@@FilmAcolyteReturns yes, but it's not even close to being similar to one of these segmented whip swords, which would defeat the purpose. Plus it is plagued with quite a few problems, but can be easily made from bandsaw blades.
Keep in mind there were far more cheap/poor quality swords in circulation throughout medieval Europe, Central Asia and East Asia than expensive top quality ones, so we're more likely to come across those when doing historical site excavations. The well preserved swords that are family heirlooms and museum pieces are typically ceremonial in purpose only even though they'd be good weapons; a knight or a samurai may be able to afford a high quality sword, but waiting for months for it to be made is another issue entirely (and it could easily take weeks or months for a top end piece especially when you consider they didn't have modern equipment to cut down on manufacturing time, time in which said warrior might be called upon to fight). Furthermore swords required lots pf training time, expensive or not. It's why for most medieval armies the weapon of choice was the spear. It doesnt take much training to poke someone with a pointy stick; a sword was your backup weapon.
...and that's probably also why many military regiments (local farmhands/militia conscripts) in the past trained as a group with shields and spears since it's the fastest to nurture and most affordable one... a classic poke 'n poke strategy.
@@avoidant560 Swords are not a main weapon, they are a sidearm. Spear and polearms have too many advantages both in 1vs1 and especially in fighting formations.
Amazing build. I knew it was going to be a complicated build when you said you were going to make this kind of sword but this video is eye opening. Truly amazing what you made.
Sven, very tough build…. But you stuck it all out on the line and you showed us the true meaning of never giving up as a blade smith. You didn’t give up and you put a blade on the table. And for that, you get to move on to the next round of competition. It will KEAL!
Segmented blades is an interesting problem. Remember Kurgan in the first Highlander movie? His segmented sword fascinated me and I tried to figure out a way to make a sword that could be broken down and reassembled like that and still be strong and sturdy enough to survive a fight. This was all theoretical and I never even considered trying to make anything so I could afford to come up with pretty insane ideas. Eventually I think the best of my whacky ideas was to use a vacuum to keep the segments together. It would rely on incredibly tight tolerances with surfaces as close to perfect as gauge blocks which would allow them to form a seal. By making the blocks have a taper at one end and a slot to match the taper of the next block at the other they would self index, and the surfaces inside the taper would be protected from damage ensuring the cavum seal wouldn't be broken by a single swing of the sword. Down the middle of the segments there would be a hole running from the handle to the tip segment which would be solid. By pumping out the air in the hollow core the segments would be held together. The problem with something like tis is tolerances, tolerances and tolerances. First of making the segments to the necessary tolerances would be a nightmare, but I believe that it would be possible. Next there is the importance of the surface finish of the connection tabs not being marred in any way as that would quickly compromise their ability to form a seal. And then there's dust, lint and just about any kind of dust as that again would compromise the quality of the seal that's needed. All in all it's not a very realistic design as there are to many ways it could fail, and on top of that the cost of making something like this would be monstrous. Add that I doubt it would prove very resilient and it feels even less worth ever trying to make something like this. However is what you wanted was a sword that could be broken down, but were not necessarily sturdy enough to swing with any authority then the "tongue and grove" idea still works. Make the center channel big enough to thread a decently sized wire through and use that to connect the tip segment to a screw type mechanism for tightening the wire and you have a sword that can be built a lot cheaper than the first version. The tolerances doesn't have to be nearly as tight so the machining would be a lot cheaper. There's a world of difference to machining something to a fraction of a thousands of an inch and doing the same but to better than a millionth of an inch. The resulting sword would look good but if the wire keeping it together stretch the least bit it will start moving in the joints. Using a solid wire or even a rod would make it sturdier but compromise on the whole take down idea by making it bulky when disassembled. Using two tapered pins for each segment instead of machining a tongue and grove in each would make it easier and cheaper to make and they would still indicate securely.
That was dope AF. Very entertaining. Thanks for the humor and smart editing. I love that you show your mistakes. Makes me think about how I would solve the problem. Great job!
I'm not sure how often you revisit comments and the like, but for future help in the case of drilling through rod or tubing, a spot drill before drilling through will prevent it from walking! Love this so much!

