie!!!
I love But I'm a Cheerleader, but when it came out we had so very few films that the bar was basically on the floor. I hesitate to recommend it as I presume that there are more sophisticated films by now. (and I still haven't gotten over Clea and don't want anyone else to suffer the same debilitating crush. Its totally not that I'm selfish and want her all to myself.) On the other hand, Imagine Me And You is, for me, miles ahead of the pack and I feel comfortable recommending it to everyone.
Some have been mentioned previously, but... The Handmaiden La Belle Saison Kyss Mig Elena Undone Room In Rome The World Unseen Desert Hearts Bonus: a film I had a hard time finding but it's a pretty nice one Hu Die (Butterfly). All of these have a happy ending, even if the couple doesn't exactly end together. If you watch any of these please let me know what you think!
The Thai film "Yes or No" is one of my absolute favorites. It's a super sweet story of two college roommates falling in love. There's a sequel too. 💜 Also, the tv series Gentleman Jack, based on the true life of Anne Lister, is stunning.
You should definitely rewatch Carol without prejudice! Its the most beautiful movie and Cate and Rooney are so amazing and really make the film and bring the characters to life. Don't worry about what other people tell you!
My FAVs so far: Imagine Me & You , Elena Undone (the music was awesome as well), Debs, I Can't Think Straight, Kyss Mig, The Incredible True Adventures of Two Girls in Love, Saving Face, When Night Is Falling...Running On Empty Dreams, Liz In September, Perfect Ending even though they have sad endings.
I really like basically all the ones mentioned... but also "Nina's Heavenly Delights" which is similar to "I cut think straight"... also I really hope Claudia has now watched "But I'm a Cheerleader"
Its a TV series not a film but my favourite one is Sugar Rush - it used to be on channel 4. A teenage girl moves to Brighton and realises she's a lesbian when she falls in love with her best friend (Sugar), very lighthearted and funny, plus everyone gets a happy ending (by season 2 finale). Another TV series recommendation is Hex - the main character's best friend is a lesbian (mini spoiler: lesbian becomes ghost). Happy, if weird ending (it got cancelled).
Thank you for the tips! The last lesbian film I watched was Carol and it deeply depressed me. There need to be more happy lesbian films! Let's start a petition 📃
DEBS is definitely my favourite of the ones you mentioned. I also don't want anymore depressing lesbian films! I'd put affair films in that category along with traumatic coming out stories. I did like Summer of Love though, possibly because I could imagine falling for Emily Blunt's character if I was a teenager. We really liked Carol as a film, it felt like a proper cinema experience, but we found it depressing emotionally. One that is definitely interesting cinematically is Mulholland Drive. It doesn't meet your criteria of emotional stability though! Also it is worth giving the L Word a try. The first episode isn't really like the rest of it and there's a new season coming I hear.
Thank you so much for making this video! We would add- Go Fish Maggie and Annie ( but it has a sad ending so Jessica may not love it) Goldfish Memory Incredibly True Adventure of Two Girls in Love And Then Came Lola
The movie "Fried Green Tomatoes" has 2 young women as best friends, but obviously in love. The director didn't really portray it as a lesbian film but you can see it as one.
The World Unseen is a movie with the same female actors from I Can't Think Straight. I highly recomend it. Btw you two are adorable and inspire hope in my lesbian heart. ❤
Clouds of Sils Maria - it's never explicitly said whether the characters are gay but it's about an actress who plays a lesbian and is a really intriguing film
A random list of movies worth watching if you like lesbian films: 1. Saving Face 2. Better then chocolate 3. Bound 4. Freeheld 5. Mulholland Drive 6. Stranger inside 7. Aimee & Jaguar 8. The Kids are alright 9. Desert hearts 10. Go fish 11. I’ve Heard the Mermaids Singing 12. Truth about Jane
Jessica & Claudia - Thank you for your recommendations, you may like to give these a watch. Reaching For The Moon - 2013 (A true story, not a barrel of laughs but a powerful film) With Every Heartbeat/AKA Kyss Mig - 2011 (A sweet romance from Sweden.) Desert Hearts - 1985 (A classic and a lovely film) When Night Is Falling - 1995 - (A sweet coming out story) The Secret Diaries of Miss Anne Lister - 2010 (A biopic set in the nineteenth century) Room In Rome - 2010 (A visually beautiful and passionate film)
