YESSS! I’m so so happy you covered this mall! I went to Bowling Green State University and I always found this mall fascinating. Fun fact- Every October a part of the mall gets transformed into a haunted house!
During the height of the pandemic, my friends and I would come here often since majority of downtown was closed. We would get drunk and try on random clothes at the thrift store, ride on the $0.25 rides, and play mini golf! The only place where we didn’t have to worry about social distancing!

I'm not sure what this mall was like in the 80's but when I moved here in 2003 there was a skate park by the movie theater as well as a large toy store. It was pretty lively even then.

I would come out to Bowling Green for summer camp and figure skating workshops. I remember going to this mall - my memory has it looking just like this, but it felt like such a long hallway… I remember it having vacancies in the mid 1990’s - so strange to see it again. So glad you covered this mall. As always, loving your content. -Bree

I’m really glad you made this video about the Woodland Mall. I’m from Bowling Green and my mom would take me to this mall when she went shopping. There was an awesome toy store that would let kids play with the pedal tractors and toys that they had on stock in the store. I also remember riding the 25 cent rides that would spin you in a circle. One of them was shown at 8:23. There used to be another set of rides which had a white semi truck which was my favorite. I would also frequent the movie theater at the mall too. I’m sad to see it close but it’s probably for the best. People always said to bring an umbrella on rainy days when watching movies there haha. Thanks again for the video, it brought back some great memories!

I am pretty much interested in anything abandoned or outdated. These places used to mean a lot to people emotionally and many of them still do. I miss Sears back when they sold Pokémon stuff, looking at snowblowers with my Dad or going shopping with my Mom.

I grew up with this mall. It did well for a decade, but began to fail before most malls did. The reason was the location. I remember a big debate on what highway it should go on, and they made a mistake by putting it on Rt 25, which was basically a country highway, versus 75. Probably because of cheaper land.

    • @bradleycrouch8448
      @bradleycrouch8448 ปีที่แล้ว

It faltered. and Brian Young (ie Professor Tinker) brought it back singlehanded for about two years with his toy store; then, his partner screwed him over somehow (he never did tell me how, exactly) and that independent mini-anchor became an office complex. That was the beginning of the end right there.
Good news is the maniac started another toy store.

    • @theinsanegamergeek

@@bradleycrouch8448 He and his partner got into a heated argument about what to do with the professor thinkers name, and his partner pulled his share of the funding. Young didnt have enough to cover the difference and was forced to liquidate. I was friends with his son and spent many a summer day helping to put together his lego displays, most of which still survive in his private workshop.

I went to college and grad school in Bowling Green from 2001-2008 and I used to go to the mall all the time when I didn't know what else to do with my time, or if I needed something and didn't want to go to Perrysburg or Toledo. I'd go shopping at Elder-Beerman and I think there was maybe a bookstore and a shoe store I liked, too. I also used to go tanning there, and I got my nails done at the salon there a couple of times. There was also a candy store that I used to like going into. They had some other stuff besides candy, but that was the main feature. There were also frequently vendors just selling random stuff on tables. Now that I think about it, I had a lot of memories at that mall. Hanging out with my friends. Going there to buy clothes and make up for a date with a cute boy. Yeah, we called it the "small" for a reason, but it wasn't a bad place.
I actually just had another memory. A guy I was dating came to visit me and there wasn't really anything else to do besides go to the mall. So we went to the music store, which I think was an Fye. I bought a Kylie Minogue CD and then we end to sit in his Jeep in the parking lot of the mall and listen to "can't get you out of my head." Hmmm.

The malls are really fun, but exploring abandoned places in general is actually really interesting, especially given the socioeconomic contexts around them. Exploring an abandoned school, old infrastructure, derelict buildings, even ghost towns are things I'd totally watch! I hope your new phase proves enjoyable for you. Concord Mall in Wilmington, Delaware is currently hovering around the low 50's occupancy rate. So not totally dead yet, but it's getting there and it's owned by Namdar, so no one has much hope for it. It is getting propped up by a lot of Mom and Pop joints at this point because no national chains want to lease there, so it's in an interesting phase right now. There have been no significant updates since 1994 so you should really love it. It really began to bleed out when Sears closed in 2020. When Macy's inevitably leaves, the next big bleedout should happen.

