  • Welcome to the 'southern leg' of my little point-to-point 50 mile series, and what was probably the most different kind of riding from the other episodes. A little bit of extra waffle about old cycling routes and why I have a bit of a soft spot for a certain kind of terrain.

Another great video fella. Urban cycling is the default setting for me. We are blessed with an ever improving cycling infrastructure, particularly into central London but now have to contend with pedestrians walking out into cycleways without looking and an ever increasing number of folk on illegal electric bikes and scooters. Sometimes I find it easier just playing with the traffic on the roads. But mustn't grumble. Keep up the good work 👍🏼

Thanks, Sheetal. Interesting note about the roads sometimes being less hazardous than navigating the cycle infrastructure. I've definitely found that too on numerous occasions! Happy cycling and enjoy the warmer weather if you're out this weekend! 🙂

Altrincham - my home town. You certainly can hurtle around the lanes of Cheshire. A point I also really only appreciated after living in the hilly areas of Sydney.

From Alty, small world! I taught at South Trafford College back in the noughties! Different cycling round that way for sure.

@@onemorecyclist yes, know South Trafford College well. Small world indeed. Had some friends who went there. We’d meet in the now defunct Pelican pub. I lived in the southern part of Timperley, curiously known as higher Timperley because it was on a hill - a glacial drumlin more like. As a kid I’d sneak out and ride on my bike to the airport to watch the planes come in and take off. Now as a middle aged man I winge about the fully laden A380’s struggling to gain altitude flying over my Sydney Inner West home on their way to Asia and Europe.🤣

The Pennine descents are hairy but I'd sooner have a go at those than mix it with traffic at speed in the center of Manchester - what a contrast - you must have been familiar with the roads - well done. Great idea and nice series - like how you comment on the ride not average speeds and pbs. Thanks for the videos.

Thanks as always for following along, Brian. Yes, really contrasting terrain on these rides, which I've thoroughly enjoyed as part of the overall point-to-point 'challenge' - and this ride probably the most extreme example! I do know those roads in and out of Manchester really well and that definitely helped knowing it was possible to cut right through the city on this one. Happy cycling!

The Manchester I grew up really was exactly what you describe. A ‘shithole’ resplendent in its urban decay and a music scene to compliment it. It’s changed dramatically over the years and last year I barely recognised it to be honest. A little piece of me felt sad for the loss of my Manchester.

Wow, that ride around Manchester was terrifying. People walking out in front of you, tram tracks, random kerbs. Don't think I'd last more than a week there

It's a bit of a gauntlet compared with those quiet country lanes, that's for sure. Thanks for the comment and happy cycling over there!

Thanks for watching! Yes, I'm not there very often myself these days and always struck by how much it's changed - although Piccadilly Gardens feels just as sketchy as ever! 🙂Happy cycling!

I wondered what the route of 'South' would be like. Nice planning - Tatton Park looked interesting.
You're right about city-cycling needing a different mindset.
I had two years of 'commando cycling' in Paris, although kids on mopeds were probably more dangerous than the bike-aware car drivers.
At least you had good weather and good light for the crossing of Cottonopolis.

Thanks, Gordon. I was initially trying to get Jodrell Bank and a few of the Cheshire lanes further east into the route (which is lovely cycling territory) - and would usually head out towards Macc and round Stockport way from that direction - but it was bumping the mileage up too much (to be true to the series etc.) but Tatton Park and through to Ashley is a really nice section. Definitely the quickest ride of the series (relatively speaking that it, I'm not a particularly fast cyclist these days!) 🙂

I had a few months in 1987 where I cycled into Manchester from Timperley every day for work on a Harry Hall tourer. I was about more fearless in those days but it was quicker than getting the bus and cheaper than the train. No trams to content with then.

Having spent many years on Dutch networks I found the last half of that ride very stressful. As you say, it's problem solving at a high intensity.

Thanks for the comment and yes, I know what you mean. I'm pretty well conditioned to that kind of riding through many years' prior experience but we've got such a long way to go in the UK to make most cities even vaguely appealing for majority cycling. Not sure we'll ever get there but I hope so, given all the benefits of more people cycling etc.

Been looking forward to this one, as most of my cycling is on the cheshire plain, Not a fan of Manchester as I find the cycle paths quite dangerous, Although it is amazing to see the place develop

Thanks, Dave. I don't 'storyboard' my ride videos and not sure I fully got across in this video what lovely cycling the Cheshire lanes offer! Maybe another Cheshire ride at some point to sort that! 🙂. This route though made me quite nostalgic for those big loops I used to do out to Macc or Alderley Edge, Jodrell Bank, Goostrey etc. Know what you mean about cycle paths it's definitely the exception when you find one that isn't just a badly maintained token gesture. Happy cycling!

Stressful through Manchester! Not sure if you were wearing anything but did your heart rate elevate going through there ?

    • @onemorecyclist

Thanks for the comment, Brian. No HR data to check but it would have been interesting to see if any difference. I've never really minded the city cycling and mixing it up with traffic. I do get a bit stressed with those occasions when I know there's a car/cars crawling slowly behind me waiting to pass - although that can happen on the country lanes as much as in the city. TH-cam is full of videos of close passes and aggressive exchanges between cyclists and drivers - and not saying I've never had experience of this - but I always thought from over a decade commuting around the city that cyclists and drivers rubbed along reasonably amicably around Manchester.

Good video so pedestrians are just so ignorant when out cycling especially the women at the start she looked and seen you but still just walked across your path 😡