Jenny's Wedding is really good. Also The Girl King, it's about Queen Christina of Sweden, based on her real life. She refused to marry and have children and she was famous for her intimate relationship with one of her ladies-in-waiting.
Sad to see no mention of Saving Face which is honestly my favourite alongside Imagine Me and You. Others that deserve a mention include Kiss me (aka With Every Heartbeat) which is a just beautiful film and Cloudburst which is the only movie I've found that has focused on an older lesbian couple.
Carmilla (the movie) is a recent production and it starts the film with the main protagonists already as a happy couple and follows their struggle to battle a supernatural curse thing and ex girlfriend !! Excellent representation and a happy ending
La belle saison (i think the eng title is summertime) is SUCH a good movie, I absolutely loved it. So much 70’s fashion and 70’s feminist movement, lovely Paris vibes, summertime country side and of course all of that lesbianism 😍 and a good story line and good acting!!
Oh my god, this video was SO relatable! Not only have I seen all those movies but also your reactions were so much like mine! It was like you were speaking my thoughts xD Also the "you have watched 60 minutes, now wait 45"- thing! Ugh, that was so annoying. I, too hated Blue is the Warmest color and my reaction when you brought up Carol was also "but there's a happy ending and they survive", that really felt like reading my mind. Loved this video and I laughed a lot! I also love Kyss Mig, another Swedish movie, where no one dies!
Imagine me and you is definitely the best lesbian film there is, it's great having a mix of genres within film but it's even better having a film were our sexuality is treated as just as loving and romantic as straight ones (if not more 😆) Also I love that the characters aren't necessarily femme, butch, etc. they're just people!
I remember watching “fire” and “bound” in my early 20s. I was dating an older man and he didn’t understand why I’d watch lesbian films. Hahahaha. Needless to say, that relationship ended.
This is quite a new one, so I'd imagine it hasn't been mentioned yet! (The DVD release is in December I believe.) Norway just made a big production (relatively to Norway being super small and all, so it's not Carol production big) called "Thelma" which is a supernatural movie about a girl's journey, also literally as she moves from the countryside to the capital to study at the university. It's slightly dark, and she discovers she has powers that serves as a kind of metaphor for her coming out journey as she falls in love with fellow student at the university. I highly recommend supporting this film, as mentioned it was quite a big production and got really good reviews. :) I really hope for more feel good lesbian romances in the future, hopefully without anyone getting hurt. As much as I appreciate and love "imagine me and you" the cheating theme is a bit unfortunate. :/ Can't wait for your next gay movies list! :D
What about Four-faced Liar?? Happy ending AND it was on Netflix at one point. Plus Saving Face! Another happy ending one. Jessica you will love them if you haven't seen them yet
I love Imagine me and You!!! I have a nice collection of DVD's and my aunt (Very straight catholic) used to always come and borrow a few. She decided to take it one day and I was like....... "you know whats that's about right.." she said that she knew she had read the back and she brought it back a few days later saying that she absolutely loved it!. D.E.B.S was the first lesbian film I ever saw. Love it!! I also love I cant think straight!!
Also the movie Mother's Day has a cute lesbian married couple in it as part of the central plot & they have a kid together. Stand up Comic & actress (Seeso show Take My Wife), Cameron Esposito and actress, Sarah Chalke (Scrubs).
I really liked Carol, didn't find it depressing I think the novel was far more depressing so I appreciate that they toned it down a bit and kept more happy moments.
The handmaiden is AMAZING. Yes it's a "lesbian film" but even putting that aside, the cinematography and the way the story is told has made it one of my favorite movies ever. Plot twists over plot twists. Such a clever story. Plus, the gayness and the mature scenes made it even better lol 🙌🏻 Most amazing movie. Must see!!!
This video is a year old, but if you are still taking suggestions, check out V for Vendetta. There is a serious subplot about a Lesbian and her one true love. It is emotionally heavy though, and based on a comic book, which is why I thought of you.