Another excellent video Ace. I enjoy the wistfulness and some melancholy thoughts of times that have gone by since I too grew up around malls (I'm a early 1960s baby). I can see you looking for new sources of content [even though there are a bazillion malls!]. Did you consider doing some current takes on wedding venues? I know you do many weddings ... it might be a way to get a video out of your wedding DJ gigs. Dunno how many folks other than prospective brides and parents would view it though. There are old transportation systems (trains, ferries, cruise ships) that would also be fun to view. If you stay with malls I will still be entertained and watch your excellent vids!

Great content malls or not. Funny I visited Rogers Arkansas and visited a somewhat dead mall in July 1994 while visiting relatives. Why I call it somewhat dead walmart started renting space for offices as the mall was dying and that in turn helped it along the death march. They ended up buying the mall and slowly stopped renewing leases until when I went there 2 shops remained one was a laundry mat that was attached to the mall but never had an entrance to it and an outbuilding about 20 feet from the laundry that showed movies at a discount rate because they were between the full price theatre and the video realeas hence a cheaper rate like 2 or 3 dollars or so. Had to do laundry and one of the locals told the story to us the laundry mat owner was near the end of his lease and walmart was trying thier best to force him to end the lease early but he was trying to keep it running until the end because he didn't want to pay for a lease without use of it.

Lloyd Center in Portland, OR is a mall begging for someone to visit and do a video on. It is a dying mall and nearly almost dead after it lost its Macys last year. It unfortunately has little aesthetics left since it was remodeled a few years ago but there are still some hints and touches here and there. It opened in 1960 and was considered by some to be the largest mall in the world when it opened. It recently was reveled that the owners of the mall defaulted on their loan so they might not be open as for very much longer.

My home town. My wedding registry was at that elder beerman anchor store. A jc penny used to be where the dunhams sporting goods store is now. This mall was built in the late 80s, 87 or 88. There was a retail store called Cooks? In the third anchor spot. Or Ames? Forget. This mall's creation wasn't a bad idea, like many other malls where the advent of internet retail and then Walmart and Meijer supercenter stores collectively added nails to the coffin. Very few if they are honest could predict the paradigm shift in shopping that would too soon be occurring.

@@chriscarpenter7137 Hello Chris Carpenter, yes the Hills store was the third, that building was built after the main part was already open, I watched them build it everyday standing or sitting at what was then the back doors near the movie place, I know the carpenter name, I worked in the city schools for 10 years, Ridge, Southmain, and the BGJH on Church St and Wooster,

What year was that ABC Sunday night movie intro from? It was sometime in the 1970s for sure but not sure what year. In the 1980s they had a different guy with a deeper voice.

You have a treasure trove of dead malls to cover in the Hudson Valley of NY: JV Mall, Remains of the Dutchess Mall, Remains of the South Hills Mall, the Aviator Mall and the best Dead/ not dead Mall: Rensselaer Mall. Have always preferred your work over Bells. And don’t forget the Massena Mall, with the abandoned strips center, and fake walls cutting off the dead wing.

Great video Ace! I've been to that mall a couple of times in it's hay day. I watched Beavis and Butt head back in the day too. It was on while i was in college. Me and my buddies had a drinking game we played while it was on! Lol.

I live in Elgin, IL and if you ever get to NE Illinois you should check out both Springhill Mall in West Dundee and Stratford Mall in Bloomingdale. Both near death. And to see a closed but still standing mall, drive over to Charlestowne Mall in St. Charles. Illinois’ anti-business atmosphere hasn’t helped any of these. Thanks for your efforts!

It might work well to expand to other kinds of spaces with similar aesthetics, to office buildings, old airports, industrial spaces, maybe even parks. A lot of that range would've disappeared awhile back though, as old style independent department stores would have.