@@nachtkind46 Um buddy? So is this sword.
I now understand why a well made sword can cost a small farm in the middle ages.
It’s more like the price of a castle but yeah.
@@avoidant560 And spears are cheaper to make,ye
@@avoidant560 Swords are not a main weapon, they are a sidearm. Spear and polearms have too many advantages both in 1vs1 and especially in fighting formations.
Amazing build. I knew it was going to be a complicated build when you said you were going to make this kind of sword but this video is eye opening. Truly amazing what you made.
Thanks a lot!! Definitely a very stressful, yet fun build. But i‘ve got quite a lot of notes for improvements on the next version 😄
Sven, very tough build…. But you stuck it all out on the line and you showed us the true meaning of never giving up as a blade smith. You didn’t give up and you put a blade on the table. And for that, you get to move on to the next round of competition.
It will KEAL!
😂🙌
Oh dang that would be some spaceship level engineering but a very cool idea nonetheless 🙌
Check out this video on youtube. search for: 'Zero Tolerance Machining' with the Wire EDM
Was this what you had in mind for cutting the segments?
It’s amazing what you did with such a difficult concept. Love it!
Thanks a lot! I‘ve got a whole page of notes for improvements for Mk. II
Maybe that one will even be battle ready 👌🏻
Small scale version of the sword from Pacific Rim. Very cool to see it made, thank you.
Thank you for watching!
That was dope AF. Very entertaining. Thanks for the humor and smart editing. I love that you show your mistakes. Makes me think about how I would solve the problem. Great job!
It's so impressive that you found a way to make it actually work, the chopping at the end was so satisfying
Glad you liked it 🙌
The engineering and thought process behind this sword is nothing short of incredible. Amazing work!! Can’t wait to see what comes next! 🔥
I'm not sure how often you revisit comments and the like, but for future help in the case of drilling through rod or tubing, a spot drill before drilling through will prevent it from walking! Love this so much!
Thanks a lot! I do try to answer every comment. If you take the time to write one, I‘ll take the time to answer.
I did ended doing it like you said. With the first allthread I wanted to keep the round aesthetic, that’s why I didn’t file it down.
Thanks for the tip, though 🙌
I love the can-do attitude backed up with accomplishing your goal, using a variety of techniques and putting out a top notch video about all of it.
As a machinist I would always spot face with an endmill on an uneven surface before drilling. Not sure how feasible that is for your setup just fyi about one industry solution.
@@gabrielstarlight9003 i would have loved to have a mill for this project. Milling the slot for the segment of the second version I have planned would be so great to remove any wiggle room between metal dividers and segment (like I have with this version)
A little rough, but you have given the craftsman of the future a design that's wholefully doable and achievable for more epic builds. Thank you for your effort and all the time you put into this.
Amazing job! I like that in the examples you had more whip than sword, but the end result ended up somewhat looking like Zabimaru from Bleach. :D Well done!
Thanks!! Yeah, it does look very similar
I laughed, I cried, I learned. Glad I watched. Don't stop making these. A good video through and through
Thanks a lot! I really appreciate that 🙌
This might be the most enjoyable build I've watched of this challenge so far. I liked that you set a goal for yourself and did a lot of engineering problem solving to get to a solution. I really want more video of the finished product though.
Thanks a lot!! I try to make my videos a bit different than most of the others so it’s really nice to hear that you liked it!
I only had one hour to film the final footage so that came a bit short of what I would have liked to show. I’m planning to do a follow up video to go over what worked and what didn’t more in depth and also do some more cutting tests etc.
Thanks for watching!!
Product design, blacksmithing, sword making, building, woodworking... You really can do it all!
Thanks 🙌
Bad Asssssss Sven!!! I think if you had a dedicated shop with all the tools and toys, you would probably have had it together in a day or two with your final schematic in mind. But, you didn't have all that, and you still did everything you did on your own with the tools available. I think you did an incredible job, and it's final form is just awesome! Well done my man 😁👍🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 Almost forgot, the cut scenes are hilarious as well!
Thanks a lot! Having a mill would definitely made this project a hell of a lot easier 😄
Thanks for always watching and commenting, I really appreciate that 🙌🙌
@@NjordArtisan jeez, sorry I missed this comment! I've watched your videos since day one, and it's great to watch your progress grow with every video. Looking forward to the next one!
Okay well I have not watched this video yet, but if you pull this off hands down you win. There is no competition at that point that is the most fantasy blade I have ever seen and it is absolutely delicious
Its the fact that you made mistakes that kept me watching. I had to take a break working on my house because I was growing frustrated with my own mistakes. Watching your video made me realize that I was letting a few set backs ruin my day and I was just going to quit but now, I feel like I can finish. Thank you for your video! You are a beast and a inspiration to people like me and I cant thank you enough for working through your set backs. I am now a new subscriber and encourage you to make more videos, you clearly have skills and will only get better as time goes on. I look forwards to seeing you skill sets grow and I cant wait to see what you make next. Sincerely, a new fan from Erie PA USA
Wow, thanks a lot! I’m very happy you liked the video and that I could even somehow help you with you own struggle 🙏
I feel like nowadays with social media way too many people act like life is always picture perfect and it’s only the outcome that counts, when in reality theres obstacles everywhere all the time and how we overcome them is the important thing. Man, that got deep 😄
Thanks again for watching, have a nice day and good luck working on your house 🙌
Looks like you solved many of the issues with a sword whip, the rigidity looks like it could be better, but still very amazing.
Thanks! I’m doing some improvements right now to fix the sword mode to be a bit better for a follow up video ✌🏻
Anyone else saw this and remember of Renji Abarai's Zabimaru or is it just me? Looks exactly like Zabimaru. Awesome work!
I was going to say the same.
That's exactly what I thought of.
This build is both beautiful and terrifying! Love it! You did a great job, keep going!
Thanks!! 🙌
Chain Whips have been living in my head since I was a wee baby playing soul caliber. Glad to see someone tackle it properly.
Mate it’s a crime that u don’t have at least a million subscribers ❤
Thanks 😄🙌