The anatomy of a love scene, is quite good. One of them has an addiction but thats more linked to her history than her mental stability and sexuality. Could you do a video where you list good lesbian books? I've had similar experiences in trying find good ones.
There is one called Fire that I remember really enjoying. But I'm a cheerleader is my all time favorite and the first i watched because my gf at the time recommended it and i find myself going back and watching it for nostalgia frequently.
Hi girls! ❤ y'all! -Love 'Tipping the Velvet'! - Please see -The Secret Diaries of Miss Anne Lister 2010 (based on true story) -Better Than Chocolate 1999 - Out at the Wedding 2007 -If These Walls Could Talk II 2000 - The Girl King 2015 - & Please see 'Call Me By Your Name' 2017 (It's about 2 guys, but beautiful film!)
Ooh, I'd be really interested if you did a video of, like, top 10 (or top 5, because as you've said there aren't that many :P) lesbian films you didn't like and why. I will probably have seen the same films and not liked them either, but it's always nice to have vindication!
"Claire of the Moon" is one that I really liked. It's old but I think you will enjoy it. Also "Better Than Chocolate" not a cinematic masterpiece but a cute movie over all.
Saving Face for Claudia for sure. Probably my favourite. LOVE Imagine Me & You, I Can't Think Straight and DEBS. Great picks. Oh and If These Walls Could Talk 2 is a Must See, as well as The Chinese Botanist's Daughter.
*Desert Hearts The Gymnast Saving Face The World Unseen Nina's Heavenly Delights Bound If These Walls Could Talk 2 Concussion Kiss Me Freeheld The Chinese Botanists Daughters* Some of the movies I enjoyed that you did not mention in your video. There are of course more, but those I would recommend. Worth noting that Dreya Weber from The Gymnast also did A Marine Story and Raven's Touch. *smiles and waves*
I think the sex scenes in blue is the warmest colour are accurate for some situations/relationships. Maybe not how lesbian sex is all the time but I think some people can relate. One of my favourite movies.
I really like 'Pride' and although it isn't about lesbianism specifically, three of the main charecters are lesbians and its seen in a very positive light (also the cinematography is AMAZING, their use of colour paticularly) .
My absolute favourite is *The handmaiden* which is almost same as *Fingersmith* Films that I liked: 1. *DEBS 2004* (Positive) 2. *Imagine Me & You* (P) 3. *Saving Face* (P) 4. *I Can't Think Straight* (P) 5. *Room in Rome* (Ambiguous) 6. *Elena Undone* (P) 7. *Blue Is the Warmest Color* (N) 8. *Carol* (P) 9. *Below Her Mouth* (P) 10. *A perfect ending* (A) List is a little longer. I forgot all the movies that I watched.
When Night Is Falling, The Duke of Burgundy, Its in the Water, But I'm a Cheerleader, Princess Cyd, Kiss Me, The Firefly, Desert Hearts, ...The Hunger?
Very late to the suggestions but there was the TV Movie "If These Walls Could Talk 2" starring Chloe Sevigny. It's not flawless by any means but it features 3 lesbian couples in different eras of American history.
Well i recommend few, my favorite one is… 1- “ When night is falling ” is a Canadian/french production 2- “Elena Undone” 3- “ Fingersmith ” ----------- So yeah these are my picks intense yet happy-endings *wink wink* movies.
I suggest you watch San Junipero. It's a part of a series called The Black Mirror but they've dedicated one episode with a lesbian content and is about an hour long.
My favorite lesbian movie is from Vietnam called Yêu (love) is about two girls who are best friends since they are kids but life led they to several situations that finally met again
Summertime is one to watch, its a french film, its on nowtv if you have it, at least it was when I watched it. Its a romantic film I would say. Another one is Pariah is about a girl coming out to her parents and having a go at love. My favourites are summertime, debs, but I am a cheerleader, gray matters and lost and delirious.
Thank you all for your amazing suggestions! We're going to watch them all and get back to you with our faves for a part two of this video 💕 ... might take a while though because WOW that's a lot of gay.
Please watch Firefly...it's a Colombian lesbian film. It is truly enjoyable.
It's on Netflix
Watch it....Please.
I would definitely recommend Fire (directed by Deepa Mehta)! It is such a wonderful film and it has a happy ending!!
Recomendation: The Hours? Ok, maybe it's not a cheerful film but the lesbian relationships are portrayed in full complexity and character. Ps: I'm new here! Love from MÉXICO!

