EDIT: Updated audio video: th-cam.com/video/fiehkBwQxAM/w-d-xo.html Alright, after some comments got back to me about people's ideas for sparse line formations making a huge difference (they didn't), we decided to run this series of tests, and get to the bottom of whether or not Illwinter managed to balance bows and crossbows effectively or not! Let me know below if you guys have found any other sneaky ways to make ranged weapons go from an afterthought to a game-changer!
Music is a bit too loud. Hard to hear you in parts. Sidechain compression based on the frequencies your voice is most audible would probably help without having to turn the music down... or there's the simple option of turning it down a bit lol
Yea, unfortunately during the recording of this, I had a fan going in the background, so I had to utilize the BGM to sort of neutralize/cover it up, but in the future I'll either be NOT using a BGM at all, or lowering it to about half. Appreciate the feedback, as that's what helps me get better at this!
REALLY glad to have found your channel!! Enjoying the Dom6 content, very informative and learning alot. hope you can keep putting these out , love the Nation Overviews, and the "deep dives" into mechanics!! Cheers mate from a new subscriber
300 crossbows has been effective against tons of stuff until Arrow Fend comes out, and Arrow Fend just ate a solid nerf moving from a 6 to a 7 between Dom 5 and Dom 6 so crossbow stacks should have some more time to shine. If you're willing, I'd be curious seeing Hail of Burning Embers, Hail of Serpent Fangs, Rush of Strength, Army of Giants, Wind Guide crossbows trying to punch through Arrow Fend, Legions of Steel knights with a protection bless backed by Storm. I'm mostly wondering if full buff crossbows deal damage quickly enough to have some viability late game. I'm aware such stacks would eat battlefield clears, but I'm still curious because it'd be pretty doable to include 100 crossbows in late game armies and buff them with the rest of the army if the only specific buffs to them are Hail of Burning Embers, Hail of Serpent Fangs, and Wind Guide.
We did a test (if I remember correctly) with arrow fend on the first (or second?) video on archery, and I believe it turned out high protection was BETTER, but I'll go test both out together real quick and see what I can manage. Just finished recording, I'll put a link to the quick little video here for ya: th-cam.com/video/bZxQnBxxmnM/w-d-xo.html Hope it helps!
I managed to get all of the buffs in there for ya, so hope the video works properly (though admittedly, it was a QUICK edit, so forgive any mistakes!) these freaking test battles are so finicky, they kept trying to go off script, and I even went so far as giving them slings of accuracy with "fire closest" after their script up, and even THAT wasn't working well. Sheesh!
Thank you so much! I appreciate that a ton! Hopefully I can crank out a few more, and I'll be adding (in addition to dominions) some Night of the Dead content here shortly. Been having a blast with that game!
Very true! That would be a decent soft counter, especially on nations that generally don't have good access to evocations to prevent undead swarming (just archer swarm instead, haha!). Thanks for the comment and feedback!
Actually, the reason I scripted both of the precision buffs was because it lowered the amount of same-team kills by around 35%. It was pretty hefty. The primary issue too was that on smaller army vs army tests, without the precision, close to 40% of the missiles just plain ol' missed, so even though with these massive armies they don't really "miss the square" often, the buffs are necessary to use (I feel) to avoid killing your own troops and not miss an unnecessary amount. Anytime I test anything, I try and keep the variables as low as possible. Using every buff you WOULD with an archery focus would keep the variables "the same" so they can be eliminated, essentially. Hope that made sense ;)
Yep! No joke, that spell can hit like a truck against human naked mages, but now its less effective (now that it can only hit what, 25% of the battlefield, and is capped at 1 damage for "some" of the hits), and I hate that shields apply to it (as its hard to imagine a soldier holding it over his head AND fighting reliably in combat), but those are small gripes. That reminds me: now that I'm testing archery I need to go test evocations vs specific nations.
@@skoub3466 100% I thought people were sleeping on it back in Dom 4, when I was obsessing on Ulm, then the nerfs came through to things like Rain of stones/earthquake, and I STILL think they're sleeping on Earth. Its an amazingly diverse school. Fire = damage, Water = weaker damage but some thematic stuff. Earth and Nature = wildly diverse defensively AND offensively. Its part of why I feel Pangea has been SO strong for so long, not just those damnable white centaurs.
Thanks for the comment and feedback! I might check out the resprite for my own personal playtime, but for the channel, I like to keep it as vanilla as possible to help out newer players too.

@@AOReaper much obliged, I have watched this a couple times. I think it's the soundtrack!
IIRC, ranged weapons don't give fatigue either so checking on crossbow viability late game as a soft counter to Rigor would also be nice.

Don't caleum units walk forward if they're in line formation and hold and attack?
I wish! That's what I was hoping for, but nope!
Harbingers casting these buffs on mass crossbows changed the whole game for LA Marignon
Absolutely monstrous. Its quite impressive that they're still able to punch through the air shields and super high protection. Didn't expect that.
Key take-away: don't use Caelum to run archery tests.
Oh my gosh you're not wrong. Those sneaky Fravashi monsters... I swear!
Thanks for the video and doing the tests. Thumbs up!
I'd only turn off the music. It was very annoying
th-cam.com/video/fiehkBwQxAM/w-d-xo.html new video where I lowered the audio a ton
Does the prec buffs even make a difference in this test though? Like if you ran same save file w/ precision buffs removed I'd guess it's same outcome.