You should watch "Brotherhood of the Wolf" the bad guy has a retractable whipsword that's made from bone.
Thanks for the link. Voted 👍
,
Why not make a Snake Sword Staff, when you want to use it as a snake blade, you pull the interior rod down, so it is no longer ridged and can spread evenly, this also gives you more grip.
An engineering masterpiece with magnificient aesthetics? You are absolutely incredible my guy! Great work!
Wow. That is the most practical whipblade I have ever seen. Congratulations on a brilliantly crafted blade. You have my vote. Subscribed
Thanks a lot! I really appreciate the support 🙌🙌
What a pleasure it was to watch this. It is obvious that you put a lot of work into it! From the segment that showed you blurred working over the top of your self to the pieces falling from above later in the video, awesome!!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I love how on the second toss, your like "oh lemme guess, this time it doesn't duplicate and he has 1?" Then it just disappears, went straight to Narnia
😄
That is one of the most complex coolest swords I’ve ever seen!🔥🔥🔥
Thanks a lot, Drew!! I‘m glad you like it 🔥
The amount of creativity and dedication this took...just wow.
fixed every problem present with a whip sword. good sir, i salute you.
The best kind of inspiration is from people who say something is impossible. Thank you for disproving them
I cant send to you the amount of respect, and acknowledgment you truly deserve. I'm truly amazed. You done something that experts said that cant be done. And you done it . And video explained every step. So much respect my friend.
Thanks a lot!! I really appreciate the support 🙌🙌
This is literally the best creation i have ever seen in real life, I dont even think i saw anybody build a Whip lash like sword i can literally only see this on a video game

it actually looks pretty light to be honest
@@NjordArtisan Good luck with that. ;-/ :-)
Wow, it actually chops in the whip mode, extended the range.
Dude this was amazing! You explained every single step so well and the production quality was awesome. Top shelf work man!
Thanks a lot! I really put a lot of work in the video as well, so it’s nice that it seems to have paid off 🙌
Мастерство поражает, амбиции невероятны, крутость исполнения вдохновляет, а качество - восхищает. Этот меч в руках достойного рыцаря.
Thanks a lot 🙌
Confusing. I thought everyone in the west was a demon possessed satanist who had to be killed by freezing. How can it be so great and funny that we are to be frozen (even though this strategy wont work) by noble righteous Russians and yet this guy is a "true knight". Confusing. Can you guys get your story straight, please?
Worthy knight, sorry.
The diesel generators in zaporizhia or however its spelt have enough fuel to cool the plant for two weeks. That was days ago. We are just over a week away from all of europe being destroyed forever. You are speaking to a youtuber who may well be dead in 2 weeks. And yet you have time to watch his video about a fantasy sword and leave dumb comments about it? Has there ever been a more shameful culture in history? Get a grip. Even if this all gets resolved, just for the threat, no one should ever have anything to do with a russian ever again. No country should ever trade with you. No country should ever grant you visas. Do you think this is something you will be able to just live down? Do you think that there will ever be anything you can do to redeem yourself ever? Just for the threat, you understand? It's already happened. You already crossed the line. Dont give me "its my government, not me" slave. You're so scared of your government, such a slave that you're willing for all this to continue? And you want to speak of worthy knights? As russian soldiers rape and torture innocent people in ukraine? Lord give me strength.

Congratulations. I've been looking to see someone make a good whip sword. You're the first person I've seen that has made the strongest effort to hit the targets of all categories of its functionality an approach the Logistics going in a good direction. This was so cool to watch!! I’ve never seen any forging video from beginning to end, but the premise of this seemed really unique and then your editing and dry comedic style kept me hooked! Thanks a lot!

my favorite part is how he is including his mistakes as examples, this is actually really good
I'd love to see you make a Scissorblade, Kill La Kill style, but with something that everyone who has done it before neglects(besides that one guy who did it with cardboard), the Decapitation mode. An extendable extra blade that's linked to a segment of the handle which lets you switch between a large and small sword.