Saving Face is incredible and light hearted! It's the only lesbian movie I've seen with an Asian American main character. Definitely my favorite.
xapxap There's also Red Doors. Don't recall too much, but also Asian American
You're right! I forgot about that one. Great movie but too bad its not as lesbian centric.
Saving Face is my fave
Saving Face is one of my favourites, also talks about the daughter and mother Asian dynamic relationship, and it’s a very funny film!!😂😂
Not Carol? I was mesmerised by that film.
ikr
I saw Carol in the theater multiple times, I have to love a movie kind of a lot to pay to see it more than once. 😂😍
It'd be nice to see more films/tv shows where lesbianism isn't the main focus, I agree!

I adore Carol. But I'm a cheerleader was one of my favorite movies when I was younger
The Handmaiden
La Belle Saison
Kyss Mig
Elena Undone

The Thai film "Yes or No" is one of my absolute favorites. It's a super sweet story of two college roommates falling in love. There's a sequel too. 💜 Also, the tv series Gentleman Jack, based on the true life of Anne Lister, is stunning.

"she didn't die, okay? she's happy now" at least i'm not the only one to deny paulies death haha
Full on denial ha ha
Thank you for the tips! The last lesbian film I watched was Carol and it deeply depressed me. There need to be more happy lesbian films! Let's start a petition 📃
+StrawberryLil oh lord, I am there 100% for that petition!
‘Bound’ and
‘A Room in Rome’ are two of my favorites
I love bound!!!!
We would add-
Go Fish
Maggie and Annie ( but it has a sad ending so Jessica may not love it)
Goldfish Memory
Incredibly True Adventure of Two Girls in Love

my favourite movie is carol. it's just.....A good movie.
The movie "Fried Green Tomatoes" has 2 young women as best friends, but obviously in love. The director didn't really portray it as a lesbian film but you can see it as one.
Fingersmith by Sarah Waters excellent film.
Love that movie.
The World Unseen is a movie with the same female actors from I Can't Think Straight. I highly recomend it. Btw you two are adorable and inspire hope in my lesbian heart. ❤
I’ve been looking for a good happy film list for a while! Although a sad ending, I loved Gia too
I love Claudia's top!
Me too I wonder where she got it from ... I like her style
me, too!
Clouds of Sils Maria - it's never explicitly said whether the characters are gay but it's about an actress who plays a lesbian and is a really intriguing film
Imagine me and you is the Notting hill of gay movies. Love it it's sweet, nice and just happy feels all round x

San Junipero (Black Mirror episode) is a wonderful happy-ending lesbian love story.
I love Carol, because of Cate Blanchett. When you look at her even the sad part of the movie doesn't feel so bad.
THELMA! Great Norwegian movie. And of course Handmaiden by Park Chan-wook.
You should watch Kiss Me it is a beautyful movie from sweden. It is a great love story with really intense moments.
The Gymnast was good. Can't remember ending so can't say if it was happy.
My first lesbian experience was after watching blue is the warmest colour... I say watching..... we watched about 15 mins
Yeah, I watched it over 2 years ago, still dont know what happens after the first 20 min
Carmilla (the movie) is a recent production and it starts the film with the main protagonists already as a happy couple and follows their struggle to battle a supernatural curse thing and ex girlfriend !! Excellent representation and a happy ending

Try 'Saving Face' and 'I Can't Think Straight'. Funny and light-hearted, yet true in many aspects. :)
There;s a Spanish movie that's actually on Netflix called "The Firefly" which is just a beautiful story of two girls who find love after a tragedy.
Oh my god, this video was SO relatable!
Not only have I seen all those movies but also your reactions were so much like mine! It was like you were speaking my thoughts xD
Also the "you have watched 60 minutes, now wait 45"- thing!
I've found my opinions to be pretty common after discussing this with my fellow lesbian/bi friends ha ha
"Saving Face" and "Spider Lily" (Taiwan). I haven't seen many.
You may want to check out one of the older movie 'Saving Face' starring Joan Chen, one of my favourite.
"Better Than Chocolate" is my favorite young-person drama, and my current favorite lesbian movie is: "Elena Undone"...
I remember watching “fire” and “bound” in my early 20s. I was dating an older man and he didn’t understand why I’d watch lesbian films. Hahahaha. Needless to say, that relationship ended.

Can't wait for your next gay movies list! :D
The film Disobedience had me shoook!
What about Four-faced Liar?? Happy ending AND it was on Netflix at one point. Plus Saving Face! Another happy ending one. Jessica you will love them if you haven't seen them yet

Mother may i sleep with danger (remake) teen flick
The Chinese Botanist's Daughters
Kiss Me
The world unseen
Im obsessed with the cinematography of the french lesbian film water lilies
Elena Undone is a great movie! Mature scenes but overall about how love transcends all barriers. Happy ending!!
Bound 1966 is a really good film as well. I love your videos btw ❤
Plus, the gayness and the mature scenes made it even better lol 🙌🏻
Most amazing movie. Must see!!!
I'm with you Jess, I can't do the teacher student relationship storylines.
I think "It's in The Water" would be right up Jessica's alley.
Summertime! It's a french movie, but I think you can find it in english subtitles.
This video is a year old, but if you are still taking suggestions, check out V for Vendetta. There is a serious subplot about a Lesbian and her one true love. It is emotionally heavy though, and based on a comic book, which is why I thought of you.
That handmaiden is so beautiful and has a happy ending and girl trash is a really fun lesbian musical
The anatomy of a love scene, is quite good. One of them has an addiction but thats more linked to her history than her mental stability and sexuality. Could you do a video where you list good lesbian books? I've had similar experiences in trying find good ones.
watch cloudburst!!!!!!! such an amazing funny and emotional film at the same time
There is one called Fire that I remember really enjoying.
Fun fact, Misha Barton was also gay in a great series called "once and again" starring opposite Evan Rachel Wood!
Thanks for the suggestions! :)
Watching lesbian films in incognito mode on Megavideo is a massive throwback to my teenage years Claudia hahaha!
*Desert Hearts
The Gymnast
Saving Face
The World Unseen
Nina's Heavenly Delights
Bound
If These Walls Could Talk 2
Concussion
Kiss Me
Freeheld
The Chinese Botanists Daughters*
Some of the movies I enjoyed that you did not mention in your video. There are of course more, but those I would recommend. Worth noting that Dreya Weber from The Gymnast also did A Marine Story and Raven's Touch. *smiles and waves*
Katharine and Robin's storyline on depserate housewives
Bloomington
I’ve only seen Imagine Me & You. And I have loved it since seeing it! I think I need to brush up on my wlw films!
I think the sex scenes in blue is the warmest colour are accurate for some situations/relationships. Maybe not how lesbian sex is all the time but I think some people can relate. One of my favourite movies.
the Miseducation Of Cameron post is really good but it came out after you made this video but it is super good.
The World Unseen * Saving Face * 1 Million Happy Nows * Jenny’s Wedding * Tell It To The Bees (I enjoyed the book, different ending😉)
Rent is my favourite movie/show (both the Live On Broadway 2008 and the movie) and if you have a heart you should watch it. So so charming.
I really like 'Pride' and although it isn't about lesbianism specifically, three of the main charecters are lesbians and its seen in a very positive light (also the cinematography is AMAZING, their use of colour paticularly) .
My absolute favourite is *The handmaiden* which is almost same as *Fingersmith*
Films that I liked:
1. *DEBS 2004* (Positive)
2. *Imagine Me & You* (P)
3. *Saving Face* (P)
4. *I Can't Think Straight* (P)
5. *Room in Rome* (Ambiguous)
6. *Elena Undone* (P)
7. *Blue Is the Warmest Color* (N)
8. *Carol* (P)
9. *Below Her Mouth* (P)
10. *A perfect ending* (A)
List is a little longer. I forgot all the movies that I watched.
I'm literally the same with tipping the velvet hahah x
A girl thing with Elle Machpherson is good too!
I totally agree with you about liking the relationships in lesbian films when both women are on a more level playing field.
Well i recommend few, my favorite one is…
1- “ When night is falling ” is a Canadian/french production
2- “Elena Undone”
3- “ Fingersmith ”
-----------
So yeah these are my picks intense yet happy-endings *wink wink* movies.
I suggest you watch San Junipero. It's a part of a series called The Black Mirror but they've dedicated one episode with a lesbian content and is about an hour long.
i recommend you 'the handmaiden'! it is my fav lesbian film, you will love it
It's in the water is a good one.
WATCH "THE FIREFLY" !!!!! its in spanish but theres captions (its available on Netflix) its suuuppppperrrrrrr good with an amazing happy ending
